Country music superstar and actor Randy Travis has been hospitalized and was in critical condition, according to media reports. TMZ.com reports that Travis was hospitalized after acquiring viral cardiomyopathy.

USA Today reports that Travis had heart surgery, according to a family member.

In a statement, Travis’ sister-in-law Teresa Traywick said: "We have been told he has had surgery. Our prayers are going out to him because my husband just had a heart attack last year, so it is in their family. Their mother passed away at an early age with her heart, so it is like these boys are following right in their footsteps. My prayers are with them. That’s all I can say right now."

Citing the Mayo Clinic, the TMZ story notes that cardiomyopathy is a "disease that weakens and enlarges your heart muscle." It’s not clear what caused the condition in the 54-year-old singer, the story adds. He had been scheduled to perform Wednesday in Deadwood, S.D.

Travis has appeared in TV and films, including the TV series "Touched by an Angel" and the 2001 feature "Texas Rangers." He has had 16 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart since breaking through in the mid-1980s, and is widely considered to be a key player in the evolution of country music, particularly in spurring the neotraditional movement.

He has had a series of hassles in the past year, including a high-profile run-in with the law last August in which he was reportedly found naked at the scene of a traffic accident and was accused of threatening to kill police officers during his arrest, as we reported previously.
