A television version of the 1995 movie "12 Monkeys" is close to a series order, with original movie producers Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle on board with the project at Syfy, The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports.

The movie starred Bruce Willis as a criminal in a post-apocalyptic world, where humanity has moved underground after the outbreak of a deadly virus. Willis’ character travels back in time to try to learn more about the virus. The film also starred Brad Pitt and Madeleine Stowe.

Roven and Suckle submitted the pitch, which may become a 90-minute backdoor pilot that could end up receiving a straight-to-series order, similar to Syfy’s "Battlestar Galactica."

Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, both of "Nikita" and "Terra Nova," will write the script, while "24’s" Jon Cassar will direct the project from Universal Cable Productions.

"We have a great pilot. We’re now flushing out what the rest of the series might be," Syfy President of Original Programming Mark Stern told the publication.

Syfy is considering five to six new original scripted projects for 2014, and is considering short orders of eight to 10 episodes, Stern said.

"Some may be [split runs of] 10 and 10. Our goal is to do five or six original scripted series a year and a big tentpole event miniseries that could also possibly serve as a backdoor pilot to a series as well, the way that ‘Battlestar Galactica’ did. It’s an exciting time for us," he said.
