An actor with a string of TV credits spanning six decades, best known for his long-running role on the CBS drama "The Waltons," has died. Joe Conley, who portrayed the general store owner Ike Godsey on "The Waltons," died July 7, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 85.

No details of his death were immediately available, the story says.

The actor portrayed Godsey on 172 of the show’s 212 episodes, which aired on CBS from 1971 through 1981, and in all six of the reunion telefilms, the story notes. (The general store owner was played by another actor, Woodrow Parfrey, in the series’ two-hour pilot.) On the series, Conley played opposite Ronnie Claire Edwards, who appeared as his bossy wife, Corabeth Walton Godsey.

Conley’s character owned the General Merchandise, rode a 1927 motorcycle and got married to Corabeth Walton in the third season, the piece adds.

Conley started out as a child radio star and then appeared on dozens of TV shows, including "Mister Ed," "Lassie," "Dragnet" and "Gunsmoke." He also appeared in films such as 2000’s "Cast Away" and in TV commercials.
