Why So Many Snubs in This Year’s Emmy Nominations?

Jul 19, 2013  •  Post A Comment

The Emmy nominations tend to generate at least as much interest in who got snubbed as they do in who received nominations, and "This year is a particularly brutal one, owing to the introduction, in an already too crowded TV world, of programming not specifically produced for, you know, television," writes Lisa de Moraes at Deadline.com.

A number of traditional Emmy contenders, from cable as well as broadcast, appeared to get shoved aside this year to make room for a new medium, as online streamer Netflix arrived at the Emmys party in a big way with 14 nominations.

One of the big snubs, de Moraes writes, is Tatiana Maslany of BBC America’s "Orphan Black," on which she plays a con artist and six clones. Her name "started trended this morning when the academy didn’t recognize any one of her seven performances," de Moraes wrote Thursday.

Matt Weiner of "Mad Men" was "completely shut out in the drama writing derby — a first for the AMC period drama. Yes, the academy has actually made us feel bad for Weiner — something we didn’t think possible," she notes.

One blow for broadcast TV was the absence of a nomination for Julianna Margulies of CBS’s "The Good Wife," after the actress received nods in each of the past three years.

De Moraes includes more than a dozen other snubs, such as the IFC series "Portlandia" ("Hello — It won a Peabody") and actor Kevin Bacon of the Fox serial-killer drama "The Following" ("Bacon’s quiet scenery-chewing skills were apparently lost on the academy").

Other snubs included Melissa McCarthy — nominated for a guest-hosting spot on "Saturday Night Live" but not for her regular gig on CBS’s "Mike & Molly" — and HBO’s "Boardwalk Empire," which ended its string of two consecutive nominations for outstanding drama series.

  1. Hit with the uncool label of Another CBS Procedural, I’m sorry ELEMENTARY’S Jonny Lee Miller as Manhattan-based, modern-day Sherlock Holmes was not nominated. His performance regularly eclipses content.

  2. …another glaring snub: Sharknado

  3. This may turn out to be the best thing to happen to Tatiana Maslany. She is getting waaay more publicity by being snubbed than she ever would have received as one more in that group of nominees. Everyone in the industry and the general public are now hearing about her and about the compelling show Orphan Black.
