A filmmaker whose work for the PBS series "American Masters" focused on celebrities including Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, has died, The New York Times reports. Gail Levin was 67.

Levin died of complications from metastatic breast cancer, her brother and only survivor, David Levin, said.

"She often played down biographical details to tell the subject’s stories in an almost impressionistic manner," The Times notes.

In "Marilyn Monroe: Still Life," from 2006, she looked at the actress through photographs of her, while in "Jeff Bridges: The Dude Abides" (2011), she looked at Bridges’ off-screen work as a painter, potter and vintner, the story says.

Her last film, "Cab Calloway: Sketches," focused on Calloway’s dance moves, which continue to have impact, and his broad appeal with audiences, the story says.
