Court TV Changes Name to truTV

Jul 11, 2007  •  Post A Comment

Turner Broadcasting has picked truTV as the new name for Court TV.
Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks, said the name change reflects the network’s programming, which brings exciting, real-life stories to viewers.
The network also said it put four new projects into development in support of the new brand, including shows from Granada Television, producer of “Nanny 911”; Original Productions, co-producer of “Deadliest Catch”; Bunim/Murray Productions, creators of “The Real World”; and Tiger Aspect USA, producer of “Ms. Adventure.”
The new series follow neighbors feuding, the ski patrol and Texas oil wildcatters, all a far cry from the more cerebral legal and forensic fare for which Court TV has been known.
“The success of the Turner Entertainment Networks can be attributed in a big way to the fact that we have built strong brands that resonate with viewers,” said Koonin. “With this new name, truTV joins its sister networks TNT, TBS and TCM in establishing itself a solid, identifiable brand, paving the way for continued growth.”
The new name is scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1.

  1. yuck.

  2. The next time DISH cuts this channel over $$$, I will not be crusading for its return. CourtTV was a revolutionary idea, and as much a public service as CSPAN. (Too bad it never did get into the Supreme Court). It just amazes me that the network exec’s don’t get it. Star Jones? The creators of “The Real World”? “Psychic Detectives”? Neighbors feuding? Texas oil wildcatters? Getting rid of Catherine Crier? I keep waiting for an announcement that the execs are being committed to insane asylums, or at least long-term drug rehabs. (Maybe THAT I’d watch!) But truTV will just be a program slot I skip over as fast as possible.

  3. Here’s a programming idea: OJ Simpson Trial reruns! Think of the weeks and weeks of airtime they could fill in on the cheap!

  4. What a bunch of hooey. Reality TV and the YouTube phenomenon is great for vacuous 16 year-olds, but the rest of us want the kind of programming Court TV was started for.
Oh well, chalk one up for the advertisers.

  5. the star jones tv talk show I would not waste my time!!!

  6. Why do we need more junk? CourtTV at least kept your brain turning – its real, sad and educating.
In my opinion theres not much worth watching on TV anymore other than JUNK.

  7. In my opinion bad move. I like CTV as it is(except for Star Jones, never liked her). I imagine I will be watching it a lot5 less…maybe none at all.
