Fareed Zakaria to Host CNN International News Program

Nov 7, 2007  •  Post A Comment

CNN has hired Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria to host an hourlong weekly program on which journalists and commentators from throughout the world discuss international affairs.
CNN/U.S. President Jon Klein announced the deal Wednesday. The launch date is set for first quarter 2008. It is expected to be a weekend show telecast on CNN/U.S. and CNN International.
“Fareed is the best in the world at boiling down—without dumbing down—complex issues,” Mr. Klein said in the announcement. “His weekly global get-together on CNN will be invaluable to viewers who are beginning to realize that, for their own personal and financial security, they urgently need to know what’s really going on in their world.”
“CNN’s global reach is such a powerful tool for understanding a world that is growing ever more interconnected,” Mr. Zakaria said. “For one hour a week we’ll shrink the planet down to a digestible size and get to know the most important people and ideas from everywhere that are affecting our viewers’ lives.”
Mr. Zakaria, who is based in New York, will continue to oversee Newsweek’s international editions and write his foreign affairs column for the magazine, while also contributing analysis to other CNN programs seen worldwide.
Mr. Zakaria has a book due out next year and his 2003 bestseller, “The Future of Freedom,” is being translated into 20 languages. He has been a recurring member of the round-table on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos” and host of “Foreign Exchange With Fareed Zakaria” on PBS.

  1. I am so looking forward to this programme and am pleased I found out about it before it starts. But first quarter is almost over!

  2. It is now mid-April, i’m sitting on pins and needles…i have not seen nor heard of Mr Zakaria’s show!!!!did i miss it????

  3. Great news if it lives upto its title,’INTERNATIONAL NEWS PROGRAM’. Having born and raised in India reading the local news papers as well as TIME, NEWSWEEK etc etc then spending about 15 years in in UK listening to BBC I was totally disappointed by the 4 main news channels in USA for over ten years. My world shrunk to USA,Israel, Afganistan and Iraq with few other countries popping up every now and then when there is an earth quake or a cyclone. When I was in Augusta there was an ad on the bill board for the local paper”AUGUSTA CHRONICLE YOUR WORLD”. That was literally true. Being a physician and having had the opportunity to move around the so called educated people most of their world did not extend beyond Augusta. I hope this and programs like this will widen the horrizon of my children and my grand children beyond the beyond the costlines of Pacific and Atlantic ocean.
Mr Zakaria I hope you will live upto the expectation. My only regret is your timing. I wish there was some kind of world news every day. I often wonder why CNN waste their money and time for people like Lou Dobbs. a constant barrage about Immigration. i understand it is a problem. But can’t he move on.

  4. I have watched one program of the new CNN world news program with Fareed ZAkaria and was delighted to, once again, after his leaving public television (unannounced?) be exposed to concise, knowledgeable conversation about affairs of the world directing effecting all of us. Thanks for this opportunity…one more thing…what is the name of the program in question?…”Global Perspectives——“, maybe? Are there re-runs of the program at a different time…evening, perhaps? Sincerely, Barbara Bray

  5. The CNN world news program with Fareed Zakaria GPS is fairly interesting and stimulating, but far too hidden and not run frequently enough. I would like to see more of Zakaria.

  6. I wached GSP Zajeraua show is beginning. It is the most important show we all American has to see how other is going on middle east. Each show has had the intellgent guests, the program best thing happened to me.

  7. Your interview with Obama was excellent. I just finished listening to his first book ‘Dreams of my father’ and everything he said seemed to make sense based on his life experience.
Your question of the week regarding man-made wonders–I would say the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel spanning the Del-Mar-Va peninsula to the mainland at Va. 26 miles, part underwater tunnel, part bridge, all wonder.
You and your GPS program are a breath of fresh air.

  8. CNN replays everything. This should be replayed a few times in the week. It is an excellent show. Let people find in by replaying it. Also I watch CNN alot. I don’t see it advertised. Why is Mr. Zakaria not seen on more CNN shows? Please.
    Go CNN…smile

  9. I watched you on Sunday evening about 6:00 PM and you were discussing Barghouti and the Palestinian problem; you mentioned a book, the title of which escapes me, dealing with the subject of Israel, and I would like to purchase it.

  10. Dear Fareed,
I thank you for helping us care enough about America to keep us intergally informed with clear and unbiased information about how we can participate and share the oneness with the other countries of this world. It is so clear to me how you have paid so much attention, in general, in your life that you have become such a clear guide to all of us. I try to never miss your program because no matter how much other news I listen to filtering out the personal agendas is so consuming. The way Presidents and leaders open to you about major crises in their countries and their relationships to all of us has so encouraged me. Also seeing President Obama reading your book has thrilled me to no end because he needs you there with your internationally clear, (I have really paid attention forever) perspective. Fareed, I want to thank you for your dedicated service to all of us here on earth. I really prayed for your mother when the Mumbai tragedy occurred, and I knew her office was in that beautiful hotel. I will always keep praying for you and your family. I love seeing Anderson Cooper and all the others waking up to what you bring to the table. Thank you again for your service.

  11. Great post!

  12. I watch Fareed whenever I have the chance, be it Oman, Qatar, Thailand or Mexico. I appreciate his objectiveness and unopinionated style. I put him up there with Aljazerra. Simply reporting without spins and attitudes.

  37. I do enjoy the manner in which you have presented this specific matter plus it really does present us some fodder for thought. However, because of everything that I have seen, I simply wish as the actual commentary pile on that folks remain on issue and don’t start upon a tirade associated with some other news du jour. Still, thank you for this fantastic piece and though I can not really go along with it in totality, I respect your viewpoint.
