Late Night Eyes Return
Secret dealings between the camps of different network late-night shows are hinting at a return to the airwaves, Daily Variety reports. While late-night hosts are supportive of their writers, there’s also concern for their staffers who are affiliated with the Writers Guild of America, the paper reports. Any forward momentum on the deal probably wouldn’t happen until after Thanksgiving. The largest stumbling block is that no show wants to be the first to return; backchannel talks are planning for shows to return simultaneously, the newspaper says.
Actors Receiving Notice of Job Status
As the WGA strike halts television production, studios are informing acting talent about the status of their jobs during the stoppage, Daily Variety reports. Studios are sending out notices some time this week about job status, whether actors will receive compensation for a minimum number of episodes, be placed on half-paid suspension or be terminated outright, the newspaper says.
Tensions Still Heated Between Writers, Producers
Like battling ships in the sea, the WGA and Association of Motion Picture & Television Producers continue to blast one another and are no closer to returning to the bargaining table than when the strike started last week, Daily Variety reports. Full-page newspaper ads only act to incense the opposite camp, and hard words continue to fly between WGA and AMPTP leadership, the newspaper reports.
Presidential Candidate Edwards to Walk Picket Line
John Edwards, Democratic presidential hopeful, will join picketing writers Friday at the NBC studio in Burbank, Deadline Hollywood Daily says. Mr. Edwards is taking his support of writers a step further than his Democratic presidential brethren, who have issued statements of support for the striking writers, the blog says.
‘SNL,’ ’30 Rock’ Going Live in Theater
Cast members of “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” will be performing at the Upright Citizens Brigade theater in New York, with proceeds going to the WGA strike fund, Broadcasting & Cable reports. The “SNL” cast on Nov. 17 will perform a collection of past sketches with musical guest Yo La Tengo. The show will be hosted by Michael Cera. The “30 Rock” crew will act out a show script on Nov. 19, the newspaper says.
‘Riches’ Run Into Strikers
Striking writers of FX’s “The Riches” crashed production of their show Thursday by shouting during filming of a downtown L.A. scene, the Los Angeles Times says. The writers were aided by members of the Service Employees International Union local, whose building is across from the shoot, the Times says. A truce was made during which producers and writers allowed the shoot to continue 15 minutes after the shouting stopped, the newspaper says.
