Golden Globes: ‘Mad Men,’ ‘Extras’ Win Best Series

AMC’s acclaimed freshman series “Mad Men” picked up the Golden Globe for best drama series and HBO’s “Extras” won for best comedy.
“Mad Men,” created by former “Sopranos” writer/producer Matthew Weiner, also won a best actor award for Jon Hamm’s performance as an advertising executive.
“Extras” bested NBC’s “30 Rock” and ABC’s “Pushing Daisies,” among other shows, to win best comedy for its second and final season.
HBO’s movie “Longford” topped the list of winners with three awards and “Mad Men” was runner up with two. HBO won six Globes altogether, more than any other network.
The 65th annual Golden Globes, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, were announced at a press conference Sunday evening rather than a traditional awards show after the Hollywood writers strike forced a change in plans. NBC canceled the regular ceremony after facing a boycott by stars who pledged to not cross a writers strike picket line.
NBC aired an unusual one-hour Globes broadcast where “Access Hollywood” hosts Billy Bush and Nancy O’Dell, along with other evening newsmagazine personalities, quickly ran through the winners list.
Cable network programming dominated the list of Globes television winners, with only Tina Fey winning best comedy actress for NBC’s “30 Rock” earning an award for a broadcast network.
Ms. Fey bested last year’s winner America Ferrera (ABC’s “Ugly Betty”). Actor David Duchovny won best actor in a comedy for Showtime’s “Californication.”
Glenn Close won for best actress in a television drama for the FX series “Damages,” beating out six other nominees including Minnie Driver, Edie Falco and Holly Hunter.
Jeremy Piven won his first Globe for best supporting actor in a comedy for HBO’s “Entourage.” Mr. Piven was previously nominated for a Globe in 2005.
“Longford” won for best miniseries, and for best actor (Jim Broadbent) and supporting actress (Samantha Morton) in a miniseries. Queen Latifah picked up an award for supporting actress in a miniseries for HBO’s “Life Support.”
