SAG Award Winners Use Speeches to Support WGA
Josh Brolin and Julie Christie were among Screen Actors Guild Award winners who used their acceptance speeches Sunday night to show support for the striking Writers Guild of America, Daily Variety reported. Brolin, speaking for the winning ensemble cast of “No Country for Old Men,” said the studio system was “backfiring,” while Christie, named best actress for “Away From Her,” noted the importance of union representation, the newspaper reported.
CBS’ Moonves, Writers Guild Leaders Break Bread
CBS President-CEO Leslie Moonves had dinner with Writers Guild of America leaders Patric Verrone and David Young in a private dining room at the Four Seasons Hotel last Friday, Daily Variety reported. Harry Isaacs, CBS’ head of labor relations, also was part of the meeting, the newspaper said.
RKO, Writers Guild Sign Interim Agreement
RKO Productions and the Writers Guild of America signed an interim agreement last Friday that will allow RKO to announce its production schedule this week, the Hollywood Reporter said. The deal is similar to those the WGA signed with companies such as Lionsgate, which preceded RKO’s agreement by a day, as well as the Weinstein Co. and United Artists, the newspaper reported.
Literary Agents See Surge in Book Proposals
Talent agents are getting numerous book proposals as the Writers Guild of America strike has given writers more time to finish once-sidelined projects, the Los Angeles Times reported. William Morris and Paradigm are among agencies receiving a higher volume of proposals from screenwriters who have more time on their hands, the newspaper said. Mark Haskell Smith (“Playing God”), Wesley Strick (“Arachnophobia”) and Jim Jennewein and Tom S. Parker (“The Flintstones”) are among screenwriters either pitching or finishing novels, the Times said.

  1. About time for this to be over… We all know that without writers the entire industry will fall. Just look at the programming that’s trying to make it sans writing staff. All are failing. How about you greedy studios give the WGA what they NEED. (What they’re asking for) Following that, we can all go back to work and the public can enjoy what they’re used to.
