WGA Strike Roundup: Wednesday, Jan. 23

Oscar Optimism on the Rise
The Oscars may be free of picketing writers, as olive branches between the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers and the Writers Guild of America have been extended in the past 24 hours, Daily Variety reports.
The WGA has taken off the table the issue of jurisdiction over animation and reality TV writers, a major stumbling block during negotiations. That has increased hope that the strike could be over before the Feb. 24 Oscar telecast, the newspaper says.
An even bigger sign of goodwill was the announcement that the guild will not picket the Grammys, a unofficial notice that informal talks over the weekend with CBS head Leslie Moonves were productive, the newspaper reports.
Striking Writers Take to the Stage
Sixteen striking writers have penned short plays, tentatively titled “TV Takes the Stage,” with proceeds benefiting the Motion Picture & Television Fund, Daily Variety reports.
Five performances of the event have been planned to take place in Los Angeles, with TV series actors, including “Cashmere Mafia’s” Bonnie Somerville and “ER’s” Troy Evans, taking the stage, the newspaper says.
Tickets are between $20 and $30, and talks are in progress to bring the shows to New York City, the newspaper reports.
Fox, CW Knocks Projects Off Development Slate
Like CBS, Fox and The CW have cut development projects from its upcoming slate, with Fox dropping two dozen scripts and The CW nixing about a dozen, the Hollywood Reporter says.
CBS let go about 20 scripts in development on Friday, the newspaper says.
The Fox scripts were split evenly between comedies and dramas. A Wayans brothers comedy and a Josh Berman drama fell under the ax, the newspaper says.
