NBC Station Group Cancels ‘In the Loop’

Feb 18, 2008  •  Post A Comment

“In the Loop With iVillage” will leave the weekday lineup of NBC owned-and-operated stations at the end of March.
The staff of the Chicago-based daytime show was told Friday, on the eve of the long Presidents Day holiday weekend, that “In the Loop” will continue in production through March 28.
Staffers, who are expecting to be laid off, had been told the cancellation is a cost-saving move by the stations group, recently renamed the NBC Local Media Division, but another source said it was low ratings that did in the show.
The show originated from Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., when it debuted as “iVillage Live” in December 2006 as an attempt to bundle live TV, studio and Internet experiences.
In addition to featuring NBC Universal-owned iVillage, the Web site focused on women, the show also frequently featured products of advertisers including Kraft, Philly, Overstock.com, Pop Sugar, Dr. Foster & Smith, Ace Hardware Store and Crate & Barrel.
In an attempt to boost the show’s anemic ratings, NBC News’ in-house production arm, Peacock Productions, took over the hour. Peacock moved the show to Chicago in search of more celebrity guests; hired executive producer Marlaine Selip (“Donahue”); and recast it with three co-hosts: “The Apprentice” alumni Bill Rancic and Ereka Vetrini and actress-comedian Kim Coles.
It originated from NBC-owned WMAQ-TV.
An NBC representative confirmed to TelevisionWeek that the show will remain in production until the end of March.
There was word on the various program substitutions the NBC stations might make after “In the Loop” leaves the air, but station group executives are said to continue to believe in the concept behind the show, which launched after NBC Universal bought the iVillage Web site for $600 million in 2006.
The cancellation of the show followed close on the heels of the layoffs of about 13 iVillage employees, including editor-in-chief Jennie Baird.

  1. What a shame. This was a good show. It needed more time and more promotion.

  2. You see, to me it was just the fifth hour of Today.
And there are already four hours of Today.
I think people got sick of the same ol’ same ol’.
Hey, maybe Bill can move to LA and be with Giuliana now.
Just trying to find the bright spot.

  3. That would free NBC owned stations to have local news at 12 p.m. (Eastern & Pacific) or 11 a.m. (Central), only if the stations do not show local news at the hour (New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas-Fort Worth, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, and San Diego). Stations in Los Angeles, San Francisco-San Jose-Oakland, Washington, and Hartford have 11 a.m. Midday newscasts. It is important have local programming at the 11 a.m. or Noon hour for 30 minutes or an hour. thank you.

  4. Interesting tidbit about this show: This program was titled “In the Loop”, but the show wasn’t taped in the Loop itself – in a point Chicago Sun-Times columnist Rob Feder noted, “Loop” was actually taped in Chicago’s Gold Coast, where WMAQ resides (454 N. Columbus Dr.)

  5. What a shame. It’s one of the few shows on NBC that I like. NBC is making another mistake. Give it some time and find a different time slot. Maybe in the afternoon.

  6. What is wrong w/ the new station group czar, Phyllis Schwartz?
This show didn’t even get a fair chance.

  7. Not a surprize…as part of the Orlando crew, iVillage did not have the support of local or national personalities in Orlando…and followed the path of Nickelodeon and Disney programs, they left town for Chicago only to fail.
As a result, Orlando production has crashed to earth like an out of control satellite…and the production and engineering staff are spread across the universe.
Best wishes to all who survive!

  8. Help save In The Loop w/ivillage this is a great show that you guys have please help save our show. It is the first of it’s kind to have interactive online chatter while the show is being aired. I’m one of 10 top chatter, we love our ITL. So many people will lose their jobs, family will have to relocate again. Now what will you put in it’s place, come on give the show a chance. Try moving it to another time, you can also put it on cable. Everyone today go into the live chat room today to see what us chatters are saying.

  9. Don’t feel sorry for us. We’re getting paid well to be fired. We all knew this was coming and most of us have moved on already.

  10. It seems odd to me to try this new interactive format with a new show instead of one with an established following like Oprah (just an example). With a new show, I don’t think viewers care enough about it yet to get that involved – going online and chatting, etc.
Also, in regards to someone else’s post, I don’t think it’s a matter of not giving the show a chance. I watched it when I went late into work last week and it was downright painful to watch. The hosts seperately are very likeable personalities but I don’t think they’re right for this format. The interviews were…awkward…and felt forced and unnatural. As a Chicagoan, I think it’s a great idea to have a show like this just for the city…but this one just didn’t work 🙁

  11. im going to miss seeing ereka on tv. she is so hot.

  12. “In the Loop” is just tooo good to drop.>>>>>
    PLEASE DON’T DROP IT….

  13. I have been watching it on my computer and have enjoyed it. I especially like the man. He could do the show by himself and have guests. I wish it was shown here in Detroit. Someone in Chicago told me about it and I have liked the show. So sorry to have it cancelled.

  14. In The Loop was my favorite daytime television show. They should switch the show to cable television. I think it would be perfect there. The show has a very cable-esque vibe. I say this largely because of its more informative and less entertainment factor for regular network television.
I watch the show after ABC’s “The View” in New York. I’m going to miss that awesome block of daytime.
I’m going to really miss Kim Coles. She is so sweet and is my favorite host! She made the show rather entertaining and spiced it up nicely. I think she is pretty nice for daytime television. I would love to see her on another female geared show.

  15. ” This is Terrible”!!!I am requesting that you reconsider your decision to cancel “In the Loop with i village”. I thoroughly enjoyed it and eagerly looked forward to it each day. I found it refreshing. I work outside of my home so I had to tape it along with “The View” and “Oprah”. I enjoyed all three hosts also. I knew Bill and Ereka from “The Apprentice” and Kim Coles from “Living Single”. You didn’t give them a chance. It seemed to me that they have great chemistry!!! This is a big loss to day time tv.

  16. I will miss this program. It was fun…in between the news 🙂 and Days. I hope another network with more sense picks it up and runs with it. The hosts were good together.

  17. I am so sorry to see this show leave the air. It was one of my favorite I was going to make a trip to Chicago to see a live show. Best wishes to all the staff and prosperity in your future endeavors.

  18. This is a great show, how could they end it? I have never made a plea for a show ever. This just shows how clueless the networks can be.

  19. What a shame . This was another show I really liked. I thought Bill Rancic to be such a beautiful person and Kim to have a great personality.

  20. What a shame to lose such a neat local show. I watch it faithfully every day. The hosts are very good. I enjoy the topics. What is wrong with NBC. Do we need another canned show to replace it.

  21. I’m only surprised that this hideous (even by daytime TV standards) program was aired at all; the Orlando version, with its theme park-caliber talent (whose wince-inducing host chatter and interviews I sometimes took a moment to watch out of pure masochism.) In the re-tooled Chicago installment, the producers apparently felt that filling 2/3 of the hosts’ seats with former “Apprentice” cast members (who should have been consigned to the Reality TV Goodwill bin several years ago) constituted ‘edgy’ casting (Kim Coles fit the sassy-bootylicious-‘urban’-female niche that Star Jones and Sherri Shepard established first, on “The View.”)
Although “Village 2.0” didn’t have the train-wreck quality of its predecessor, that’s the lone attribute for the misguided, awkward experiment in merging the Internet with TV.
All snarkiness aside: the sad part, for me, is that 98% of the comments on this thread beg NBC executives to bring “iVilllage” back. I imagine they’re written by ‘desperate housewives’/mothers of young children. Women shackled to their homes and so starved for meaningful human interaction that whoever beams through the Plasma screen during lonely mornings and endless afternoons–Oprah, Ellen, Rosie, et. all–is a beacon of hope and a surrogate companion. When a digital-human ‘lifeline’ fades from the daily routine, I imagine the sense of loss and abandonment for these women is overwhelming.

  22. I suspect all the “save the show ” comments are from soon-to-be-laid-off employees. This show is off the air because it well and truly sucked. The “talent” was sheer bush league, self aggrandizing in the extreme with nothing to back it up. Obligatory hefty black woman, rich beefcake, and anorexic white woman whose only schtickl was facial mugging at the camera. The production was a grating mix of “bitch talk” with a whole lot of gay male mixed in, coupled with crass BUY-BUY-BUY hucksterism.(Exec producer worked on the rebirth of the fossil DONAHUE?– another flop– I’m not impressed) Guests booked on the show knew their careers were waning if this was the best they could do. Good Riddance.

  23. Hi,
This is a great show! They have so much to offer the viewers.
I really like each and every one of the hosts. If had to choose my favorite, it would be Ereka!
Finally, a really good show comes alon and gets canceled!!!
Terrible! I wish another network would pick it up so the viewers can actually watch a whole show that is very informative, and fun to watch.
    Very disappoined viewer,
    Patti 🙁

  29. That is a very interesting post, Patents are needed for all new technology. If you come up with something be sure to get a patent on it or you may just have your technology copied. The Visto Philosophy mimics The Real Networks Philosophy… “When you can’t sell your products on your own, just sue anyone else that does the job better.”Getting A Patent Thanks

  30. I want to the actual night. But I wish to remain up as well as listen to Mumford & Sons. Selecting the latter.

  31. Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  70. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  71. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  72. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  73. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  74. This is good info! Where else can if ind out more?? Who runs this joint too? Keep up the good work 🙂
