Writers, Producers Reach Tentative Strike Deal

Feb 9, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Hollywood writers and studios have a tentative agreement on the table that could end the strike that has hobbled the broadcast television industry since November.
“We have a tentative deal,” Writers Guild of America presidents Michael Winship (East) and Patric Verrone (West) wrote in memo released to WGA members early this morning.
The WGA has been in informal talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for several weeks since the Directors Guild of America reached a labor deal that formed the template for the writers’ agreement.
Internet residuals have been the major stumbling block of contract negotiations during the three-month long strike.
“[The tentative deal] creates formulas for revenue-based residuals in new media, provides access to deals and financial data to help us evaluate and enforce those formulas, and establishes the principle that, ‘When they get paid, we get paid,’” the WGA leaders said in the memo, which was posted at the WGA Web site and reproduced at the Web site United Hollywood, a WGA strike blog.
The terms of the deal are located here.
Informational meetings about the deal are occurring for WGA members on both coasts today.
Nikke Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that some writers are concerned about the terms of this deal, with one anonymous writer saying that the WGA is “ramming this deal down our throats.”
