ABC took home the most Daytime Emmy Awards this year with 14 total, as “General Hospital” and “One Life to Live” bringing home honors in entertainment categories. CBS won the most entertainment Emmys tonight with five.
ABC pulled in four entertainment awards tonight at the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. The network had received 10 others at a June 13 event recognizing creative arts categories. “General Hospital’s” Anthony Geary nabbed his sixth lead actor trophy tonight, while “One Life” won the writing and directing categories. Between creative arts and entertainment Emmys, CBS collected 13 prizes.
CBS ended up capturing the rest of the soap opera awards at tonight’s entertainment Emmys event, as “The Young and the Restless” took honors with lead actress Jeanne Cooper and supporting actor Kristoff St. John. “As the World Turns’” Jennifer Landon won the younger actress award, and “Guiding Light” took home a support actress win with Gina Tognoni and a younger actor trophy with Tom Pelphrey.
The night also debuted several new categories, as Twentieth Television’s “Cristina’s Court” won the first legal/courtroom award and “The Tyra Banks Show” from Warner Bros. walked away with the talk show-informative award. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognizes 13 categories for the Daytime Entertainment Emmy awards.
Ms. Banks said skeptics had only given her show two weeks to last, and advised the audience on how to deal with detractors.
“I want you to tell them to kiss your dimply, flat, juicy, bootilicious, skinny, jiggly, saggy, fat ass,” she said echoing a memorable speech given during her show.
CBS Television Distribution’s “Rachael Ray” took a surprise win in the talk show-entertainment category, beating out heavy favorite “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” from Warner Bros. Ms. DeGeneres still took away a trophy, winning her fourth talk show host award.
Backstage, Ms. DeGeneres cracked wise about Ms. Ray’s win and her own upcoming marriage to actress Portia de Rossi, saying she was excited about getting married and had set a date for her wedding.
Broadcasting icon Regis Philbin received a lifetime achievement award from ABC late nighter Jimmy Kimmel, who said that Mr. Philbin was “the embodiment of the American dream.” Mr. Kimmel joked that Mr. Philbin was currently working alongside his granddaughter, Kelly, on ABC Domestic Television’s “Live with Regis and Kelly.”
Mr. Philbin thanked his fans from over his 50 years of work on television, saying, “I can’t thank you enough for that kind of loyalty.”
