Following Microsoft’s unsolicited bid to acquire all or part of Yahoo earlier this year, discussion between the two companies have officially ended.
The announcement of the conclusion comes on the heels of multiple meetings regarding various options for a transaction.
A June 8 meeting of Microsoft representatives with Yahoo board members and Chairman Roy Bostock ended with the Microsoft side stating unequivocally that the company is not interested in further pursuing a total acquisition of Yahoo, even at its originally proposed price tag.
For its part, Yahoo has since announced that its board of directors concluded such an acquisition would not be in the best interests of Yahoo stockholders.
A June 12 press release from Yahoo Investor Relations stated the company “remains focused on maximizing value for stockholders by continuing to execute on its strategy of being the starting point for the most consumers on the Internet and a must-buy for advertisers.”
It went on to cite analysts’ projection of growth in online advertising from $40 billion in 2007 to approximately $75 billion in 2010, and its hope to position itself with “the right assets, strategic plan, board of directors and management team to capitalize on this growth opportunity.”
