2007 Hot List: Where Are They Now?

Jul 20, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Josh Barry
As VP of drama development for ABC Entertainment, Josh Barry helped develop scripts for ABC’s critically acclaimed scripted dramas launched last fall, including “Private Practice,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Eli Stone” and “Dirty Sexy Money.” In addition, he’s overseeing the development of “Captain Cook’s Extraordinary Atlas,” “Cupid” and “Prince of Motor City.”
Sean Cohan
For Sean Cohan, senior VP, international, at A&E Television Networks, business is going “very well, thank you.” After growing at a fast pace last year, so far it has ramped up from that level this year, Mr. Cohan says.
Since January 2007, Mr. Cohan’s group has launched 14 services out of the 35 running in the international market, he said. Most of them are from History and History in HD, but there are also new outlets such as the Bio channel and AETN’s Crime & Investigation Channel.
AETN also is pushing its syndicated product into the U.K., Eastern Europe and Asia.
Janus Friis
Internet television service Joost hasn’t quite caught on with consumers yet. That’s because Joost is still a software download. The ascendancy of YouTube and Hulu has demonstrated that Web video viewers want to watch their content on the Web, not through a separate download. But Joost said it plans to introduce a Web-based version of its service later this year.
That may be too late, as consumer habits with Web video are becoming entrenched. Joost, led by co-founder Janus Friis, has grown its content catalog over the past year to more than 7,500 hours and more than 30,000 titles. New partners include PBS, NBA, Barclay’s Premier League, CollegeHumor TV, Next New Networks, National Lampoon and Mojo HD.
Alexis Glick
On her blog “The Glick Report,” Fox Business News VP Alexis Glick sets up clips of stories that were seen on “The Opening Bell” for viewing on her FoxBusiness.com Web page. Her on-air duties have expanded in recent months to include hosting “Opening Bell” from 9-10 a.m. weekdays, in addition to soloing as host of “Money for Breakfast” from 7-9 a.m.
Chris Grant
After holding the titles of managing director and head of worldwide distribution, Reveille, and president, Reveille International, a year ago, Chris Grant is now president of ShineReveille International following the merger of Reveille with Elisabeth Murdoch’s Shine Entertainment in April 2008.
Silvio Horta
The executive producer and showrunner of “Ugly Betty,” Silvio Horta is still running the show, which begins its third season this fall. Mr. Horta’s beloved offspring took a hit from the strike, which interrupted production and made it harder for fans to follow its sometimes winding storylines. He also signed a rich new overall deal with ABC Studios to continue on “Betty” and develop new shows.
Ron Lamprecht
Hulu isn’t the most visited video site on the Web. But it doesn’t have to be. Hulu, the joint venture between News Corp. and NBC Universal, has been adding new programming in the past several months. That includes Web-only shows and programs from other broadcast and cable networks. Hulu also has been successful selling brand advertisers against its programming.
In the past year Ron Lamprecht, senior vice president, sales business development, NBC Universal Digital Distribution, helped launch Hulu and acquire content for the site. He also closed deals for NBCU with Microsoft Zune and mobile deals with Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile, Nokia and Research in Motion. His daughter was born last summer.
Maria Menounos
“Access Hollywood” and “Today” correspondent Maria Menounos has added more notches to her resume, including a deal with Discovery to host “Hollywood Green With Maria Menounos” for Discovery’s Planet Green.
The series, which launched this year, places Ms. Menounos up close and personal with celebrities anchoring the pro-environment green movement, including covering green fashion trends and star-studded green events, and informing viewers on getting involved in the green movement.
She also hosted NBC prime-time series “Clash of the Choirs” and will appear in upcoming theatrical comedy “Tropic Thunder” with Ben Stiller.
Katherine Pope
The president of Universal Media Studios is now focusing on network development after an internal executive shuffle saw cable development shift to Bonnie Hammer. Ms. Pope scored a major victory when NBC renewed first-year drama “Life” for a second season. She’s currently working on launches for several high-profile new shows, including Peacock comedy “Kath and Kim” and the buzzworthy drama “Kings.”
Andrea Ross
In the year since CAA broadcasting and news agent Andrea Ross made the Hot List, she has added clients ranging from NBC “Last Call” host Carson Daly and “Fox and Friends” executive producer Dave Brown to Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” Ms. Ross was involved in the sale of “Celebrity Rap Superstar” to MTV with her client, “E! News” host Giuliana DePandi Rancic, as executive producer. She also negotiated the deal for her client Erica Hill to become a correspondent for “Anderson Cooper 360.”
