Thursday night’s presidential address on the current economic crisis and rescue plan was watched by 52.7 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media numbers.
President George W. Bush’s speech aired from about 9 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. EST on broadcast networks ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Telemundo and Univision as well as cable news channels CNBC, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC.
The address pulled in a 33.2 household/18.2 persons 2+ rating across the 10 networks combined.
Compared to other coverage of major news events in the last 20 years, viewership for last night’s speech came behind the O.J. Simpson trial verdict in 1995, which was viewed by 53.9 million people on 10 networks, and President George H.W. Bush’s news conference on the Los Angeles riots in 1991, which drew 54.6 million people across five networks.

  1. How come the ratings on 9/11 are not included in this list? Surely they are the biggest rating for a news event, ever. Were ratings even recorded for that day?
Actually, I’d be very curious to know the number of people who were watching something else that day.

  2. I love the way you write and also the theme on your blog. Did you code this yourself or was it done by a professional? I’m very very impressed.
