Masters of Sci-Fi: David Eick & Ronald Moore

“Battlestar Galactica” co-executive producer David Eick thinks sci-fi on TV has been true to the origin of the genre more than in other mediums, serving as an “allegory” for many human truths and emotions.
Mr. Eick and fellow “Battlestar” executive producer Ronald Moore will continue in that tradition with their upcoming prequel “Caprica,” which they are working on with former “24” executive producer Remi Aubuchon.

“The show is about artificial intelligence more than about war and combat,” Mr. Eick said. He described the prequel, set 50 years earlier in the “Battlestar” universe, as a “serialized drama” with a “human story” in which “emotions, innocence and agendas sometimes get corrupted.”
Both Mr. Moore and Mr. Eick have a long history in the genre and continue to be innovators. Mr. Moore was a writer on “Star Trek” series “The Next Generation” and “Deep Space Nine,” in addition to executive producer for the teen extraterrestrial drama “Roswell.”
Mr. Eick most recently was executive producer for the short-lived “Bionic Woman” revival. He also served as a producer on the syndicated “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” and co-developed the spinoff “Xena: Warrior Princess” before his development roles at Sci Fi and USA Network.
Looking ahead, the back-door pilot “Virtuality,” from Moore and fellow “Battlestar” writer Michael Taylor, as well as BermanBraun, has been picked up by Fox. The show follows a dozen astronauts on a 10-year journey; the virtual reality program installed on their ship to entertain them develops a bug.
Sci Fi Channel President Dave Howe said Mr. Moore has “an understanding of where this genre needs to go, how to reinvent it, how to make it more relevant to a younger audience and an audience of today.”
“[Mr. Eick] has an interesting fantasy perspective,” Mr. Howe added. “[He] has a need to tell stories that are real and that are gritty and that really do hold humanity up to some scrutiny.”
