Betty Liu, Host of Bloomberg TV’s “Starting Bell”

Nov 30, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Background: Raised and educated in Pennsylvania, Ms. Liu signed on with the Dow Jones Newswire, for which she went on to serve as Hong Kong-based regional correspondent and the youngest bureau chief ever in Taiwan.

TV News Talent

She came back to this country as Atlanta bureau chief for the Financial Times before CNBC Asia made her anchor and correspondent covering the greater China region for “Squawk Box” and anchoring “Capital Connection.” She joined Bloomberg in 2007. She has authored a financial and lifestyle guide, written a personal finance column and done articles for the Wall Street Journal, the Far Eastern Economic Review and Philadelphia Magazine. The Financial Times nominated her for a Pulitzer Prize in 2000 for her series on immigrant labor in the U.S. South.

Buzz: In one year at Bloomberg, she’s proved to be a ratings draw as the solo anchor of an increasingly popular two-hour morning block, as well as host of specials suddenly drawing larger audiences. Smart, worldly and known to be nice, she’s a veritable master of all journalistic traits who can do it all and look good enough doing it to have to ignore the blogosphere’s tendency to think of her as a pinup first. Bloomberg, which has been known as an operation that doesn’t lock its stars down, will have to do so to keep Ms. Liu, who is drawing admiring glances from other outlets.

  1. I love watching Betty at mid-night in Sydney before the staring bell. Shes hot too!

  2. Can not agree more. Hot and smart. In China Staring bell begins before 24:00.

  3. Betty L is chilly, icy-eyed, full of herself and her forced little sneer is unattractive. However, our financial office gets a lot of laughs from the deliberate camera shots of The Dragon Lady from the back, showing her legs and the slits in her skirts. Give us Kathleen Hayes any day.
Our favorite Asian on Bloomberg is Bernard L on Squawk Box. He’s genuinely knowledgeable, good temperament and funny, too.

  4. All things being equal between Bloomberg and CNBC, its Betty Liu for me. Becky Quick over at CNBC should finally get a new hair style rahter than the same helmut style she wears every day.
    .
Without question Betty Liu is number 1 in the morning. Great personality and those great looks.

  5. Everyday I watch Bloomberg, CNBC, CNN as well as the BBC. I’d vote Betty Liu to be the all-round best of all the anchor women on all of these networks.

  6. For someone whose first language is not English and who does not pick out the American accent well, my favourite is Deidre Bolton for her enunciation although I agree that Betty is still the best all-rounder.

  7. She’s a true lightweight.

  8. I have to admit, I’m finding myself watching Betty Liu rather than listening. She’s hot and smart I agree. Man, I missed the back shots of her legs and slit in her dress? Wow, would love to see that. My vote is for Betty over Melissa Lee on CNBC.

  9. BETTY, LIKE ALL YOUR FEMALE ANCHORS ARE GREAT
A PLEASURE TO WATCH AND LISTEN TO. EACH ARE
TALANTED AND BEAUTIFUL, I THINK BETTY LIU IS MY FAVOURATE.

  10. Greetings from Waterloo, Ontario Canada – home of the Blackberry!
Betty Liu is first class – a refreshing change for the morning show which has taken on a new look.

  11. BETTY LIU IS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS AND SHOWS AN IN DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF BUSINESS, ENABLING HER TO ASK PENETRATING AND RELEVANT QUESTIONS WITHOUT OFFENDING HER GUESTS. MY ONLY SUGGESTION IS THT BLOOMBERG NOT HIDE HER APPEALING FIGURE BEHIND FAX MACHINES AND COMPUTERS.

  12. BETTY LIU IS ABSOLUTEY GORGEOUS, AND ALSO HAS SOUND BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE WHICH ENABLES HER TO ASK PENETRATING QUESTIONS OF HER GUESTS WITHOUT OFFENDING THEM. SHE PUTS CNBC TO SHAME.

  13. I love Betty Liu! She’s first-rate, best-in-class in every way!
Her questions are formulated with what seemingly appears to be out-of-the-box and improvised verse, but 5-min into the show and you’ll know that her probing questions are strategically placed while simultaneously listening for key points to facilitate the show forward.
All her interviews move forward at an engaging pace, while marginally humbling the interviewee by pinpointing the most honest answer possible. However, never does she offend the other side, which equals journalistic professionalism.
And, yes, she IS quite hot as well!

  14. The global crisis has brought nothing but countless bleak business news like, diving stocks, high unemployment, poverty and broken dreams. Betty Liu is a refreshing face in the sea of turmoil. I am saying this not because I am Asian but because I feel that her easy but witty way of delivering the business news is really highly commendable. Oh yes, she’s got the looks too!

  15. any members of the audience suffering from yellow fever?

  16. J Holmes above on Dec19 must work as a coldcaller in a bucket shop (“our financial office” ha!) because his comment is bizarre and idiotic. Ms. Liu is a competent reporter and interviewer. She’s also easy on the eyes. What’s better than that combo? Much better than uninformed “reporters” opining on matters above their paygrade (i.e. Ali Velshi in Oct ’08 squealing for govt handouts). When I want an ignorant opinion on finance, I’ll ask a cabdriver. Ms. Liu is a class act. She and her cohort on Bloomberg are topnotch. CNBC and the rest are wannabees talking about stuff they dimly understand.

  17. While Ms. Liu is well dressed/coiffed and may be perceived as easy on the eyes (although Melissa Lee is attractive as well), I think her style of questionning can be perceived as too casual/rambling sometimes as if she is not as well prepared and focused on the content and follow up…btw, in my research I listen to several interviews a day on a variety of “market expert” topics presented by many different correspondents.

  18. Ms. Liu is great on the eyes and Bloomberg News beats CNBC hands down most of the time for real pertinent information. That being said, I was very disappointed on her piece Warren Buffett: The Inner Circle. The nominal focus of the special report was the question of succession at Berkshire Hathaway. What a tease! Sure, we got a bunch of interviews with several people rumored to be at the top of the list to replace Buffett when the time comes, but it was mainly fluff. By the end, we knew no more than when we started. If you are a die-hard Liu fan, you got to see her in several different outfits and at several different venues, but she never pressed the question that all of us wanted to hear: Who is going to replace WB? She can and has done better.

  19. Benard L?
ha ha that chap is an air-head & geek. he is obviously talking from both ends, usually the other end

  20. I think that Ms Liu is underrated. She has very good looks but does not try to be flashy. i have seen several of her interviews and she has always delivered them very professionally. Above all of that she is a very attractive young lady to look at.

  21. she’s attractive in a casual, not-too-sexy way and her voice is sweet and soothing. theres nobody else i would want to deliver those grim financial news every day. betty’s absolutely perfect.

  22. Betty is a true professional who conducts the best interviews, and yes she is by far the prettiest anchor. She will learn to pin her guests down and get more info out of them as she gains exp. If bloomberg were smart they’d lock her up for a long time. Right now they have the best anchors, newsn etc. Its time to lock up their stars.

  23. Gosh, i didn’t realize the market crashed. i’m in heaven.

  24. Betty Liu is HOT!!!!!

  25. Droool lol

  26. We want Betty back, we miss her!

  27. betty has my vote anytime. i used to watch cnbc but got tired with all of them talking and arguing at the same time.

  28. Where the heck is Betty Lui. Bloomberg is boring right now!!!

  29. Betty Liu is crazy hot and sexy.

  33. Betty Liu is simply the best in TV contention and Bloomberg is far superior to CNBC and Fox is a distant and boring 3rd. Deidra [sp] Bolton {sp] is also very strong for Bloomberg.

  34. You can watch her daily syndicated bloomberg video clips on her unofficial website bettyliu.com

  35. Betty is attractive and has an awesome brain, although I find myself still flipping btw. Bloomberg & CNBC at times. I think 2 other hot ladies w brains/beauty, like our betty, are Liz Claymon from Fox Business & Rebecca Gomaz from Happy Hour. Man, no one can beat the tri-beauty: Betty (hot sophistacted asian american), Liz (hot red hair white), & Rebecca (hot brazilian).

  36. trying to get in touch with your sister Anne. dont know how else to reach out to her. Congradulations on all your success.

  42. I just saw an interview with Stephen Levit. Betty was probably the worst interviewer in that interview. She asked a micro-economist questions about the macro-economy. She ask stupid questions about unemployment insurance. She tried to use big econ words that had no context in her question. She is horrible and should be fired immediately.

  43. mmmmmmmmmm i would love to wear bettys pantyhose

  44. she is so hot and smart

  45. FOR YOUR INFORMATION….the Chinese Buddhists are investing heavily in Fulton and Montgomery Counties here in upstate New York..they are buying the defunct catholic churches, large parcels of land and large amounts of foreclosed homes in Amsterdam. The Schenectady Gazette notes that they have 2.5 billion dollars to invest in the area..WHAT DO YOU THINK?
