Women in Television: Janice Marinelli

Nov 16, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Who: Janice Marinelli, president, Disney-ABC Domestic Television

Women in TV

Why: Overseeing the domestic TV distribution arm of the Walt Disney Co., Ms. Marinelli has a large and profitable library from which to cull material. Her catalog includes “Desperate Housewives” and “Lost,” which were sold this year for the syndication market, and feature films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean,” which are sold for runs on broadcast and cable networks. Disney Family Movies, an upcoming subscription video-on-demand service, will provide subscribers 10 to 12 movies a month from the Disney vault. Disney-ABC Domestic Television also is making its way back into original scripted syndicated fare with “Legend of the Seeker,” produced by ABC Studios and “Xena, Warrior Princess” stalwarts Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, which Ms. Marinelli hopes will kick-start the genre. Ms. Marinelli and Disney-ABC now are preparing “Ugly Betty” and “Brothers and Sisters” for sale to the syndication market in the coming months. Ms. Marinelli said she’s already seen interest in both shows from cable buyers.

What: Ms. Marinelli is a sports fanatic, and has coached high school basketball and softball. “I think that’s what makes me so darn competitive,” she said. Rooting for the New York Giants and Yankees, she said she was disappointed to see former Yankees coach Joe Torre leave to helm the Los Angeles Dodgers. She said she went to more Dodgers than Yankee games last season because of the move.

  1. When I was in TV programming, Janice was one of the smartest syndicated sales people out there. Always enjoyed meetings with her at NATPE and congrats to her for being on this list!

  2. Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  3. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  4. Well, the post is actually the freshest on this laudable topic. I concur with your conclusions and will thirstily look forward to your future updates.

  10. Really nice post here – I don’t know why you don’t just get the most out of these tools whilst they are free.

  11. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  12. I think all of the fans may like it too.

  42. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  52. I’d have thought Tropicana is new/old shitstain of a logo would have gotten worst identity?- If your entire brand is compelled to go back again to the earlier feel, the men and women who created it ought to really suck.
