HBO Leads Dramas, Showtime Tops Comedies in Golden Globe Nominations

Dec 11, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Two HBO shows received Golden Globe nominations as best drama Thursday morning. Getting drama nods were “In Treatment” and “True Blood” from HBO, along with Showtime’s “Dexter,” Fox’s “House” and AMC’s “Mad Men.”
Premium cable networks also got the majority of the nominations in the comedy category, with NBC’s “30 Rock” and “The Office” joining Showtime’s “Californication” and “Weeds” and “Entourage” from HBO.
In all, HBO drew 22 nominations, followed by Showtime with 8 and NBC with 6. Cable networks totaled 34 nominations, while the broadcast networks drew 15. PBS had three nominees.
“In Treatment’s” Gabriel Byrne was nominated for acting, along with Michael C. Hall of “Dexter,” Jon Hamm of “Mad Men,” Hugh Laurie of “House” and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers of Showtime’s “The Tudors.” Mr. Hamm won the award at last year’s strike-abbreviated presentation.
Nominated for best performance by an actress in a drama were Sally Field of “Brothers and Sisters,” Mariska Hargitay of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” January Jones of “Mad Men,” Anna Paquin of “True Blood” and Kyra Sedgwick of The Closer.”
In the comedy category, actors Alec Baldwin of “30 Rock,” Steve Carell of “The Office,” Kevin Connolly of “Entourage” and Tony Shalhoub of “Monk” joined last year’s winner, David Duchovny of “Californication,” as nominees.
Last year’s winner, “30 Rock’s” Tina Fey,” is joined by Cristina Applegate (“Samantha Who?”), America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty”), Debra Messing (“The Starter Wife”) and Mary-Louise Parker (“Weeds”) as the actresses nominated for their performances in comedies.
In the supporting acting category, Neal Patrick Harris of CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother” faces four actors in HBO programming: Denis Leary in “Recount,” Jeremy Piven of “Entourage,” Blair Underwood in “In Treatment” and Tom Wilkinson in “John Adams.”
The Golden Globes combine movie and miniseries into one category, so Emmy winners “John Adams” and “Recount,” both from HBO, face off for the award here. Also nominated are ABC’s “A Raisin in the Sun,” HBO’s “Bernard and Doris” and PBS’ “Cranford.”
A full list of the Golden Globe nominees can be found here.
The 66th annual Golden Globes, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, will be handed out Jan. 11 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in a ceremony to be broadcast on NBC at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

  1. Love the nominees… subscribed to Showtime only because I am hooked on “Dexter”. Looks like the former HBO series “Six Feet Under” has launched the successful careers of almost all of their lead actors. Grateful for HBO and kudos go to Doctor House. Waiting now for new Season of American Idol.. I am VERY happy to have Jay Leno at the 10:00 hour.

  9. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
