CBS Shopping for ‘Light’ Replacement

Mar 29, 2009  •  Post A Comment

CBS may soon decide to pull the plug on “Guiding Light,” the longest-running daytime drama in television history.
While no final decision has been made, the network’s deal for the Procter & Gamble-produced drama—the least watched of the eight daytime serials currently on the air—ends in September. But if CBS does drop “Guiding Light,” it likely would lock in a decision within the next month, people familiar with the matter said. That would give writers a chance to tie up storylines.
CBS also would need to finalize new programming for the daytime hour that “Guiding Light” would be vacating.
In the most significant indication that the network is seriously pondering life without “Guiding Light,” CBS has been talking to outside studios about potential replacement programming for the show, sources said.
Possibilities under discussion include both game shows and talk shows. CBS could easily cut its programming costs for the hour in half by switching away from a scripted drama.
Representatives for CBS and P&G declined comment.
In addition to contracting with an outside studio for programming to replace “Light,” CBS daytime chief Barbara Bloom has been developing possible in-house candidates for the soap opera’s slot.
CBS executives are taking their time deciding the fate of “Light,” which has survived more than 70 years on radio and television. P&G also produces the CBS soap “As the World Turns.”
Nonetheless, a decision by CBS to end “Light’s” run on the network wouldn’t be a surprise.
The serial has been the subject of cancellation rumors for the better part of a decade. Those rumors became particularly intense within the past 18 months, but P&G threw something of a Hail Mary pass last year when it implemented a radical reworking of “Light’s” production model.
On Feb. 29, 2008, the show ditched its traditional storytelling style in favor of a lower-cost model that also was intended to give the show a more realistic, less staged feel. Around the same time, CBS renewed “Light” for the current season, retaining an option for an additional season.
Ratings for the show haven’t improved since the switch. “Light” is averaging a 0.9 rating among women 18-49 and a 1.6 household rating, according to Nielsen. Season-to-date, it’s averaging 2.17 million viewers and a 0.9 rating in women 18-49; season-to-season, it’s down 18% in viewers and down 25% in the demographic.
“Light” began life as a radio soap opera, moving to CBS television.
Moving to the Web?
It’s possible P&G or CBS could attempt to keep the show alive in some form on the Internet, though doing so likely would require another radical reinvention of its production model.
Much of the daytime drama business is struggling, with ratings for most soaps down significantly over the past decade. NBC is down to one soap, “Days of Our Lives,” following the decision to dump “Passions” in 2007 (the show survived one more season on DirecTV).

  1. I’ve never watched the show, but did watch its 2 competitors – Santa Barbara and General Hospital. It was a sad day when SB went away. As for GH, I gave up on it because life gets in the way. I think that’s part of the problem. It’s hard to commit to 5 episodes a week. If GH were on for only 2 days – or if each episode was 1/2 hour, I’d probably still watch. We’re busy people. Less and less people are home during the day. I know there’ll be some unhappy people if it is canceled – but it won’t be a surprise to those who understand the TV business model. Sadly the 70 year old women who enjoy this show, don’t understand the TV business model…

  2. I’m a 42 year old who has been watching GL since 1976 and would be crushed if it went off the air. I know that many fans have been watching GL for generations. Keep the Light Shining!

  3. I really don’t care about the TV business model. And I’m 38 not 70. I have money and I spend it but if CBS dumps my show their advertisers can rest assured I won’t be watching any of the CBS line up and therefore I won’t be seeing any of their advertisements. CBS and Bloom can take their cheaper crap (game show, reality tv, another talk show) and sit and spin on it.

  4. Sadly GL has been a scripted mess since Ellen Wheeler took over as EP. I think the production company hired her as a scapegoat to run the series into the ground.
Instead of revamping the show with core families, revitalizing sets she does the opposite and destroys the show in the process.
Even if the writing was there it would not make me tune back in because the show is also visually unappealing.
Even reality tv has an element of escapism, GL is only rural realism and for that I can just go a few miles down the road.

  5. Billie – Hope I didn’t offend you in my post. I’m 35, so we’re essentially the same age. I do find it interesting that if a show you enjoy is canceled, you would stop watching other shows you enjoy simply because CBS canceled one show you enjoy. That is what you’re saying, right? Personally, I wouldn’t be able to watch ANY channel if that’s what I did any time a show I liked was canceled. I can definitely name multiple shows on every network that I believe was canceled before its time.

  6. I’ve enjoyed watching Guiding Light for decades. The character, Rick Bauer, was born the same week as my first son, David. Rick’s mom, Leslie, and I went through our pregnancies together. Guiding Light is the only “soap” I watch. After viewing others through the years Guiding Light is the only one I really felt personally connected to. I will be extremely sorry if is eliminated from my daily schedule.

  7. While the ratings are low, I can’t imagine any replacement getting higher ratings. Daytime TV just isn’t what it used to be. Does CBS think they are going to find their next Price is Right or perhaps Match Game? I think that’s why CBS has kept GL these last few years because they know any replacement will probably not do much better ratings-wise.

  8. If P&G cancels Guiding Light, I will no longer purchase their products. I have watched them try to ruin this once fab show by skimping on money for salaries and hiring incompetent writers. Why not stay with the formula that worked? Even though storylines are inferior I will continue to watch as long as “The Light”exists. After that, that hour will no longer be in my lineup.

  9. I have been watching GL for at least 15 years. I am enjoying the show right now. I admit there are times when the storylines are boring or just to outrageous but I still tune in and watch everyday. I am really enjoying the storylines at the moment and would be sad of the show were to get cancelled. In my opinion cancelling GL for some stupid gameshow or talk show wouldn’t make a big difference in the ratings. Why would we need another one of those programs aren’t there enough of those out there that people already don’t watch. I hope they keep this soap on the air and as long as they do I will continue to watch. If they do cancel it then I will not watch CBS during that hour that GL was on.

  10. It would not surprise me if GL got the boot. It’s a horrible mess. These days, I only tune in when Reva Shayne (Kim Zimmer) is on. She’s still the only reason worth watching.

  11. I love Guiding Light and would HATE to see it cancelled!! Right now it’s one of the few shows I DVR, and I look forward to watching it every weekday. I used to watch GL back in the 90′s, but eventually lost interest in soaps in general. During the past few months I’ve been brought back to the show by the Olivia/Natalia storyline, and am constantly impressed by the quality of the writing and performances. I’ve even gotten used to the hand-held camera work and ‘lower-cost’ production values. I feel like they add a sense of immediacy that makes the storylines seem that much more realistic. I’m telling all my friends to watch, and hope we can all keep the light on!!

  12. I would be absolutely devastated if they cancelled GL. I have been watching for years, because my grandmother and mother watched it before me. I would boycott Proctor and Gamble products if they cancelled the show. I am sick of reality shows and there are more than enough talk shows and cops shows already. Also, only dedicated people dvr, tivo or watch GL. If some other ridiculous show is put on, no one will watch. Most people are still in school or work when soaps are on. I am a teacher. I DVR GL and watch it everyday. It is my relaxation and salvation. I would definitely feel like a member of my family went missing if I had to live without GL. Too many good shows are being cancelled in lieu of junk. Please keep “the light” shining!

  13. Okay P & G, I am in there with pjh, I will not purchase your products if you allow GL to be taken off the air. I started watching GL when I was 14 and I am now 39. It has a lot of memories for me because I started watching when I was with my grandmother when I was at her house during the summers. Then any days we were out of school I was right there in front of the TV watching CBS. I know there are times when it is a little dry, but we still love it. It would devastate my grandmother if you took it off the air, she will be 90 this year and has been watching/listening since this show started. Please don’t do away with it!

  14. AJ – I’m 43 and have watched GL religiously for 27 years, and if CBS cancels it I, like Billie, will cancel and permanently delete CBS from all televisions in my household the day it goes off the air. It is my favorite show, and one that I have devoted many, many hours watching over the years.
CBS has treated GL as a stepchild for the last 10 plus years, which is why it is in the shape it’s in. In 1996 they began allowing their owned affiliates (starting with WCBS in NYC) to move GL from its regular 3pm EST timeslot to 10am. Now, GL airs in the morning in about 10 of the major media markets across the country. GL’s morning lead-in is the low-rated CBS morning line-up, and people in general do not watch daytime dramas in the morning. That is why none air in the morning other than GL! Despite this horrible time slot situation, GL still manages to pull in almost the same ratings (within .2-.3 rating’s points) as the other daytime dramas, which air nationally in the afternoon.
CBS could move GL back to 3pm nationally, and give it a year to see if its ratings improve to the level of its other dramas. In my opinion they owe that to the 2 plus million viewers that watch GL and the rest of the line-up, and have for years. If not, then I suggest all GL fans turn off the rest of the CBS daytime line-up and we’ll see what impact that has on CBS and their status as the #1 daytime network. Maybe we should practice that for a week – turn off Y&R, B&B, and ATWT the week of April 20th enmass and see what happens to the CBS ratings.

  15. time to get rid of gl bring back the day time game show its long over due

  16. I think P & G should give GL at least a chance to improve. The genre itself is losing viewers. GL has the unenvyable position of being in last place in the ratings. I agree with the person who said that ever since Ellen Wheeler took over the reigns as EP, the show steadily went downhill. The writing was also terrible. With the cancellation of GL, the remaining six, may not be very far behind. I would hate to see GL cancelled, in the last few weeks, the writing has definitely improved, but it needs to be given a decent chance to rebound. I do not want to see another tabloid talk show or another idiotic game show. The rest of the CBS Daytime line-up isn’t any better in my opinion.

  17. Worst news of all-time. The only scripted show left that’s been around 70 years and counting.
CBS has to find a way to keep it b/c there’s generations of fans who will be displeased.
GL is bigger than just average program. Its a legend that airs every weekday and to pull the plug on it is not a good thing.
For another useless game show or another talk show?

  18. I love GL and would be seriously crushed and angry to see it go. I’m a third generation fan and grew up vicariouly in Springfield alongside the Four Muskateers. Even before that, I loved seeing Burt come out of the kitchen with a hot home cooked meal for the Bauers. Agreed the current writing could use some help, but that can be fixed. No reason to cancel the longest running show in broadcast history. Bring the Bauers back and keep on cookin!

  19. Some of you need to get a grip on reality. Television is a business, and unfortunately, when a business doesn’t perform, it usually folds. GL is that business that has underperformed. How often do you hear about the lowest-rated show being given as much extra time as GL has had. Some of you sound really ridiculous when you say you’re going to stop watching CBS or buying sponsor products, as if that will really get CBS to change their minds. They’d lose more money by continuing to air the show than they would lose from a bunch of people not buying Ivory Soap. Yes, it sucks that the longest-running soap could get the axe, but given GL’s performance in the last few years, it’s hardly surprising.

  20. I am 43 and have been watching GL for 38 years. (Mom started us early….)
The show is a mess now because they went to that cheap, ugly Shaky-Cam look. No wonder that nobody wants to watch it. And they scared off long-time viewers by straying from core families and forgetting series history.
How can ATWT be doing OK just one hour earlier, and it’s also from P+G ?
CBS should be ashamed of themselves for driving this cornerstone of TV (and radio) history into the ground! (I’m glad Mom isn’t here to see this slow, sad demise.)

  21. CBS needs to take heed of the generations of GL fans, IMO.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with the present storytelling way, and lower-rent production values. The audience will hang around if core values are applied in the show’s production. IMO, what is wrong with GL is that CBS has simply not been telling a compelling story line, and ignoring the audience’s intelligence.
This is nothing new to the one-time “Tiffany Network” CBS of late, as Exhibit A: “Moonlight”, demonstrated to me. How tone-deaf can CBS programmers be, to cancel a show when a monster book series for the target demo has a movie coming out in the next year? If CBS’s programmers had stuck with the show — IMO, natch — “Moonlight” could have been a primetime breakout in a second season, riffing off the buzz the “Twilight” series of books and movie.
Instead, TPTB at CBS decided the target demo wanted some sort of female angst ripped off from an Israeli show. That show “The Ex-List”, promptly crashed and burned, leaving CBS to eat the production costs of at least six or seven episodes — WHICH WERE IN THE CAN at the time the show was cancelled. (GL’s producers probably could have used that cash, but that’s another story.)
I mention this because the women closest in my life who couldn’t wait to see the next episode of “Moonlight” now don’t want anything to do with CBS on the Friday nights when they’re home.
Read and heed, CBS programming geniuses. I suspect there’s millions in the USA like the women I’ve just described.

  22. Some of you guys are going on as if this is a life or death matter. It’s a television show, it’s going to end eventually. Boycotting a network or production company isn’t going to bring it back and you’re only making yourself look bad. I’m sure 99.99999% of of you are mature adults that can get over a show being cancelled. If ratings are low, why should CBS keep it? Even though daytime TV isn’t what it used to be, 2million viewers isn’t good enough. It had a good 70+ year run between TV & radio. Just let it go and move on. And some people are blaming CBS – it’s not their show to run into the ground. They air it – tha’ts it. P&G, who produces the show are the ones responsible for it creatively.
I’d personally love to see some game show revivals in there…Match Game ’09, anyone?

  23. I have been a fan of Guiding Light since it was on the radio. My grandmother and I used listen to this show and many others. Later, I followed GL to television. What a difference and amazing improvements that I’ve witnessed as such a long-time fan. Although I agree that demograghics have changed, and therefore advertising dollars are going elsewhere. So, PG is influenced by this factor. Young women don’t stay home like they once did. So, soap operas like GL probably can’t survive. That’s a shame. The acting and directing is superb. Even when the show has been forced to use this bizarre new camera system and “bare bones set”, the cast and crew are still giving more than 100% to entertain us. I especially enjoyed the recent 25th high school reunion. I know that PG wants the money, but it will really will a shame if this soap opera is cancelled, because I fear the rest of the CBS soap operas will go too. For me now, soap operas fill a special place in my heart. I am retired from professional theatre and teaching drama. This is why emphasize with everyone connected with GL. However, I think PG already has made its decision. Thanks to everyone at GL for all that you do!

  24. It will be a sad day when and if CBS turns out the Light because of an archaic ratings system that does not clearly reflect the fans.
I’ve been a loyal viewer of GL for over 25 years. I am part of that important demographic of women. I’ve watched GL through everything. It’s the one CBS soap that I have stayed loyal to. I don’t watch any of the other ones. I will think twice about watching CBS if they do this to GL.
Guiding Light is not a mess. It has been on the upswing the last couple of months with the writing which has vastly improved under Jill Lorie Hurst’s watchful eye. The ratings have increased. CBS would be a fool not to notice the buzz around Otalia which has gained GL a whole new legion of fans. I’ve been constantly told of new fans who start watching because of Otalia and continue to watch because of other storylines as well. GL has the best cast in daytime. These are the hardest bunch of working actors that I know of.
Barbara Bloom and the other CBS executives are fools if they think that a game show will get the same legion of fans that GL has. The ratings will not improve in fact I suspect they will drop if GL is cancelled. Talk shows and game shows are a dime a dozen. GL has generations of fans watching.
    Keep The Light Shining.

  25. GL is a hot mess. It has been ruined in the last few years and the writing is awful. Hey PG I’m a professional writer. I’ll write for GL for half the salary. That should save some money AND improve ratings. It would be a shame to see this soap cancelled. And if it is, I can’t imagine that moron Ellen Wheeler overseeing the ending to the oldest soap opera in the US. OMG

  26. Guiding Light has been watched by my family since the early years. I think CBS shouldn’t give up on it yet. The new production style wasn’t necessarily the way to go.
If they do decide to cancel it, GL will be missed very much by its longtime fans. They really should have gone back to the family feel the show used to have. As the most traditional soap on the air, it would have made sense. I hope they at least try to bring back some of the faces we’ve missed who haven’t been on the canvas for a long time.
It’s sad to see a genre like daytime soaps die off like this.

  27. I would be very upset if they cancelled Guiding Light. I started watching it when I was in high school back in the early 1980s and have watched it ever since, except when work interfered for a period of time. I used to schedule college and law school classes around it! LOL! These days I have gotten back into watching it daily and I am seeing a return to some of the characters and relationships that I loved in the past, as well as some great new relationships. It would be a shame to take this show off of the air, because nothing that replaces it would inspire the same type of long term loyalty that this show has inspired in so many people. Please keep shining the Light!!

  28. Some thoughts:
1 – If it’s canceled, CBS is canceling, not P&G, so why boycott P&G? When a show produced by Warner Brothers is canceled by CBS do you boycott anything by Warner?
2 – For those of you that DVR the show – do you watch commercials?
3 – If CBS decides to cancel and show a game show or talk show, it can get LOWER ratings than GL and it be a better situation. A soap is much more pricey to produce than a talk show/game show. A game show can produce a year’s worth of episodes in a couple of months – it’s quite inexpensive.
4 – ATWT, which is produced by P&G, gets better ratings, that’s why it’s not in danger of being canceled.
5 – Moving the show back to 3PM will not solve the ratings issue.
6 – If canceled, there’s a good chance CBS will just give the hour back to the affiliates.
7 – Here’s a list of 40 soaps that were canceled. I watched 3 of them (Santa Barbara, Port Charles, and Generations). My mother watched Another World and Texas. Life went on for us and all the other people. If/When GL is canceled, life will go on for all of you. I promise.

  29. I have been watching Guiding Light for some time and it is my favorite soap. I would be devastated if it went off the air. I too would not purchase any Procter and Gamble products. I really hope this does not happen. I DVR this show and look forward to seeing it every day. Please keep the light shining for all of us fans.

  30. I am probably one of the worst people to be upset about this, as I am not a regular viewer of GL. However, I am a great fan of the soap genre in general and feel that the soaps have been on a decline for many years now. I understand all of the business particulars involved here, but that does not change the emotions raised buy all of this. I feel that once we lose GL, and unfortunately I think that may already be a done deal, the end of the daytime soap will not be far behind.
I recently looked at the ratings and saw that “General Hospital” and “One Life To Live” were just ahead of GL and not by much. What we have seen for the better part of the last 25 years is that as the current lowest rated soap is targeted and canceled, then the new lowest rated soap is targeted and then gone. Since almost all of the 8 current soaps are at about the same ratings wise, except for “Young and the Restless”, my real fear is that the entire genre will be gone in a couple of years.
The reason is that when a soap is canceled the ratings don’t go up for the other soaps, not even those directly opposite the canceled soap, rather to other types of programming or away from TV altogether.
I sincerely hope this can be avoided, but fear that a decision has already been made. When the soaps are gone, I will miss them!

  31. I’m italian, and here Guiding Light is “SENTIERI”.
It’s the drama most famous in italy and it can’t be canceled.WWWW GUIDING LIGHT!!!!

  32. Maybe if Guiding Light was on at 3:00PM instead of 10:00 AM it would have a better chance. Most people are at work – students are in school – mothers are busy with their children’s activities. The afternoon would be much better. I have been watching Guiding Light since Bert Bauer was a young mother. My Grandmother and I used to watch it when I was a little girl (many, many years ago). They are also interupted so often by news reports and press conferences at 10:00 AM and then put it on at 2:00AM – the middle of the night. How fair is that. Give them a descent time and I assure you it will be fine. You people that want game shows – watch the game show network and leave Guiding Light alone. I watch the show every day when I come home from schoool – yes I am a teacher – and it is an hour of take me away from the craziness of school!

  33. I’m 25 and I’m a NEW viewer.
I think the stories have improved to the point that it’s better than your average soap. These stories are bringing in new viewers, isn’t that part of what the show needs?
If you want better ratings you need new viewers, stick around longer and they might just get some more. I really hope they don’t cancel this show, its starting to get even better.

  34. Seems to me that GL should be kept around with new writers and some cross promotion. There will never be a soap on that started on radio and last this long. That is the dynamics of the soap. It is a saga with characters that live and die and we get to see the next generation. Perhaps if the show had focused on the main family the ratings might be better. Do DVR tapings count in the ratings?

  35. There is nothing about Guiding Light that can’t be improved by better writing and better executive vision. Soaps succeed when they are interesting, and that’s all about writing. They also succeed with good characters, not just good-lookers. Put that together and GL will, along with some decent advertising, succeed again. I’m just a viewer who doesn’t know as much as the people who run TV (ha) but I must say, I can’t understand some of the stupid decision made by TV Executives. It ranks with Bankers and FEMA.
    Robert

  36. If CBS does indeed cancel GL, why not move it to another network? It would be a great NBC addition as
a lead in to Days of our Lives or move it to ABC and ditch All My Children? Other P&G soaps survived years after CBS cancelled them.
The Edge of Night 10 more years on ABC (my all time favorite soap that should have never been cancelled).
Search for Tomorrow ran 4 more years on NBC.

  37. I have watched GL since I was around 7 years old. I am now 31. I would really miss GL if it went off the air. Even when there are episodes I dont like I still watch because I always have I guess. GL is a part of my daily life. That might sound sad but when you have watched it as long as I have it is just an everyday thing. I will be sadly disappointed if they cancel GL. If they would just listen to the viewers they would get their ratings up. You would think that they would listen to the viewers since without us they wouldnt make any money. Very disapponted in the executives and EW for not listening to the viewers.

  38. The only true reason to be sad about the passage of “Guiding Light” is that a very cherished piece of television history. Few shows have had its longevity, but the reality is that television is, first and foremost, a business. Whether CBS decides to drop game shows into that time slot or a talk show, or even give the affiliates an extra hour for that daypart, whatever they decide to do would be a business decision. The folks at P & G Productions could take whatever money they spend currently on “GL” and either bolster their remaining soaps OR turn it back into their core business of household products to bolster them. It would be sad to see “GL” go, but its passing may open up doors for other good things to happen.

  39. For me ,any cancellation of any soap opera in favor of a game show is cause for celebration. For every veiwer who will stop buying the sponsors’ products, new viewers will show up and buy the products.

  40. AJ your an ass

  41. If they take this show off, I will boycott CBS AND P&G! They’ve done everything possible to ruin it, but they’ve butchered ATWT much more with their hack writers; I won’t even look at that one anymore. But I dearly love GL. When they cancelled AW I boycotted NBC for over 5 years. I wouldn’t even let someone flash the channel when surfing! Not only that, since GL is the only thing I watch on TV at all, I will cancel my cable, which will be no loss without GL. I’ve watched off and on for 48 years, since I was 3 and watched with my grandmother, when it was 15 minutes and Bert Bauer was on every day. I love the characters and the humor and the acting on this show and think it’s the best. And I have watched every soap that’s now on at one time or another. GL is hands down the best show on character development and acting, bar none! The writing has really improved, and the return of Phillip has given the show new life. P&G are the ones who have ruined this show with the budget they have given it. I am really enjoying the new look now, as it’s so much better than the 3 or so sets they were down to before they started this. People WANT to watch a 5 day show. What they DON’T want is stupid ridiculous writing that insults the intelligence of the viewer. They have taken over most of the shows now, and THAT is why the ratings have plummetted for the shows, because a lot of the drivel (like ATWT) can no longer be watched. The writing is what has made the shows go downhill. We can live with bad production, if there are good stories, good actors, core families and vets. Uhm, like there USED to be!

  42. I would hate to see GL cancelled. I used to watch it years ago and just started to watch again this February. I like the new format of filming. I also wish there was a way for the networks to know that people do record and watch their shows. Where does that show up in the ratings?

  43. I’ve only been watching GL for a couple of years but, it is without a doubt, my favorite. And now it is the only soap I watch. I go out of my way to see it. If it goes, I can’t see anything replacing it. And I am one of the people who like what Ellen Wheeler has done & the new format. It sets the show apart.

  44. Don’t do it CBS! I’ve been watching GL religiously for over a decade and I’m only 22 and I dream about watching GL for a very very long time. Don’t ruin 70+ years of history. I think they need to think this through and realize that GL isn’t THAT far behind in the ratings. I won’t watch CBS anymore if GL is off the air and that is a bold statement, but GL is very special to me, as it is to a LOT of people. I love the way the show looks now. It is REALISTIC. Not like the other stupid soaps with the same fake set and the same fake people. GL actors are extremely talented and I love seeing them in real environments, like real people. Keep the light on!

  45. I think the real question here is would GL viewers be willing to pay to watch the show every day on the Internet?
If so, fans should rally now to encourage P&G to develop a web pay-per-view business model that will keep GL “on the air,” without interruption, if CBS cancels it. If P&G got a dollar or so per viewer per web episode (a $20-30/mo. subscription), would it be able to justify keeping the show in production?

  46. Looks like a lot of people want it to stay on the air. Better start banging the monkeys and get an online petition going. Call CBS, email them. SAVE THE LIGHT

  47. Guiding Light has been part of broadcast history for 72 years! While the show has had some ups and downs it has shown alot of improvement as of late and deserves to remain on the air!
I have watched this show as long as I can remember. If GL goes, I am afraid the whole genre of soaps will end up going along with it. This would be a shame. I personally have no interest in watching any more talk shows, game shows, news or local programming. I enjoy watching the soap format and the stories that go along with it.
If GL goes, then so does my CBS viewship.

  48. To “Call you on it”:
I believe you meant to say, “AJ you’re an a**.”
I’m not sure why my previous posts make me an a** though. Call me crazy, or I guess in your case, call me an a**, but I thought they were well informed posts.
You may think I’m an a**, but at least I’m educated and know the difference between “your” and “you’re”
Maybe if you watched less GL and read a book, you’d know too.
    Hey, you’re right, I am an a**!
Note: I don’t believe in cursing on blogs that can be read by children, thus my usage of the asterisks.

  49. Well this just sucks. I DVR it and watch it when I can.

  50. Guiding Light has a wonderful stable of talented actors/actresses – but has long ago moved away from centering stories around the characters & gone off in odd directions. I finally gave up with the whole San Cristopo (I know I butchered the spelling) but it was such a bad storyline and the show continued its characters. I tuned back in when Marj returned as Alexandra (she is an incrediable actress & a wonderful character that is too little used). I loved the Alexandra & Buzz flirtation & the battle with Phillip & Alan-Michael from years ago; howver, the show did not focus on her & still hung on to Alan – who I find boring. The show needed to find its core – the rich (Spaulding) vs the locals. And too many characters working for the police. The good ole days are gone & the show will mostly likely be soon as well.

  51. Thanks for giving us an opportunity to express the public’s opinion. I don’t understand how you are getting so low ratings for Guiding Light when people watching it on the cbs website, blogging about it on many sites, and watching it on CBS tv. If it takes a few weeks for viewing to catch up with ratings then you should wait because you are about to have a landslide. Many of our bloggers have watched Guiding Light for years while others have left and are now returning. Crystal Chappell has given you 10 years of outstanding work and she now is greater than ever. Please continue to entertain us. Thanks.

  52. I’ve never watched the CBS lineup, have always been a fan of AMC and OLTL on ABC. But if GL is going in the same general direction as AMC I can see why they are cancelling it. All My Children has become an absolutely unwatchable mess with the worst writing you can imagine….almost as if the writers hate the actors and are just TRYING to embarrass them. Daytime TV in general seems to leave alot to be desired anymore.

  53. I grew up watching this show with my mom for years. This soap was GREAT back in it’s day. I have watched some of it now and do not care for it. All of the “good” characters are gone. Well, i see that they just brought back Phillip.
I do have a great suggestion…if CBS does cancel Guiding Light, how about making Bold and the Beautiful a full hour. That is a great soap and I DVR it and the Young and the Restless everyday. I just wanted to pass my suggestion along. Please consider……

  54. id rather watch the test pattern than another game show or reality tv

  55. i would be really upset if it were taken off the air i am a stay at home mom and i watch all four of the daytime shows on cbs i love them all please dont take them off the air it helps me to get through my day my son died 8 months ago and it is really hard to get through the day it helps to beable to watch my stories it helps me get through my day

  56. i would be really upset if it were taken off the air i am a stay at home mom and i watch all four of the daytime shows on cbs i love them all please dont take them off the air it helps me to get through my day my son died 8 months ago and it is really hard to get through the day it helps to beable to watch my stories it helps me get through my day

  57. I’d be so sad if my favorite soap was taken off the air – I’ve been watching GL for almost 30 years! Go on CBS.com and click on Guiding Light anb WAY at the bottom of the screen is a “feedback” link…leave a comment and help save our soap!!!!! :)

  58. I feel for the fans of this soap. It may not be a matter of life or death, but it is definitely a loss for true fans.
The Edge of Night stopped production at the end of 1984 (when I was 19) and I still miss it. AOL had episodes available for a time, but those are now gone too. The show was well written and well acted, storylines plotted out over many months with twists and turns. I was always watching the ratings since I was worried about cancellation and that sadly came to be. No show since has come close in my opinion.

  59. Hey….I have a thought. Why don’t we ask Obama for a bailout for GL? Seriously? I mean, it’s not the actor’s or writer’s or producer’s or anyone’s fault that the show can’t bring in the ratings/money. And I mean, how unfair would it be for all of these people to be out of their JOBS! Why….I bet they’d never be able to get another one and then what would they do? We should definitely ask the government to step in here.

  60. I LOVE GL and have been watching it for over 20 years! I record it and watch it later (I am at work when it is on, as most other soap operas and people). Please don’t cancel it. I don’t want to see another talk show or game show. I won’t watch them.

  61. I LOVE GL and have been watching it for over 20 years! I record it and watch it later (I am at work when it is on, as most other soap operas and people). Please don’t cancel it. I don’t want to see another talk show or game show. I won’t watch them.

  62. I have such great memories of watching Guiding Light with my grandma growing up and I continued to watch it well into my adulthood. But like one of the other people said, life gets in the way and I had to stop. Now, I’m a stay at home mom and a few weeks ago I tried to start watching it again. I missed the characters and wanted to see what was going on. I was sorely disappointed. I hate the new format. And where the heck did they find the writers? Some of the characters I watched a few years that were children are grown up and others are still small children. And the relationships are all so unbelievable anymore. Marina married to Mallet? The man who was married to her aunt Harley? I remember when Harley and Mallet first got together, that was a great story. Or Beth and Cooper?? Really? Olivia decides she might be gay? I remeber when they brought Olivia onto the show and I hoped she’d be long gone by now. What the heck happened to Josh and Reva? Remember the Frank, Eleni and Alan Michael triangle or, OH MY GOSH, remember Nick and Mindy? Cassie and Richard, Michelle and Danny? God, I loved this show. So many of the greatest characters and story lines are dead or gone. What the heck happened to this show? How could they allow people to come in and butcher it? If they do decide to cancel the show, it won’t make a difference to me, I can’t watch anymore. I miss it already.

  63. They did this to Dark Shadows and I think a lot of people are still wishing that show was on the air. Why would we need yet another Talk show? Realty shows are horrible.JMO.

  64. First, I know it sucks when a favorite show goes off the air but business is business. These shows need to produce better quality programming in order to keep themselves on the air (I am a soap fan but the stories on just about ALL shows have been lackluster). Adveristers don’t want to pay money was something that gets so low viewere. Advertising dollars equal the budget the show will get. Second, while CBS will be doing the cancellling P&G has made it known they want out of the soap business.

  65. I LOVE THIS SHOW! I am a (almost) daily watcher! I started watching it with my mom when I was in high school and we both watch it every day! I don’t know how they can take such a long standing show off the air!

  66. My Grandmother got me into the “soaps” and we always watched the same channel. My cousins and I used to run home from school so we could catch Guiding Light. I’m 43 now, and my 15 and 12 year olds both love to watch Guiding Light with me in the evening after supper. We tape it on the DVR. If I delete an episode before they’ve had a chance to see it, they get upset with me.
What I’m trying to say is that this show is multi-generational. My Grandmother loved it, my mother loved it, I love it and my children love it. We would hate to see one of the only constant things in our lives go away. We have known the families and storylines on this show forever. They feel almost like family.
I know I’m just one little voice, but sometimes one voice can make a difference. I DON’T WANT GUIDING LIGHT TO BE CANCELED!!

  67. I am 42 and have been watching Guiding Light since I was a little girl when my mom would always watch it. I watch it daily and look forward to seeing it. If it does go off the air, I’m always up for a good SOAP

  68. I have been watching GL for almost 20 years and i would be simply crushed if it were canceled. Of course the ratings arent going to be the same these days, there are less people at home during the day because more woman are working mothers. My 3 year old daughter even watches the show and could sing you the opening song! I know that there are alot fo GL fans that have stuck by the soap through its ups and downs, if they decide to cancel this show it will be like a big up yours too all of us over the years who were committed to this show. It will be a sad day if they cancel this show…what will i do at the end of my busy day to unwind with?

  69. OMG, I have been watching GL since I was a little girl and can’t imagine, coming home from work and not being able to watch it anymore! I even have my husband watching it with me…..it would be a real shame if they did go of the air. I think there is enough talk shows already!!! I do not want GL to be cancelled!!!!!

  70. I have been watching Guiding Light for 28 years. The writing has gotten terrible. Ellen Wheeler can be blamed for the shows bad ratings.
I only watch when I know Josh and Reva are going to be on screen togehter. My DVR has been turned off for weeks with the hit that Josh maybe hooked up with someone else yet again to keep he and Reva apart. They want to have some viewers. Bring Josh and Reva back together…that would draw some ratings.
Ellen Wheeler, if you set out to kill a 70+ year old show, Congratulations…you have succeeded!

  71. I agree with most of the viewers, GL is ‘generational”. I started watching all CBS soaps as a child, however I am quite fond of GL. I can not say it enough…. IT IS MY FAV SOAP!! I’d rather lose Y&R before I loss GL and I love Victor and the whole crew. But, PLEASE dont take my GL away from us! I use to wonder how long the soaps would last since to me they’ve been on a lifetime. However, I never wanted to actually see that day in MY LIFETIME!
    JOSH & REVA “ALWAYS”

  72. Please don’t cancel GL! Who can we write to in protest?

  73. Say it isn’t so. I have watched loyally since 1983. That would be the worst thing.

  74. I think P&G would be absolutely out of their minds to cancel Guiding Light. If they do I will not watch any shows brought out by them. They should really consider giving Guiding Light at least another year or two to get their ratings up. P&G please reconsider and give Guiding Light another chance to get it right again.

  75. I am disappointed in this news. I used to love watching it with my Mom and Grandmother. I admit that I don’t watch it much anymore on TV but still know many people who do. Many spoke about the internet watching…why don’t they count those hits. I watch it there because it is convenient…And you know what? You are FORCED to watch the commercials. That they can ignore those numbers is tragic. Maybe this is just a scare tactic to wake up the fans and get folks to watch the show again (if they stopped).

  76. PLLLLLLLEASE dont cancel GL…I love it!! I’m 26 and have been watching since I was about 10 or 11. I have many more viewing years in me!!!

  77. Sad.
But I could use the extra hour. And I know I won’t be using it to watch television.

  78. PLLLLLLLEASE dont cancel GL…I love it!! I’m 26 and have been watching since I was about 10 or 11. I have many more viewing years in me!!!

  79. I’m 34 and have watched for decades. Its the only soap I watch and I TEVO it. I will be devastated!!!! BUT THEIR WRITING SUCKS AND HAS BECOME BBBOOOOORRRRING!!! No I will not watch another program because I’m not that into daytime soaps. Just Guiding Light because I have watched the characters for years. I am even less into daytime talk shows. So I will be lost to them as a daytime viewer. I will watch online if they keep it there. THE PROBLEM is that they have kept old BORING characters and storylines too prominent!! REVA IS NOT INTERESTING ANYMORE!! NEITHER IS BUZZ AND HIS HEAVY OVERACTING!! They killed Hottie Coop after giving him 2 boring romances. Exciting characters are Jonathan, Lizzie, Bill, Dinah when she was all freaky!! Remy and Christina can be exciting if they try harder! Phillip is back and that is TOTALLY exciting!!! BRING BACK THE SANTOS MOB STUFF (New Michelle actress though)!! BRING BACK THE INTERNATIONAL SPY CRAP OF ROGER THORPE DAYS!! With FRESHER actors!! Jeffrey O’Neill is BORING too! Some of these actors that they are loyal too are snoozers! Beth – snooze – Frank – snooze – Marina – snooze – Daisy is young but still SNOOZE – Ashley is a TOTAL SNOOZE!!! Not the characters, BUT THE ACTORS!! Beth’s storyline could be exciting with another actress! Edmund is exciting! The Damian/Omen kid is an exciting murderous little fiend!  Natalia and Olivia could be spicier, not so guilty and tired. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE A NEW ACTRESS FOR BLAKE!!!

  80. PLEASEPLEASE

  81. I have been watching Guiding Light since I was in high school and I am now 61 years young. I would be terribly disappointed if Guiding Light was taken off the air. Sure, it has gone through some tough times, but recently with Phillip and Edmund returning, the story-line is getting very exciting and also with Reva’s pregnancy. The actors are really good people…as shown how they go around the US helping others. Please keep this show on for them and for all of us who look so forward to seeing the show daily.

  82. I have watched Guiding Light since 1963, when I was 13. I watched it with my grandmother and my mother. When my daughters were small and we went to visit Grandma Gladys in New York, we would all sit and watch Guiding Light from 3-4PM. It was Grandma’s rest period. To entice the little ones to sit quietly, Grandma would give them Cheetos and juice – this came to be known as the Cheeto Party, which my girls (in their twenties now) talk about to this day, although Great Grandma Elizabeth and Grandma Gladys are both gone. Sometimes when I watch GL, I swear I can feel the presence of these two great ladies watching right along with me! Losing GL would be a great tragedy. I watch several other soaps and I honestly believe that Guiding Light is superior to most of them in writing and especially acting. Just take a gander at B&B and AMC! The dialogue is laughable! I hope the powers that be at CBS will realize how much GL means to so many viewers! I too will boycott other CBS shows if the cancellation does occur.

  83. Please don’t cancel GL! It is the one and only daytime drama that I watch. It is on from 2-3pm where I live and although I cannot watch it at that time, I do watch every episode online each night. I have been watching it since I was 6 years old, I am now 21. Please don’t cancel it!
I think that if it was on at 2pm or 3pm EVERYWHERE it would have a fairer chance. Who watches soaps at 10am? I don’t even watch TV that early as I have work or school to go to.
As for production and writing, the writing has gotten a little better in the past few weeks. And the new production techniques used to cut costs are actually cool. I like them and it makes it seem more real.
PLEASE KEEP GL ON AIR!! PLEASE!

  84. While the news is certainly disappointing, there is also a morbid sense of relief as well! I’ve been watching LIGHT since 1977 when the show was REALLY worth watching (with the introduction of the Reardons and the Spauldings, Roger/Holly/Ed, Alan/Elizabeth/Mike, Laurel Falls, Cedars 4 West Nurses Station, Wired for Sound, etc.) Everyone has their fond memories of GL’s glory days, but these days ain’t them! Simply access any vinage GL episode on YouTube and contrast it to the “Peapack Chronicles” we have to endure each day and you’ll see how GL used to know how to tell a story! I wrote an op-ed piece for SOAP OPERA WEEKLY a couple years back and compared watching GL like waiting for a terminal relative to die; you don’t want the inevitable to happen, but you know they’d be in a better place. This show is a SHELL of the greatness it used to be, and no…it’s not “good enough” anymore just to have it on the air when it barely resembles the landmark show most of us have devoted decades to following. (Hopefully Wheeler/Kreizman and Co. will be BARRED from having anything to do with another daytime drama once they run this icon into the ground!)

  85. Please do not cancel Guiding Light!!! It;s my favorite!!

  86. I say throw some money into the show, get them back in the studio. Get some behind the scenes talent, because right it seems like a bunch of college students are running the show.
Fire a ton of the actors and just focus on the main loveable characters that we love. If the show doesn’t improve cancel it in it’s 75th year. 75 years on TV is a good number to go out on.
If GL is canned the next to go will be Days of our Lives it’s the next lowest soap, then it be another. either way someone will have to be lowest rated soap.
Personally I think day time soaps are on the way out. Like we need another game show, or talk show, or court room show..ugh!
Keep GL, it just needs a loving had to help it out.

  87. I have been watching GL since 1967 when I was in middle school. The script has deteriorated over the past few years, but I don’t find it as rediculous as B & B. There isn’t ever anything new there. The same ol’ two families over and over and over and over. GL is the only show that I watch regularly and TEV0 daily just in case I am delayed and can’t get home in time. If it goes, I will no longer even try to watch any of the other CBS lineup. And I won’t feel a strong alligiance to P&G!

  88. I have been watching guding light since I was a child with my mother it was on for fifteen minutes then, back in the early fifties.
I did stop watching for a bit when I went back to work full time and vcrs and dvrs were’nt out yet, but as soon as they were out I started taping Guiding light.
I remember Pappa Bauer, Maida, Bert, Ed and when Rick and Mike were kids. I remember Hope, Maureen, Leslie all the Bauers, I am 62 years young now, I work full time, but I DVR Guiding Light everyday and watch it when I come home from work, that is my escape and my relaxation before I have to start dinner and laundry.
I do not need a game show or a reality show, just Guidng Light, it has been part of my childhood memories and my adult memories and I would miss it terribly.

  89. Try to save GL
    E- Mail: audsvcs@cbs.com
    Letter Rip: gl@cbs.com
Or even call the following Proctor Gamble product number:
    Guiding Light- 866 – 695 – 1859
    and help us save GL!

  90. Such sad news. I have been watching Guiding Light for about seven years, and started when I was around ten years old. I haven’t been watching that much lately, because a lot of my favorite characters and storylines are gone. Guiding Light truly is not what it used to be. I loved GL around 2003. I’m pretty sure that was the year with Marah, Shayne, and Marina (the old Marina that actually had talent.) I loved the storylines back in the day (haha even though it was only like six years ago!) The storylines now just aren’t believable. For example, Reva and Jeffrey. Together. GROSS and disgusting. Especially the fact that she’s having his baby (or had his baby..)Anyway, GL is not interesting anymore. The storylines are awful, some of the best actors are gone (Marty West, Lindsey McKeon, Aubrey Dollar, Laura Wright, etc.) and it isn’t pleasing to watch. I’m sad that something I grew up with might get cancelled, but at the same time, drastic measures would be needed to save it. It’s almost better just to cancel it, sadly.

  92. I can’t believe that CBS & Proctor Gamble haven’t noticed that when local affiliates started screwing around with the time GL is shown in different locations had, it may have had something to do with ratings. Here in Orlando, FL it comes on at 9 AM. Only die hard fans (I am one) will watch a soap that comes on at that time of day. It is my understanding that it is shown at different times in many locations.
I guess it’s very important for CBS to have 2 Dr. Phil shows every day. He says the same thing to different people every day, twice a day. What are his ratings?? Is it the “O” factor?
The only reason I watch other CBS shows is because of GL. It is my favorite, by far.
Do you seriously believe that you will have better ratings for another talk show or some lame game show? We really need a few more of those – how many have come and gone in the past two years? I would be interested in seeing the ratings if that happens.

  93. Don’t panic, LIGHT lovers. We longtime viewers have been hearing cancellation rumours since the late 1990s. The official report this week is that CBS officials are “considering” cancelling GL. Of course it’s being considered; ratings are low, and the current deal expires in September. But CBS has numerous other shows with middling ratings and deals which will soon expire— on the daytime AND primetime schedules. I’m sure they are all being “considered” for cancellation. In addition, GL is just now starting to enjoy surging buzz related to Grant Aleksander’s return and especially to the Olivia/Natalia pairing. CBS will want to let these positive developments play out.

  94. @ Nikki, I wasn’t even going to comment, and then you brought up Nick & Mindy. Those were the good old days. My problem with GL is that 1) it comes on at 3 pm. I’m at work. I catch it on my days off. I don’t mind the new, cheaper format. It’s just that as others have mentioned, the storylines are awful. Bring back the characters and families that made the show what it is. Remember Quinton and Nola? Vanessa never mentions her brother. What’s up with that? Gosh, I long for the good old days of GL.
Maybe the soap network should pick up and produce it. They’ve already got the fan base. Or better yet, maybe it’s time the networks start airing the soaps at night. I mean if you think about it, that’s all popular shows like Grey’s Anatomy are–prime time soaps. Maybe if fans had an opportunity to view the shows during prime time the ratings would be better,

  95. I just can’t understand? Millions of us love Guiding Light. Let our voices be heard! The changes, the music, production, writing..etc.. please save our show! Listen to the FANS!

  96. Sigh another Show that will be Canceled. I dont watch it but my Mom does.
CBS is Crap latly. If takeing down GL and putting up some shitty Game Show or Some Reality Show. Will not make Good Rateings.
I stoped watching CBS after they Canned Jericho. Only shows i watch on there are Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theroy. 2 Shows.
CSI is going down the Tubes/

  97. I really hope you do not cancel GL i have been watching it for years and years and I just love it i will be crushed if you cancel it for some game show or talk show we have enough of those, sure the story lines get boring sometimes but its a soap opera what do you expect, please dont cancel you WILL have alot of very upset WOMEN out there and you don’t want that. Please leave GL alone don’t shut our light out.

  98. I would be devastated with the cancelling of GL..as I have many memories of watching this show with my mother over 50 years ago when I came home from school for lunch and I have been following the show ever since…the cast are “family” ..PLEASE don’t let the light go out!
This is the best soap on the air!

  99. PLEASE DON’T TAKE THE SHOW OFF THE AIR. I LOOK FORWARD TO GUIDING LIGHT EVERYDAY.AND I DVR IT ALWAYS. I LOVE IT.THE LINE HAS BEEN GREAT LATELY.YOU NEED TO BRING JOSH AND REVA BACK TOGETHER. NEED TO SAY I HEARD RUMORS OF REVA LEAVING THE SHOW.. PLEASE DON’T LET THAT HAPPEN EITHER. I HAVE WATCHED THIS SHOW SINCE I WAS ABOUT 10 AND I AM 37 NOW.GIVE IT A CHANCE CBS!!.

  100. Please don’t take it away, my mom got me hooked 13 years ago and I have hardly missed a show yet, I tivo this and ATWT every day. They already crused me when they killed Gus, I had a HUGE crush on him!

  101. I may be unusual, in that I do love GL, but also totally see the business side of this. It’s the advertising that pays for these soaps, which are way more expensive then talk or game shows, and with so many people skipping ads, there are just fewer and fewer sources of revenue to support the shows. They have to pay so many people, it’s become so it’s simply not cost-effective, given the number of people watching.
All of the soaps are facing it – the current economic crises is just ratcheting up the stakes.

  102. please don”t cancel my favorite soap my mother listen to it when she was a girl she’s passed now but when every i hear bert bauer mentioned i feel my mothers presents and i feel like a little girl again watching the light with my mom just like she did listening to the light on the radeo with mom my grandmother who i never knew she passed before i was born

  103. Please do not cancel Guiding Light. I have watched the show for well over twenty years and feel like the characters are extended family members. Soap viewers are extremely loyal…and the vast majority of us work during the week and tape or dvr the soaps. The old rating system is not accurate as it does not take into account those of us who either dvr/tape the show or watch it on the internet. Boycott CBS? Yes I will. When CBS canceled Jericho I seriously considered boycotting CBS. If Guiding Light is canceled, CBS will be canceled in my home. Please think long and hard about canceling this venerable soap. There are no fans like soap fans.

  104. The show needs a juicy story line. They really should have Natalia & Olivia hook up. The ratings would soar. Reeva & Josh need to be back together as well.

  105. Let it cancel..Maybe they will move Bold and the Beautiful to an hr…

  106. I’m with you Storm…G.L. is the worst CBS soap

  107. Ive have been watching Guilding Light since i was a little girl, like my mom and her mom when it began on the radio. I think it is a really bad decision
to pull this program off the the air. I think it gives you a break from our busy lifes to just sit and relax and get cot up in the lives of these fictional characters. They give you a chance to relize that you are not the only people with problems
that everyone has the same problems as the next guy. Example such as marriages, breakups, illness
and so on. So please did not cancel this show as I may be a small percentage of people who watch
But this is our extended family which we do not want to give up

  108. Please do not cancel GL!!!! I am 26 years old and have been watching this show for my entire life. I started watching with my late grandmother when she kept me as a child. She loved the show and so does my mom. This show is epic and connects generations of families together. The writing has been awful lately with boring storylines, for the most part. That is what has really hurt this show. The actors are wonderful and super talented (except Rafe, Ashley, and Daisy–they are terrible actors!) Get rid of the writers and bring in some that will liven up the show with interesting story lines!!!! Don’t give up on the show!

  109. I would be devastated if CBS cancels Guiding Light. I am 42 and watched GL since 1978 (30 years). I have been dedicated and never missed the show. If CBS cancels GL, I will quit watching CBS and quit buying P&G products.

  110. If they drop Light, I drop CBS. It’s the only show I watch on CBS anyway. Soaps are great… and the longer they run, the better, the cheesier the better.. they’re soaps for cryin out loud, they’re fun!

  111. Did not read all comments – maybe this is a repeat, but… Why doesn’t CBS let this hour go all together and return this to the local affiliates and let them fill the hour with something that meets their local interest. There are plenty of syndicated shows around that could fit.

  112. I grew up watching Guiding Light and it is # 1 on my DVR and the first thing my husband and I watch every evening as we eat supper. CBS has one thing to brag about with other networks can not top and that is that they are home to the longest running drama in history and when they dump the Light they lose that claim. Better writing and a return to the core families is all the Light needs to soar again. It has improved lately and I love Phillip being back.

  113. I just found out about this, and I’m sadden beyond all words could say. I started watching GL when I was 14 I’m now 51.I look forward to seeing Reva and Josh, they were always my favorites. they gave me hope and made me believe in love and second chances. isn’t there something else that could be done.In a world that’s constantly changing can’t we have this show to hold onto? Isn’t there enough talk and game shows? Please look for other means to get more viewers, don’t take it from those of us that have been loyal!!!
    you’ll all be so missed!!!
THIS IS THE BEST SOAP OUT THERE! FIND ANOTHER WAY TO SAVE IT!!!

  114. I am so upset about this. I grew up watching this with my grandmother and have passed it down to 2 of my four grown daughters, one of whom passed away unexpectedly at the age of 28 this past Christmas. It was 2 months before I could bring myself to watch it again and cried the entire episode. I am now watching it faithfully again. Please save it!!

  115. This is truly sad news. It really is the death knell to all soaps, in my opinion. If a show with such a rich and incredibly long tradition as Guiding Light goes off the air, then I truly feel that it will only be a matter of time before the rest of the remaining daytime dramas will go the way of the dinosaur as well. I just can’t believe that this is how the uniquely American tradition of the continuing daytime drama meets its end… with a dull thud. Americans didn’t invent the drama (the Greeks did and Shakespeare perfected it) but it was here that saw the rise of the medium, first in radio “soap operas” and then onto television. Since that time, the “soap” spread into Prime Time with great success (Dallas, Dynasty) and the format became popular in practically every country around the globe, many countries producing their own soaps, such as the UK’s EastEnders and Coronation Street to Australia’s Neighbours. Mexico lead a revolution of novelas, their version of our soap operas, that lasted mere months instead of many years.
It’s difficult to imagine how quickly the fall came: from the 1980s when many soap opera stories became part of the popular culture (such as Luke & Laura from General Hospital) to being a mere side-thought to the daytime programmers. I guess the decline truly started back in the mid-1990s when the O.J. Simpson trial pre-empted most soap operas for months at a time. The ratings never recovered. Add today’s bad economy and eroding viewership and you have the perfect recipe for cancellation.
When the Guiding Light of daytime dramas goes dark in September, it will certainly cast a dark shadow on the few remaining soaps, as their viewership continues to decline each year as well. Such a sad day… I know I’ll miss the escapades of Reva and Josh, the Spaulding and Bauer families and the township of Springfield…

  116. My grandma will be crushed!!! She watches everyday! She’s discovered the DVR button so maybe she’s saved the episodes she DVR-ed. Also, I recently showed her how to watch her fav shows online so hopefully she’ll be able to watch archived episodes or somethin…. Yikes, I must call her and try to think up more solutions for this potential devastation!

  117. This is horrible, I cannot believe CBS is going to pull the plug on this soap. It is not only a soap, it brings a lot of true to life stories along with it and subjects that some people might not agree with., but please do not discontinue this show. You are going to have a great number of people that are going to be very dissapointed in this decision.

  118. Not shocked, but Very Disappointed to hear the unhappy news that CBS plans to cancel Guiding Light. I record every episode and watch all of them. 10am is an odd time slot. I have thought for a long while now that GL is an excellent show for a Prime Time slot! Now probably on a cable channel, as CBS seems to not care to do whatever it takes to preserve this standout show for its many legions of fans, in U.S. and around the world. I do not enjoy much of anything else CBS is offering. Perhaps another network would recognize GL’s vast popularity and give it a chance in a more viable time slot. Not only other soaps, but most other dramas in general on the tube cannot compare with the great quality of acting, finely wrought, emotionally-charged and true to life writing, themes that reflect current real life issues, dedication to honoring life’s call for moral behavior as goal, and it’s rewards in the end. Stupid CBS. You really do not deserve a program as fine as Guiding Light.

  119. I remember my grandmother putting me down for my nap in the afternoons, As I layed in my crib I could hear the intro to Guideing Light. It was like clock work and it is one of my earliest memories. As I grew up I watched it myself even as a little kid by the time I was 9 I new all the storylines and have kept up with them ever since. OK so here is my issue all my life things have changed I have lost friends family so on and so on, The only constent in my life is GL some might say that that is sad but not me. I have alwasy went straight into my comfort zone watching the show all my issues went out the dorr even if it was only for an hour a day it is how things how for me. GL is my family and this will devistate me. Sure its gets a little boring here and there and alot of people do not like the scene changes but, for me it does not matter GL is my family and I am as loyal to them as they have been to me please please figure something out!!!!!

  120. Sorry Matt.
CBS pulled the plug on “Light” this afternoon. Last air date will be September 18, 2009 when their current contract expires.
Like everything else in life there is a beginning and an end. It’s been around for over 70 years so it’s long past its time. There have been rumors about this for a decade so it was only a matter of when and not if. When you only pull in about 2 million viewers daily, you aren’t going to be on tv very long.
    RIP “LIGHT”

  121. This is the worst news ever. I am a fan, although frustrated with some of the story lines I can not imagine GL not being part of my daily routine. I have watched this show since I was young. It was time I shared with my grandmother/mother/sister and we spent time talking about all kinds of things, really while watching it was like family time. Losing GL would be like losing memories of growing up. I really hope this does not happen. Start writing to CBS!!! Please help try and save the show and the memories we have all grown up with.

  122. A replacement? Don’t know how to replace GL? Because there isn’t a replacement for Guiding Light! To those of you who say “get over it”…for those of us who have been watching for most of our lives, it’s like the death of an old friend.
Guiding Light is the only soap I have ever watched, and the only show I watch on CBS. Guess what CBS? I guess our 26 years together is over.

  123. They need to change media, they went from radio, to tv, now the internet might be a better option. I watch online now anyway. 3rd generation viewer, my children would watch. Not a alot of shows like that, not alot of anything like that. ITs really amazing. Someone needs to do something to keep it going, I would listen to it on the radio. All these companies are having problems because they want instant gratification and they think customers should put up with anything. If I have enough bad experiences I do boycott companies. SO if cbs dumps the show probably won’t watch cbs, if someone else picked guiding light up on line I would watch. It is a tried and true product, us fans are loyal, we might only be 2 million but someone aught to be able to make money with that. Our grandmothers, mothers, and daughters not to mention a few husbands, brothers and sons watch. What other show has done that?

  124. Please don’t cancel Guiding Light! I am 46 years old and have been a faithful viewer since I was 10! My mom got me started watching it. My Aunt,Uncle and cousin watch it too. When we talk to eachother we always bring up “The GL” (as we like to call it!) I used to watch all four CBS soaps. I have narrowed it down to only watching GL and ATWT. Please don’t take another one away!

  125. 33 yr viewer…Proctor and Gamble will lose my business and so will CBS. CBS stinks otherwise anyhow. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD BOYCOTT PROCTOR AND GAMBLE UNTIL THEY PUT THE SHOW BACK ON.

  126. The first rural t.v. in Mooresville, N.C. we had. I watched G.L. from the time I was 5 yrs. old. There was Search For Tomorrow, The Edge of Night, As The World Turns ect. The most constant has been The Guiding Light. I have been a fan and so has my children and now–grandchildren. I can’t believe that this wonderful program is being axed after all the years it has brought so much entertainment and light into so many lives. It is still the most watched program. My sister in Fort Lauderdale can’t watch it because it comes on so early down there. I keep her up on the latest. I think that is part of the problem. You have changed the time in certain areas and everyone that used to watch, can’t anymore unless they program it. My sister is 16 yrs. older than me, she doesn’t program. Please do not take this soap away. It is like family. So many characters and loved characters. This is a wonderful show, please don’t take it away. Americans are losing enough already. Please reconsider!

  127. I would hate to see Guiding Light cancelled. I used to listen to it on the radio when I was in school and have watched it on tv since it first went on the air. I’m not crazy about the way the story line has been going lately but the characters feel like family. I hope you find a way to save the show.

  128. I love “Guiding Light” I have watched it for over 50 years. It was on TV only 15 minutes when I started watching. My sister, nieces, daughters and my 89 yr old aunt and uncle watch it. My husband started watching it with me when he was recouperating from back surgery. Now we tape it and watch it during supper. The Bauers,Lewises Spauldings, and Coopers are like a part of our family. I’ve watched through all the marriages, the deaths of papa and Bert Bauer, Henry Chamberlain, and HB. The only time I was disappointed with GL was when they cloned Reva. I will have an empty spot in my life if the GL is canceled.

  129. i think it would be a real shame to cancel the show after so long. i know very well that their all people all over that still enjoy watching gl. i grew up with my mother watching and it has always been a part of my life. i still love watching it everyday. thats all we need is another gameshow or another talk show. like we dont have enough of those already. leave it alone and let us continue to enjoy. love you gl!

  130. I am very upset to learn that Guiding Light has been cancelled. I have been watching it for a long time. I am 53. I work but I record the show and watch it in the evening. I really cannot take another talk show or reality show. TV is not the most important thing in this world but its nice to get away from this world for a little while even if GL is boring sometimes..life is boring sometimes. Whatever takes its place I will not watch. I guess its time for me to turn the tv off.

  131. I have watched guiding light my entire life. It has been the one constant thing. When I was pregnant and on bedrest it was the thing in my day I looked forward to. This year has been hard enough. PLEASE don’t take it off the air. Guiding Light has many loyal fans. The new format is terrific. thanks.

  132. I have been a fan of the Guiding Light forever. I sat in front of the Radio with my Mother when I was 4 years old. And now I’m 66. Take off Dr. Phil. All he does is repeat the same topic day after day. I will miss the Guiding Light, I would never miss Dr. Phil.

  133. I won’t quit watching CBS if they cancell GL. If they think it’s in their best interest, I can understand their decision.
I can say though that I will not be watching CBS during that time slot. I’ll be watching something on cable.

  134. I have never written anything like this ever about a show, that is how much GL means to me. This is a real shame! I have watched guiding light for 30 years. I grew up watching it! My mom, sisters, grandma, we all love it! When I heard that they were cancelling Guiding Light, I was horrified. I work full time, but I have recorded or dvr’d guiding light everyday since I first had a vcr. CBs and PG you make me sick! You have the longest running show that people love and you have no thoughts of what the public wants. Listen to the people. Please reconsider or you will most definetly lose my business. I will no longer watch anything on CBS or buy a product from P & G.
For the record, we do not need another talk show or game show on tv- WE have enough!!

  135. I started watching Guiding Light in the summer of 1987 when my first child was born. The show’s air time and my daughter’s nursing time coincided. It was when Reva Shayne first came to town, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I can’t watch it every day since I work most days, but I try to watch it at least once a week, and keep up with the show via the internet. Sure it’s had its ups and downs – that’s understandable. But the storyline is just starting to get really good again. I’ve finally adjusted to the new format and have been really enjoying the show. Will I watch whatever replaces them in that time slot? No. I typically turn the TV on just to watch GL and then turn it back off. I hope that CBS seriously reconsiders this decision. As it is, I rarely watch TV – this will decrease my viewing time even more. Thank you.

  136. I have been watching GL since I was 11 years old . SO I have been a fan for almost 33 years . Come on people they will take off a show that has been on for 72 years but they keep all these ignorant Reality shows on the air. That is crazy to me. I know it has low ratings but with a little help they can do something to save this wonderful show. PLEASE RECONSIDER!!!!!

  137. The last show date has been set and all of you that are saying you will be boycotting P&G products, watching some other tv show on cable, or not watching any CBS shows anymore are just being plain out insane. Do you not realize how big of companies these are and your actions will not even matter. There are too many other people out there.

  138. How sad! I just want to cry. I began watching it before I was a teenager back in the 80s, but stopped watching it over a decade ago due to life commitments. Still, it’s sad to hear that such a long-running series that dates back from the days of radio is being canceled! It’s mind-boggling to me. There are so many stupid, low-brow shows on the air, and they can’t keep this one? That said, I’ve caught a few glimpses of the newest shows, and I don’t like what they’ve done with it.

  139. I have watched GL probably since the day I was born in 1967. I, too, look forward to watching when I get home from work. I remember running home from school to watch. I will miss the program/. And I will also prey that Gl will find a new home.

  140. I too, am upset GL is being canceled because I grew up with the characters. I would come home from grade school for lunch & watch it with my Mom. When I moved away from home I worked nights & was able to watch it during the day. After I had my family, I would watch it with my daughter. The characters are my extended family. When Riva was going thru cancer treatment the first time, I was battling 4th stage cancer. Her “on target” feelings & reactions mirrored mine. The writers did a terrific job as well as the acting of Riva & support characters. (even though I disagreed with her not telling Josh). & now with the current situation, it’s shows the miracle of treatments & situations & gets it out to the public. Seems like the decision has been made & it’s disheartening that money & advertising means more than jobs & history of story telling. We have enough talk shows & game shows. Guiding Light & As The World Turns are the 2 daytime shows that I DVR now that I’m back at work. & Yes I do watch some of the commercials!! Although I’m probably the minority on that. I hope for a miracle of saving the show. But am afraid money speaks louder than people. GL & staff. I will miss you!!!!

  141. I’ve watched GL since the mid 60′s – taping it when I was at work. It went from being the show I couldn’t miss, to the one where I ran my errands. I strongly agree with the posts that refer to the terrible writing/storyline – borrrring. Something else has bothered me the last year or so, that I haven’t seen mentioned: the demeaning of women on the show recently. I kept feeling – someone in charge – has little respect for women. Ever since Cyrus appeared on the scene and conned so many women with his slimy ways, I’ve been bothered by it. by having so many of the women (Marina, Harley -both cops, businesswoman Alex and several others) become prey to his major thieving ways and still fall for him – portrayed women as weak, and stupid. both those in the show, and those watching. this was the final straw for me in the downfall of a once respected, enticing show; killed by poor writing.

  142. I AM VERY UPSET AND MAD! READING SO MANY STORIES FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE GIVEN SO MUCH OF THEIR TIME WATCHING A SHOW… EVEN WHEN IT WAS NOT AT ITS BEST, AND THE DISREGARD FOR THE MANY FAITHFUL VIEWERS THAT CBS AND P&G ARE SHOWING. I DO HOPE THAT THEY WILL READ MANY OF THESE NOTES BECAUSE I COULD SAY IT ALL AGAIN BUT MANY OF YOU HAVE SAID IT FOR ME… ALL FOR MONEY IS WHAT THEY SHOULD SAY IF THEY WANTED TO SAY THE TRUTH AND WE DON’T CARE REALLY THAT EVEN DURING HARD TIMES ON SO MANY PEOPLE WE ARE TAKING SOMETHING AWAY THAT THEY HAVE COME TO KNOW FOR SO LONG AND ENJOY CHECKING IN ON FRIENDS ON “GL” SOMETIMES MAYBE TO GET AWAY FROM OUR OWN HARD TIMES…WELL SORRY WE ARE NOT MAKING ENOUGH MONEY….THAT’S WHAT THEY REALLY NEED TO SAY THE TRUTH

  143. I am so upset! When my husband called to let me know that CBS was considering cancelling GL, I thought he was playing an April Fool’s joke on me! I have been watching it off and on since I was 7 years old with my mom. Now, I watch it with my kids by recording each episode on DVR. I grew up with the Four Musketeers. I hate to admit this, but it’s a part of my childhood I’m not ready to give up yet. I love the new format. I think it gives it a real-life look; very different from the fakey prop look soaps have. I love the storylines, the core families. Some characters are back that I’ve missed. Please don’t take it off the air. It’s the only show that links me back to my mom, my childhood, and a show that I really enjoy watching now with my kids on the weekends. There is no other soap that is even close to the quality of GL!!

  144. You have got to be kidding about cancelling this show, surely you know the reason Y&R is so successful is because of it’s time slot. Everyone in our breakroom watches The Young and the Restless simply because it is on during lunch. Put it on at 3:00 against Ellen Degeneres and it too will begin to slide. In fact, it has already gone down a couple of points, or so I read in the CBS Soap Opera mag. you know, if you don’t at least attempt to shake up the schedule to try saving the Grand Dam of all soaps, then I will quit watching all CBS soaps. Every night I watch my soaps on my computer instead of the reality prime time crap, and Guiding Light has been in my family since long before I was born, and I am 57! My Mother first started with the radio show then the TV. I grew up watching!

  145. I have been watching GL for as long as I could remember…When Beth, Rick, Phillip & Mindy went to prom..Stopped watching like many others out there when the style changed. Made me dizzy to be honest. felt more like an amateur home video.
Was hoping they would go back to the original form so that I could watch it again..just might save the show.

  146. I can’t belive it, there is no way anyone with even 1/16th of a brain would even consider such a stupid idea, to do away with the best daytime tv that there is.The GUIDING LIGHT is the longest running for several reasons:it reaches all ages I watced it from the time I was at least 7 or 8 any time I was home sick from school or we had off I watched the GUIDING LIGHT. 2.Even men watch it. 3.people of all kinds watch young, old, inbetween, white, black, purple, green, well you get the picture, American, Asian,Mexican,Italian again you should get the picture. So I plead with you don’t continue with the worst descion you could ever make. Those of us who watch an who the heck doesn’t watch feel a very strong conection with the cast we truely LOVE our GUIDING LIGHT. I can rember when Roger held Holly prisoner in some kind of weird place. An what ever happend to Roxy Reva’s sister, she got sent to a mental hospital, she can’t still be there where is she. you finaly bring back Phillip an where the hell is Mr hotstuff ya I mean JOHNATHON an his daughter Sarah. If you do this I wont watch what ever tries take it’s place.
An as for Proctor an Gamble there are many other company’s out there so I won’t bother with theres. I will continue to watch until I die if you will just keep it going.
    Sincerly,
    Valerie Driver
    (A very unhappy viewer)
    Girard PA

  147. I LOVE our GUIDING LIGHT I would be absolutely devastated and heart broken if they cancelled GL. I look forward to comming home in the evenings to watch my show. and like some have said The characters are a part of our extended family we love them even Allen, LOL. I laugh, I cry, I get angry along with them. we love them! And whatever you will be replacing it with I would not be watching it, I dont watch game shows now. PLEASE DON’T TAKE THEM OFF THE AIR!!!!!!! JOSH & REVA “ALWAYS”

  148. What a sad time. I have been watching GL since i was 5 and i’m 32 now. This soap has been a part of my life. I moved to CA 7 years ago and was unable to watch, they don’t carry it on our CBS here. I was able to catch up via the web. Why can’t they track ratings with the web included? How many people out there can watch it live…we all record TV now. Move this soap to another avenue and try something new….i’ll pay a monthly fee to keep watching the longest running soap….there has to be an answer to keep the light shining….

  149. I have watched gl for 50 years faithly and I would be very un happy if GL is cancelled. You can not do this to us gl watchers it is very important to a lot of household…..very sincerely do not cancel guilding light….keep the light shinning..keep the light shinning. sincerely Lou Jones

Does anyone remember how gut-wrenching it was when Holly shot Roger, he faked his death, she was in jail — little Christina cried every time she had to leave from seeing her mommy. Yet when they brought Holly & Roger back, they didn’t even pair her with Ed???? And they ended up writing both Ed and Holly out…… there are a few former Exec Producers I’d LOVE to have 5 minutes with, as well. It sounds like all of us who are upset are educated, professionals who understand the daytime drama industry better than those making the decisions! Frustrating!
I have been so frustrated with all of the writing regimes that decimated such a strong show over the last decade — and P & G or CBS appeared to have sat back and let it happen, always going for a new “gimmick” to get higher ratings. That Reva clone storyline was just plain ridiculous ….they wrote off Michael Tylo and Lisa Brown because of it (check out the Quola website) and the show has never bounced back. I’d LOVE to have just 5 minutes with the powers-that-be — just 5! I’d be in heaven if I could just meet Lisa Brown in person to tell her how much her talent lighted up daytime TV in a way that NO OTHER ACTRESS will ever come even close to achieving!
I know it costs a lot of money to produce daytime dramas….. but the ends will justify the means if they are produced properly! GL needs revamping… it needs to get back to its glory days…NOT CANCELLATION. I wish we could take the top 12 – 20 characters of all time (with the original actors) and put them on the canvas as the contract players…. with engaging real-life storylines that are character driven and not plot drive or budget driven, and see what happens with the ratings between now and Sept. 18?
I really think people who make the decisions rely on “market research” rather than what real people, real viewers, want to see. It’s so frustrating… if the viewers who made the show #1 in the ratings (and Emmy winner of best soap and best writing) were actually polled, I know we’d all say pretty much the same thing. Proctor and Gamble or CBS (I’m not sure who is in charge of this) let the “Revolving Game of Exec. Producers and Headwriters” go on too many times from the late eighties until now. Ellen Wheeler has had somewhat of a vision (with the new taping techniques) but I myself didn’t tune in just because the scenes were shot outside with hand-held cameras. Here’s another piece of info — the Marion Crane storyline someone in the mid 90′s..the male killer who lived as a lady .. ws hailed as a first in daytime TV. I created and wrote a college soap opera 10 years earlier and created that storyline then…….. tried to get into a writers development workshop for soaps inNY, but they weren’t accepting new inexperienced people from outside the industry. The powers that be need to look for writers/producers with “vision”…. who may not be soap opera “writing hoppers” like many of them who go from show to show….. many decimating every show they touch before they’re fired.
I’d LOVE to have 5 minutes with the powers-that-be to discuss this issue in greater detail. There are enough cable networks that would LOVE to have that many viewers for one show. But it will take some grass – roots, pull-up-your-sleeves sweat-equity to make it happen. I think the rewards would be well worth the challenge…. we need to keep the light shining for many more years, we can’t let it just die. I realize TV viewing habits have changed… but people are people… people want to be entertained.. we still watch TV, we still invest in characters. If the powers-that-be will give consumers a product they want, there won’t be any ratings issues! I’ll stop rambling for now… but I still think GL deserves a place on that dial. and I wouldn’t be surprised if current and former cast members would even be willing to take pay cuts to keep the light shining! GL is part of Americana… like apple pie and football. Together, we can keep it shining and make it even brighter!
Coming from someone who created and produced a weekly college soap opera years ago, with budget constraints and the like… and someone who has watched several soaps over the years.. if the GL powers that be would listen to those of us who helped give the show #1 ratings back in the 80′s…who are now raising children who watch TV with us…. there wouldn’t be any ratings issues. Grass roots America needs a voice in these network decisions.. the game of “revolving producers and writers” that GL played for so many years didn’t work.. they needed a solid, cohesive vision.. the foundation laid by Agnes Nixon and Douglas Marland. Creativity with storylines motivated by characters that viewers connect with and entertain … NOT characters thrown in just to make a change or add some spice. That type of action (like the clone storyline) is only a band-aid to the problem…it doesn’t heal the wound completely.
Ratings problems at GL began when previous producers were given too much freedom to decimate the core Bauer and Reardon families. Ed Bauer, Mike Bauer, Nola, and Quint BELONG on that canvas…instead, they were replaced with new families like the mob onethat never had any long-staying power because they had no history with the show. Lisa Brown is one of, it not the best, actress to ever grace daytime TV. I understand the need to create fresh storylines and new engaging characters — but IT DOESN’T ALWAYSWORK! History shows it over and over again… GL had HUGE ratings 10 – 15 years ago. If a small fraction came back with a revamped, back – to – basics show –with 12 – 20 core characters that need to be there (like Nola and even Hope Bauer Spaulding), and if the network promoted the show properly in prime time, viewers would come back. I don’t think the network ever promoted Joan Collins in prime time when she joined as Alexandra Spaulding – prime time viewers would have FLOCKED to watch her!
How does one get a “5 minute audience’ with the powers-that-be at CBS???or P&G????????
    I’d LOVE to know!

  151. Please don’t cancel my “LIGHT”! I have watched it since I was 19. That was in 1969 when it was a 15 minute soap!! I record it on my DVR every day. How many of us out there don’t have a connnection to the Nielsen ratings? How can they say it has low ratings?? Move it to another network but please don’t cancel it. They just brought Phillip back-The Light can keep going for a long time. I also will not watch another soap ever!

  152. yes, first aj you`re way more than a ass! the reason you dont watch the light, is because your to busy butting in on somting that dose not concern you. you`re to busy writting stupid stuff. you know nothing about! go crawl back in the whole you craweld out of. iv watced the ight sence i was 12 im now 43 please dont let it go. im like every one eles i will never watch any thing on cbs again. those who say get over it. you are those peaple who have never loved a show like all of us have. please concider. ps aj get a life. if you answer this, we all know you are a pathetic little person with noting eles to do!

  153. Mark Schreier:
You make some very good points and posted some great info. It’s obvious you are a long time fan of GL and the soap genre.
If you are out there Mark, please contact me:
    BuckE22@gmail.com
I would like to talk soaps & GL history with you.
    Much thanks,
    Bruce Abbott Jr.

  154. I have been watching Guiding Light since I was about 15 years old. (now 37) It is the ONLY Soap I watch and the only one I have ever been able to get into. P&G /CBS has lost their freaking minds! It is the only show I watch on the network.
I just can’t believe they are going to end it like that. Don’t these people know alot of people have DVR’s? VCR’s? Just because many people can’t be home during the day to watch it, that there are millions still watching it. Just not when the show is actually on. This pisses me off. But….sigh…..oh well. Other networks cancel good shows all the time. It all comes down to money….it starts to cost them too much to produce because certain characters require more money to stay with the show once they become really popular.
    Will surely miss it!

  155. I am furious that they are cancelling GL – Sure the stories are not what they used to be, but that is something that could be fixed if the producers cared enough to save the show. Where is the respect for the institution? My great-grandmother watched this show and it has gone down the line. There were years when I couldn’t watch it, but now I watch it online while I am stuffing envelopes at work. Neilson ratings don’t count for those of us who watch it online. P&G have no idea how many people watch this show.
Could they not work with all that history and 70 years of developing characters and families? I think the demise of the show is mostly due to poor decisions with management.
I am contemplating making a list of P&G products that I will no longer purchase, but since they are such a conglomerate, it may be difficult to do.
I like the new format, the stories just need a boost.

  156. I really think CBS has a bunch of ***holes running it anyways, just by what is on in prime time..all the same crap CSI every other night, totally DUMB!
What CBS fails to realize is that Soaps are a traditional part of america, and many many generations,if they used better methods of time scheduleing then GL would have had a better chance.
The tv audience is SICK TO DEATH of Game Shows! we have GSN if we wanna watch a frigin game show!
We also do not need another Talk Show, God knows Oprah has been on way too long!
And the last thing i am gonna do is tune into another Judge Judy piece of garbage!
No CBS and the other two networks need to wake up and go back to basics and the Old Daytime Style, before all your viewers cancel ya’ll!
I also think CBS is pretty dammed low to cancel GL after all the years it has made money for the network..but ike i said before CBS sucks!

  157. Hi, it is sad, this about Guiding Light, sorry to know about it, hope they can save it – I and my mother and siblings grew up with CBS soap operas, and as a child/young person I followed The Edge of Night from CBS to ABC (which was another good show that also changed time slots, and after some years did not survive).
Generally, we always watched the CBS soaps (while I defected at times), and I still watch The Young and the Restless, which manages to hold on to some of its original unique good characters and characteristics, while appealing to various audience groups and creating truly interesting storylines. I have to say that work and life and circumstances have utterly removed me from Guiding Light, which at certain points in my life I did enjoy, as did my mother. And someone back there said it – the timeslot thing is important – I have lost track of exactly when it is shown here, where I live. Not being one of Soapnet’s selected offerings is another minus – that is how I continue to watch Y and R. I guess it is always a combination of numerous things that result in a truly good show having a certain run and then winding down to the end (some that come to mind are, of course, The Edge of Night, Search for Tomorrow, and NBC’s Another World, which was terrific in the early to mid eighties). So sorry, folks.

  158. no no no please don’t cancel it. i don’t get to watch it, but i come online every single day for the recaps. this and bold and beautiful are the only soap operas i watch. please rethink this for the fans sake.

  159. To the person who posted the 40 cancelled soaps. How many of those were on tv for 70 years. I have watched or listened to GL for over 60 years. As a child my Mom, Grandma and I listened to the 15 minute broadcast on radio, then the 15 min. broadcast on tv. It has been part of my life and I will truly miss it if CBS cancels.

  160. I am 3rd generation of watching Guiding Light My Grandmother listened to it on Radio, then TV came I watched it with my parents and siblings. My children have watched it with me. Too many other nasty stuff on other shows just because they are doing it doesn’t mean Quiding light has to do it. You lost my Mom with the Tammy and Jonaton relationship and now with Olivia and Natalia. Guiding Light was one of the last few clean family oriented family shows. That’s the challenge keeeping it clean family values these days I guess Guiding light is giving up.

  161. Even though I do not like the new format on GL, it would be a shame to cancel same after 72 years. I hope the owners can find a new station to air GL.
    Carole

  162. Bring back Dark Shadows!!! If I can’t have my Josh and Reva and my Bill and Lizzie then I want Dark Shadows!

  163. No, No, No!!! Please don’t cancel “The Light”! I have been watching it since the early 70′s when in my teens. During my college years, any classes during the 3-4:00 GL time slot HAD to wait until the next semester at a different time for me to take them, required course or not! Then, during my 3 years of living in Europe in the early 80′s without the ability to watch it, my mother, a long time fan of GL, did me the favor of taking notes each week while she watched it. Then, at the end of each week she’d mail me the synopsis! In a life full of ups and downs, the cast and characters of GL have always been there to enjoy. Don’t tell me it’s the end of a wonderful 35 years!
I’m still hoping this is an AWFUL April Fool’s joke! Hey there producers…It’s almost May…you can let us out of this “joke” now!!!

  164. I have been watching this show since I was a Baby, The characters are FAMILY to Me!! My Mom watches it, My Grandmother watches it. We record it when we have to be away from the show and keep each other informed on the goings on. If this show EVER gets canceled I will HATE television probably forever and never watch CBS again!!! CBS, its not all about ratings, and if so then I would be willing to bet that your ratings will go far lower than what you think they have already.

  165. I work. No DVD. I read updates online and watch on the occaision that I am off from work. I keep up with all the CBS soaps online. Right now GL is my favorite along with B/B. Next week I may not even read much about either one depending on storyline and how much time I have…… Right now I don’t read ATWT unless I have time because it’s a bit lame now.
We KNOW these people you do realize. Even though that may sound odd. I’ve known GL for 38 yrs. I hope it stays. I kind of like the new format by the way.
Oh yes- I read updates on my phone on my break everyday. I read the rest and other info when I get home. Which ever has the best current storyline -I check first. Now it’s GL and B/B. I hope CBS thinks long and hard!
    Sad Gramma

  166. Dont cancell a show with so much history for them & all the viewers. Its one show, even with some shadyness, that hasnt turned to what is practically porn & rediculousness. Also the stars still look Real! Most other soaps have what appear to be walking “Barbie & Ken Dolls”!

  167. I agree with so many of the word from the e mail that has been sent to CBS, do they not read the e mail do they not care of the feelings of the fans. I am sure that they could try to keep GL If they really wanted to. I feel that they need to keep a constant story line like they once had. I do hope that P&G/CBS have a change of heart, I hate not having my favorite soap to watch. and I do speak for my friends and sisters in laws.

  168. I wish CBS can figure a way to keep Guiding Light on the air. I have beeen watching this soap since I was a little girl with my mom and I am now 47 and it is still a great soap and has not been gettig the credit that it deserves. I believe it is because of the time slot.

  169. I hate to see Guiding Light end. I am 60 and have watched for 34 years. They are like family. When I went back to work I have continued to watch DVRing everyday. I even have gotten my husband into it. Hope something can be worked out to keep it going.

  170. Ok i cant beleive cbs can be so damn stupid for taking this show off the air, i agree with all of you that we are sick off game shows, talk shows, guiding light has been apart off cbs for years, and the show has gotten alot better, with the olivia and natalia, story line, i am a huge fan of the show have been for many years, the actors who have dedicaded many years doing this show deserve better as do its fans, it is the longest soap for many reasons, to strip this soap away from us now just isnt right, and Crystal Chappel is one of the best on daytime right now as it is, i love the story line think it is about time for those two lol, to lose the show now will break alot of fans hearts, cbs needs to wake up and listen to its fans if not i will no longer watch the network, that would be big i watch alot i mean alot of cbs shows i will boycot them and never watch them again, nor will i buy any p&g products either. this show deserves more time get new writers do something to save this soap, but what ever you do dont mess with olivias story line. i hope i speak for many loyal fans when i say save the light, and the actors, this soap has some of the best in the soap family, i dont watch any other soap then this one and to lose it like this just isnt right. CBS GET A GRIP DO THE RIGHT THING AND SAVE GUIDING LIGHT, OR LOSE MANY CBS FANS. AND IF FOR SOME REASON YOU CBS PEOPLE DONT KNOW HOW TO READ JUST SHUT UP AND LISTEN. YOU ARE MAKING A BIG BIG MISTAKE. I HOPE IF THIS HAPPENS ANOTHER NETWORK LIKE SOAP NET OR LIFE TIME HAS ENOUGH SINCE TO PICK THIS SHOW UP. CBS NEEDS TO WAKE UP TO SEE THE LIGHT. I WILL FOLLOW GUIDING LIGHT NO MATTER WERE IT LANDS.

  174. DEAR TV WEEK,HI IM TREY BARTHOLOMEW,NICE TO MEET YOU,TODAY I WOULD LIKE TO TALK ABOUT MY FAVORITE SOAP OPERA GUIDING LIGHT.I BEEN HEARING THAT GUIDING LIGHT SOAP OPERA WILL MOST LIKELY BE LEAVING AFTER FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 18TH 2009.MY COMMENT IS I LOVE GUIDING LIGHT AND I WILL SORELY MISS IT.IT WAS THE BEST SOAP OPERA I EVER WATCHED.QUESTION?WHAT CAN BE DONE TO SAVE GUIDING LIGHT?I DONT WANT IT TO GO AWAY,I GUESS ITS A PRETTY SETTLED THING.AM I RIGHT?CBS IS THE STATION THAT AIRS GUIDING LIGHT.PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE MY COMMENTS AND FAQS IF YOU WISH.THANK YOU,PLEASE LET ME HEAR BACK SOON.THANK YOU AGAIN,HAVE A GREAT DAY,
    RESPECTFULLY,
    TREY BARTHOLOMEW,

  175. i dont want it to end guiding light has coveredall different type of everday problems. the actors are marvelous philp ,reva josh billy yenessa mattbuzz lillian rick ed olivia ,etc

  176. If GL does get cancelled , bring back The Edge of Night to the CBS daytime schedule.

  177. I agree about Quinton and Nola. Guiding Light was never the same once they were off the canvas. There have been other characters I’ve enjoyed on Guiding Light since them, but Quinton and Nola were always my favorites and always will be. I feel so sad that Guiding Light is going to end without allowing Michael Tylo to portray Quinton one last time. He and Lisa were a perfect match for each other. I also agree that it’s a shame that Vanessa never mentions her brother. In fact, she and Dinah never mention Henry eather. Where does that come from? If I were Vanessa, I would be thinking about “Daddy” every time I saw little Henry.

  178. welll they need to find a home fast or whoo care if p@g and cbs go under not me they can do better if they THINK”

  179. yes ther is no need to take the show off completely just cut it back to thirty minutes.

  180. I am 60 years old, & since i was 12 yrs old When I came home & ironed my parents’ work clothes to earn $’s.I watche

  181. I have been a Fan of Guiding Light for 56 years. Have watched or listened to the show sitting in my
    Great-Grandmother’s/Grandmother’s lap.
All of my FAMILY has watched Guiding Light and all the Soaps on CBS since I was a little girl. I’m a dedicated fan please do not cancel this program. It takes alot of dedication to stay with a story for 56 years. I have built my life around my soap operas, made sure that my work schedule/daily chores didn’t interfer with my shows. CBS needs to consider the people who are dedicated to watching their Station Faithfully everyday from 9am to 6pm. I have had knocked-down/drag-outfights with my husband/friends over my dedication to SOAP OPERAS. There is so much story left please don’t leave us hanging till the story ends in some way other than the station cancelling it because of ratings or what ever.
We DO NOT WANT TO SEE ANOTHER GAME SHOW,REALITY or TALK SHOW in that spot.
I believe you can see another way out if it is to change the time slots.
    Example:
    9:00 am Price is Right
10:00 am As the World Turns
11:00 am Young and the Restless
    12:00 pm CBS News
    12:30 pm Guiding Light
    1:30 pm Bold & Beautiful
Who knows you it might boost all ratings on all the Shows just that simple.
Let your Fans help you on the decision.Especially the ones that are faithful to watching the soap operas like I do.
Here is a list of Characters on Guiding Light that should let you know how dedicated I am to the show.
    Josh/Reva/Jeffery/Colin
    Shane/Dinah
    Ed/Holly
    Buzz/Cyrus/Frank
    Daisy/James
    Natalia/Frank/Olivia/Emma
    Phillip/Beth/Lizzy/James
    Alan & Alexandra Spaulding
    Remy/Christina
    Jonathan/Sarah/Lizzy/Bill
    Billy/Vanessa/Matt
    Marina/Mallet/Henry/Shane
    Rick/Danny/Michelle
    Marah
    Buzz/Lillian
    Frank/Blake/Natalia
There is alot more story to tell.

  184. guiding light has been watched by my family members since it was on the radio. It is the only soap opera that makes me cry because the charecters feel like family to me. Words can not describe how dissappointed i am in cbs’s terrible decision to end the best soap ever created!!!!!

  218. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  219. Many thanks regarding your page.I genuinely love your web page. Its really informative.Nevertheless I truly want you to post how you put social bookmarking below your post.

  220. iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  221. Okay, some extremely beneficial stuff right here I really like it, I found some surprisingly informative material here concerning the topic

  222. Excellent job.

  223. Think you’re Ready? Terrorism is the effective use of force or assault against individuals or asset in violation from the criminal regulations with the United States for purpose of intimidation, coercion, or ransom. Terrorists usually incorporate threats to:Create fear among the general population.

  224. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  225. The RSS feed on your site wouldn’t work in my browser (Google Chrome) how can I get it to work?
