Discovery Is ‘Doing da Vinci’

Mar 25, 2009  •  Post A Comment

Leonardo da Vinci was one of mankind’s great inventors, dreaming up devices that were years ahead of their time.
A new series on Discovery Channel will take some of Mr. da Vinci’s drawings of military weapons and breathe life into them 500 years later.
“Doing da Vinci” will air Mondays at 10 p.m. beginning April 13.
Discovery says there is no record that any inventions were ever actually created from da Vinci’s designs. The network assembles a team of 21st-century experts who try to create working prototypes from the master’s plans to see if they will actually function, or if some genius ideas are better left in the history books.
Among the weapons the team tries to assemble are an armored tank, a three-story siege ladder, a machine gun and a scythe chariot.
The “Doing da Vinci” team consists of special effects expert and mechanical designer Valek Sykes, HGTV “Curb Appeal” host and carpenter Bill Duggan, designer and puppeteer Jurgen Heimann and mechanical engineer and entrepreneur Alan Bovinett.
In each episode, they work closely with Dr. Jonathan Pevsner, an expert on Leonardo da Vinci, who advises the team and provides insight into history and da Vinci’s intent.
“Doing da Vinci” is produced for Discovery Channel by Pilgrim Films and Television. Craig Piligian and Rob Katz are executive producers for Pilgrim; Tim Pastore is executive producer for Discovery.

  1. Why isn’t Flash Hopkins credited with the cast?

  2. Very cool! to see this man’s wizardry come alive – the process, the challenges and the actual working of his ideas. The guys are a fine and varied lot; hats off to Flash for keeping the edge.

  3. hi tony..im an old friend of michaels..aka flash.

  4. Hey Missy, I’ll see Flash this weekend, Should I just say Missy? From?

  5. I love the idea of this show. Seeing the machines that DaVinci designed made actual and real is golden; the show’s cast is more of a cheap bronze.
More time is spent on the dumb rivalries between the carpenter and the CG designer than I care to see. I don’t think anyone who’s ever been able to hold down a job for more than two weeks would act so retarded as the cast here. Every 60 minute episode so far has devoted 40 minutes to the manufactured drama on the build team and 10 minutes to the exploration of historical and real COOLNESS of DaVinci’s mind. The other ten minutes are for hawking wares that drive a TV shows income.
The focus of this show should be on the 600 year old designs that reminisce of present day technology; instead the producers have decided to turn this into yet another gag-reflex inducing, cheap reality tv show.
