CBS Will Turn Off ‘Light’ in September

Apr 1, 2009  •  Post A Comment

After 72 years and nearly 16,000 episodes, “Guiding Light” will end its network run on Friday, Sept. 18, CBS announced Wednesday.
The show’s death on CBS had become apparent after word emerged that the network was actively deciding on its replacement, as TelevisionWeek reported exclusively Sunday.
“Light” is the lowest-rated of the eight network soaps still on the air. Its ratings have fallen 25% in the past year following a radical change in production model designed to make the series more cost-effective.
Procter & Gamble, which produces the show, is not giving up on “Light,” however. The company said it will explore other possibilities for keeping the show alive. An online version and a cable network are both possibilities.
“We are working hard to find the show a new home, and we are exploring all our options to continue to bring loyal fans the characters and stories they love,” said Brian T. Cahill, senior VP and managing director of TeleNext Media, the P&G unit that produces “Light” and “As the World Turns.”
CBS executives, however, are moving on and the network is actively considering several possible replacements.
In the meantime, CBS brass paid tribute to “Light” with kind words.
“‘Guiding Light’ has achieved a piece of television history that will never be matched; it has crossed mediums, adapted its stories to decades of social change and woven its way through generations of audiences like no other,” said Nancy Tellem, president, CBS Paramount Network Television Entertainment Group. “This daytime icon will always be an indelible part of CBS’ history, with a legacy of innovation and reputation for quality and excellence at every step of the way. While its presence will be missed, its contributions will always be celebrated and never be forgotten.”
Barbara Bloom, head of daytime for CBS, added, “No show in daytime or primetime, or any time, has touched so many millions of viewers across so many years.”
In the end, however, the financials for “Light” just didn’t make sense for CBS. Despite being much cheaper to produce than several other high-profile soaps, the license fee for a scripted drama is still much higher than for a game show or talk show—the two most likely candidates to replace “Light.”
Given the viewer erosion for all daytime dramas, as well as the tough economy, CBS executives were hard-pressed to justify continuing the show, despite the strong pull of tradition at the network.
“Light” began life on Jan. 25, 1937, as an NBC radio serial called “The Guiding Light.” It moved to TV—and CBS—on June 30, 1952, airing on both radio and TV until 1956, when the radio broadcast ceased.
The series, set in the fictional town of Springfield, was created by Irna Phillips. It has been awarded 69 Daytime Emmys.
Ellen Wheeler, executive producer of “Light,” said it will be tough to call it quits at CBS.
“Being on the air for more than seven decades is truly remarkable, and it will be difficult for all of us at the show to say goodbye,” Ms. Wheeler said. “I’m proud of everything we’ve been able to do, including outstanding storytelling, our community service around the country with Find Your Light and the launch of our new production model. This show has such a rich history, wonderful fans, and I’m honored to have been a part of the ‘GL’ legacy.”

  1. Well I guess it’s CBS who all you people will have to boycott – not that I understand not watching other TV shows you enjoy… Keep on buying Tide, Charmin & Bounty – P&G wants to keep it on the air. Though it probably won’t happen. Good luck though – it is always nice to find alternative ways for a show with loyal fans to continue (i.e. Friday Night Lights on Directv)

  2. It’s like the networks WANT the soap genre to fail and have been doing whatever they can story-wise/casting-wise to kill the soaps for the past five or six years. I’m surprised that they’ve lasted this long (a testament to the tenacity of the fans, that we’ll watch any old poo put in front of us). I’d rather that they hadn’t ruined a lot of characters on a lot of shows along the way and just cancelled them a few years ago… watching these shows die a slow death is like watching your favorite uncle lose his memory. It’s still ‘him’ but it’s not.
In any event, RIP scripted television.

  3. Boo to CBS! Please, please NO more talk shows!

  4. I agree..BOO CBS. I have followed GL for over 30 years when my grandmother watched. I listen to it at work & then come home & watch it. This is another spot for a another dumb talk show to go. CBS will end up like ABC & NBC with no soaps left. This is so sad. Please find a way to keep it on even if you cut it back to 30 minutes.

  5. I am not surprised – I “loved” Guiding Light until they changed they way it was being recorded – and stopped watching, as I am sure many people did. What a shame for all of those actors.

  6. Oh my gosh! I have watched this show for over 50 yrs!! I love it! BOO CBS!!!

  7. Oh, well.
More tone-deaf programming decisions from the woman who killed “Moonlight” six months before a monster breakout genre movie hit theaters.
OTOH, this is a business, we’re talking about, folks.

  8. CBS should also do the right thing and fire Barbara Bloom. As head of CBS daytime she needs to take responsibility for the death of this 70-plus icon. It died on her watch and if I did my job as horribly as she did, I’d be unemployed long ago.
Congratulations CBS!!!! Thanks for screwing your loyal viewers once again!!

  9. I stopped watching 10 years ago, but when I read the news about the cancelation I was deeply sadden. I feel for the cast and crew. CBS has made a huge mistake and they will suffer really bad.

  10. Congratulations Les Moonves, Nina Tassler and Barbara Bloom, you just helped me kick my 25 year CBS daytime habit. As of today I dumped Y&R, B&B and ATWT. On Sept. 18th at 11am WCBS will cease to exist on the televisions in my household. Way to go.

  11. My husband came to bed last night and told me CBS is saying goodbye to Guiding Light – I thought it was an April Fools joke. I had a hard time getting back to bed. I started watching Guiding Light with my dad when I was 9 years old and I’ve been watching it ever since – I’m now 32. Because it’s on at 9:00 in the morning and I work full time, I tape it every day. It’s my cup of coffee at the end of the day, once I put my daughter to bed. I love the show and I’m very upset that CBS has to let it go. I wish there is something that could be done.

  12. This is a huge mistake! I have watched Guiding Light for 20 years and I am 25. Something needs to be done about this, actually something should have been done a while ago. CBS allowed this show to be run into the ground. Its not fair to the cast.. like Kim Zimmer, and the loyal fans, that have watched this show every single day for years. Get rid of the writers, go back to the old way of recording, and listen to what the viewers are saying. There has to be sometihng that can be done. This is very disturbing to many fans, I am so sure. It was the longest running show for a reason. Get it together CBS! Quickly! If they dont find a way to save this show, I pray that Kim Z goes to Y&R, they dont seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. The writers should get a clue from them. This is just terrible. It really is.

  13. To CBS:
I am shocked and dismayed to learn that CBS is cancelling Guiding Light. I, like many others, have faithfully watched Guiding Light for many years. Now I will no longer be watching CBS at all. Guiding Light is not just a mere soap opera, it is an institution that has existed for 72 years…and now it is being canceled due to corporate greed. With all that has been happening of late, have you all learned nothing about what greed can do? Greed has led to the demise of financial institutions, car manufacturers, banks. What has happened to goodwill in this great country of ours? Sure, Guiding Light is not a ratings superstar, however its viewers are loyal. There is nothing like a soap opera fan. You rely on the ratings system, but the rating system as you know is antiquated at best. The majority of soap viewers are women, and most of the women work outside of the home. Even with working we still watch our soaps on a daily basis thanks to vcr’s, dvr’s and the internet. We care about the stories. We are invested in the characters as they have become extended members of our family. We allow them into our homes 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year. What other genre allows that? And what will you put on in its place? Another talk show, another game show? Please…who will even bother taping that to watch when they come home from work? I implore you to reconsider your decision. Not only are Guiding Light fans upset, but soaps fans across the board are upset with this announcement. Instead of being the network with the eye, why not try doing something novel and be the network with the heart.

  14. I’m very upset with CBS. These rating they talk about are a big forest. I’ve been watching Guiding Light since I was 4 yrs. old with my MOM. I’m 60 yrs old and I have never missed one show. Barbara Bloom should be fired alone with all the others. There is many People over the age of 49 yrs old who watch Guiding Light. We do not want a talk show or a game show. I’ll tell you right now all the Big Wigs have just destroy CBS. Thank twice, before canceling Guiding Light. I for one will never watch CBS day or evening. Let the Light shine. The many devote fans are behind the Light.

  15. I know I’m part of a HUGE fan base that is heartsick learning of the cancellation of the finest show ever on TV : GUIDING LIGHT. 72 years!Come on, people! What really makes me sick is the loss of my “extended family”: the superior cast of GL led by Bradley Cole & Kim Zimmer. I know they are all close & am sure this news is devastating to them as well. I not only love & admire their GL characters, but enjoy so much the personal side of their lives they share through their fan clubs, personal appearances, concerts, etc. Having met Bradley Cole at one of his concerts, I know 1st hand what a true gentleman he is as well as a superb musical talent. And then his acting just blows me away! I pray that this painful decision can and will be reversed to save this truly legendary show & it’s cast!

  16. I am devastated that Guiding Light is leaving as of September 18. If they replaced it with another designing show, talk show or game show then they will lose more viewers then they already have. I tape guiding light everyday in my area because it is on in my area at 7:00 am. I can’t believe that they would pull such an amazing soap like this off the air, I am still stunned, lets just hope they come to their senses before September. I know one thing, I will not be watching CBS anymore once they pull my favourite soap. I feel terrible for the actors too.

  17. OMGOSH! NOW WAY ! GUIDING LIGHT IS COMMING TO AN END! I KNOW THAT ITS JUST A SOAP BUT IT IS SO MUCH MORE TO MANY OF US! ESCAPE FROM THE REAL WORLD AROUND US..IT WILL BE A SAD SAD DAY LIKE LOSING A WHOLE FAMILY! GOD BLESS ALL THE ACTORS.FOR ALL THE GREAT YEARS! WISHING THERE WAS ANOTHER WAY FOR IT TO KEEP ON GOING..

  18. CBS! Bad Ratings??? Are you kidding me. Did you ever stop to think that maybe millions are still watching by taping it and watching it at night and it doesn’t show on your stupid ratings? Some of us have to work. This will truely be like having 30 deaths in the family all at once! I’m heartbroken!

  19. Finally, finally, finally CBS cuts back on the dopey soap operas. It’s about time. In Fact, it’s Way PAST time that CBS came in the 21st century and stopped being stuck in 1925. Great decision to dump the soap.

  20. Nice one CBS! Do you ever learn? GL was a shining star in the world of TV and now we have to say good-bye. I’m still pissed at how you literally ruined Knots Landing when you fired the incredible
Constance McCashin (Laura Avery Summer). What are you going to screw up next?-hopefully not the Luke-Noah storyline on ATWT!

  21. well, since they can’t seem to figure out how to do the show well, i’m just as happy to see it go. i started watching when jonathan was on and thought it was my favorite but it sure did die along with some characters like Gus. the writers have them doing the stupidest things!! they’re just dumb. like all these people WALK all over town and through the park all the time. the Spauldings would WALK??? dinah is about the dumbest one of all. can’t stand her. buzz is always falling down like some kind of drunk. and i personally don’t think reva is all that! lizzy is just some little pint sized bleached blond who didn’t eat her wonder bread. was so happy to see greasy grady off the show! and harley. i sure hope NONE of these people go over to Y&R. that’s my favorite. they could go to B&B. that’s a waste of time show anyway! all they do is repeat the same conversation over and over with everyone on the show. i just tape everything that’s on all day and at night if there isn’t anything but detective shows on, i watch the SOAPS. i watch Y&R all the time tho! good riddance to guiding light!

  22. Guiding light sealed their fate when they switched the recording format. It looks like a cheap porn! I stopped watching it then after 20 years of watching it and never looked back! Good riddens GL

  23. First of all i would like to say that i am deeply sadden of the changes that CBS has made. Now for many years this show has been on the air it has change people lives in a way that dealing with everyday problems this is a stress reliver for alot of people and the enjoyment that it brings and the lessons and the message the this show bring to the fans are encreditable. So making a decsion to take the show off due to money issues i don’t think that is right at this time because everything that is going on now the fan just don’t need this. We already have to sacrafice our homes jobs our way of life so please i beg of you don’t take away something that mean so much to us please.

  24. It is my understanding that many shows are canceling due to the licensing fees between the companies that produce them and the studios. I can understand the dire economic times have made people make dire decisions. I also agree that changing the formatting from a nice, polished setting to something that looks akin to someone producing a show from their basement has likely killed Guiding Light.
That said, however, I have tried my very best to work through the crummy production changes to at least support the actors who I’ve grown up with through the years, having watched since I was 5 years old, until now – almost 30 years. This is a show that I have watched with my mother habitually until the day she died, and I really connected with the Reva cancer scenario given my own mother died from a variety of cancer. Its stories and plots like those, and the fantastic acting from such familiar faces.
I was glad to be a part of the Find Your Light charity volunteering, and have the opportunity to rub elbows and get dirty with several of the actors while sorting Christmas toys for needy kids (of which I have many pictures). I found that both exciting and refreshing, to be able to view them as every day people, rather than just faces on the screen.
If P&G cannot find them a new home, as I sincerely I hope they will, the show and the people will be greatly missed, and I can only hope that other networks and shows take them in as lovingly as they took in various actors from other dying shows throughout the years.

  26. Well way 2 go CBS! What the heck are yall doin up there? The Price is Right is already screwed wit that idiot host and no ya pullin the plug on GL. Now I see why I stopped watching CBS all together.

  27. I really hope you find another network to keep the show going. Do they ever consider how many people tape or tivo the show? That’s what I do and watch it at night. I just love this soap and will be really sad to see it go. I do think they made a lot of changes and they killed the ratings for the show. It was great. I do understand trying to save with this economy. Please, really try to save this soap.

  28. Shame on CBS…Good for P&G for trying to keep Guiding Light alive. I love this soap, the actors seem to have so much fun. Can’t believe it lost 25%of audiance this past year. Noone polled me!

  29. I can’t believe that guiding light is being let go . Wow, i use to watch this with my grandmother….

  30. i’ve watched the guilding light for years it a part of my life . i could think of other shows to cancel. I tape this off and watch it after work. no game show will take its place . i will change stations .

  31. I literally grew up with Guiding Light – we’re both 72! My mother listened to the show on radio, then we switched to TV. I can remember rushing home from school for lunch so as not to miss an episode. I can’t believe CBS is canceling the best soap on TV (and the only one I watch)! I’m sure I’m not the only viewer who is sad, and also disappointed in CBS.

  32. It’s very very sad to see such a loved show go. CBS should be ashamed. Talk shows and game shows are a drag. Guiding Light offered a major relief from this kind of thing. I really hope they find another station to sponsor the show soon. It will be truly missed by many people. Please reconsider!! Have a vote to see just how many people truly like the show, like American Idol or something.

  34. THIS IS MY MOST FAVORITE CBS SOAP. i CAN NOT BELEIVE YOU ARE NOT GOING TO AIR IT ANY MORE. I HOPE JEFFREY GETS HOME AND THAT FRANK KNOWS HE HAS A BABY. I WANT DIANA AND SHANE TO REUNITE. I HOPE THE ONE THAT SENT DIANA OFF GETS WHAT IS COMING TO HIM. IF IT WAS ANY ONE ELSE HE WOULD NOT HAVE LET THEM LEAVE. EDMOND I HOPE DIES AND REALLY DIES THIS TIME.

  35. I have been watching guiding light for at 30 years and I am very sad that it going off the air I want to cry. I love all the characters on the show like they are a part of my own family. I will miss you guys. 🙁

  36. I have watched this show since the first tv episode in the 50’s. I rarely have missed one. I’m now 73 years old and very very saddened by this news that GL is not going to be on anymore. I must tell you that it has gotten me through a great deal, and it has been the high point of my day for all this time. I love all the people on the show as if I know them. PLEASE don’t let the fans be out of touch. I really am sincere. It takes me back to my own grandmother and that is how she raised us to be ladies. She would say “now, look at that hussy; or Now, look at that nice girl.” I was schooled on those words and turned out pretty great myself. Love Reva and all her adventures. Please don’t fail to tell the fans where these people will go next. Thank you for a very wonderful timespan each and every day for a teenager through age 73.

  37. I have been a faithful viewer of Guiding Light since 1988. I watched the show mainly by video tapping it and watching it in the early evening during dinner. I will really miss the show as it is probably my favorite soap among others. To be classified as a favorite among such others as All My Children and General Hospital is such a heavy feat but I really would call it a favorite right along with those higher rated soaps. I never seen Guiding Light as a low rated show. I light every storyline of the show and felt so bad to hear of its cancellation back in April and now of its last episodes coming up in September. I know the technology that was used in showing the drama was different and more cost effective than other soaps but I still enjoyed it so much. Josh and Reva were always the pivital characters and were so delightful to watch along with characters like Edmund who tried to cause so much havoc in Springfield. The show is so full of actors and actresses that are so talented. The entire cast will be missed. Along with the opening that I like so much. I probably will not watch the replacement show ‘Let’s Make A Deal’ and if I do it will be on a recurring basis. In those 21 years that I watched the show I missed very very few episodes and when I did I caught up by reading tabloids. I will surely miss ‘Guiding Light’ The soap world will never be the same. Thank You Guiding Light for keeping my involved in all those storylines over the last 21 years. From characters like evil charcters like Edmund to other evil characters like the diabolical Roger Thorpe played by the late Michael Zawlow and who can forget the great Annie Duntin. Also the love story of Jonathin and Tammy. I love those characters. I love the character of Tammy she is a gorgeous and wonderful character. GOOD BYE GUIDING LIGHT….

  38. I use to listen to “Guiding Light” as a child, My mother, grandmother and aunt would sit and knit or crochet while listening. When it came to TV I was thrilled to watch it. I am so sad to see it go off the air. I don’t care what the ratings are, when you think of all the STUPID reality shows on I am ready to throw my TV out the window. Who on earth is runing the programing these days. There is nothing worth watching on TV. What A shame!!!!!

  39. What time is it going to be on the air, On the Sept 18, I need to watch the nvery last show to say my good buys.

  40. What time is it going to be on the air, On the Sept 18, I need to watch the nvery last show to say my good buys.

  41. IREALLY WILL MISS GL,IT WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. I’M 62YRS. OLD AND I’VE BEEN WATCHING GL SINCE WHENEVER THEY WERE LIKE FAMILY,HATE TO SEE THEM GO. WASH.DC

  42. I have enjoyed this show for over 30 years. I am truly disappointed with CBS’s decision to cancell the show. I wish the cast many blessings. After September 18, 2009 I will not watch anymore viewings on CBS. The memories I have of the show are great. The memories I had watching this show with my grandma were special. I am officially cancelling CBS from my life.

  43. I can not believe Guilding light has been canceled. Please bring it back. I will turn off cbs for good. So will thosands of others…..

  44. CBS is out of sinc with most all it’s programs anyway. The news is slanted and not current with all the happenings around and the programs are not as good as the other networks. The cable networks are doing the really good shows.

  45. i will really miss gl. ive watch it sence i was 6yrs old ,its like they are a part of my family,u got to turn them on to know what there doing ,what they been up to. i love all of the members there where times i got mad but who dont i hope they find someway to bring it back

  46. you let that dumb bold and beauitful onso tired of brooke and ridge and the light should still be on i turn to nbc at 3:00 now booo to cbs i watched for 50 years

  47. Amen to that! I think Bold has the worst acting on television. It seems they try too hard. Yes the change in the format of taping was a lot of the reason Guiding Light failed, it made me dizzy to watch! It wasn’t that long ago that Guiding Light won the Emmy for best daytime drama. Really now and you let Days of Our Lives outlive that!

  48. Now this phrase challenges people to respond in a relaxed way and with no need of restriction if some of those responses fall within specific parameters. This specific sentence is comprised of a world-wide-web in-joke that will not absolutely fit the subject.

  49. Awesome site…

  55. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  56. I’d been a Teacher in the Horribly Dodgy America University of Iraq… Until the Neocons Dismissed Me!!!!

part of the show. I took it to heart and was so sorry that the show went off the air. The cast were simply marvelous. Perhaps you can have a sequel to the show as so many people always looked forward to watching it day by day.

  80. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
