'Dump Truck' Up the Road for Telepictures

'Blind Date' Team Sets Break-Up Show

The producers of longtime syndication staple "Blind Date" plan to bring a new romance-related reality strip to stations next fall.

David Garfinkle and Jay Renfroe, founders of Renegade 83 Entertainment, have struck a deal with Warner Bros. production arm Telepictures to bring "The Dump Truck" to the small screen. The series would debut in fall 2008 if it's picked up, according to industry sources.

Unlike Renegade's "Blind Date" and "The Fifth Wheel," which featured strangers (often literally) hooking up in front of the cameras, "Dump Truck" will explore the opposite road: The show highlights people dumping a significant other on national television.

The company has a strong track record in relationship strips in syndication. Repeats of "Blind Date" recently were renewed by distributor NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution. The series has been on the air since 1999.

Casting calls for "The Dump Truck" recently circulated in Los Angeles offices for the pilot, and Warner Bros. is expected to talk with stations about the series later this year. The series was looking for people between 18 and 34 who want to end a relationship in a way their partner will never forget.

A spokeswoman for Telepictures said the company did not comment on series in development.

The deal marks another notch for the hot producing team. The company recently inked a deal with CBS for "The Wizard," hosted by Craig Ferguson. The series will tape its pilot Aug. 3; its producers are Mr. Garfinkle and Mr. Renfroe as well as Mr. Ferguson and Tracey Pakosta of Green Mountain West and David Letterman through Worldwide Pants.

"I was always a big fan of 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' but there was never a real purpose for the show," said Mr. Garfinkle, who would not comment on "The Dump Truck." "Jay and I talked and thought that if we were able to create a great idea that took an improvisational show and created a game around it, we would really have something special. We decided to take it to Craig, who is such a talented and funny guy, and he loved it."

Although he would not elaborate on details of "The Wizard," Mr. Garfinkle noted the game's themes would be "relevant to what's going on today, with a lot of pop culture."

The Renegade 83 team also stays busy with "The 4400," on USA Network, and "Answers on the Street," which the company is doing with Yahoo.

"Internet play is a fascinating place to be in and something we will continue to explore as we grow this company," Mr. Garfinkle said.
