Merv Griffin was always so good to me.
I would always have lunch at the Beverly Hilton and knock on his door. He would graciously sit and eat with me, and on one occasion Greg Peck came in and came over to the table. I worked with Greg, and Merv knew him for years. We all chatted and then Greg went to another table. I told Merv if he wanted he could go sit with Greg and I would understand.
He said, "Steve, I'm here having lunch with you. Just because a supposedly bigger star walked into the room doesn't mean I'm going to leave you. I have manners and you are my friend. I'll see Greg later."
Merv always impressed me with his good manners and kindness.
