Akimbo Shifts Focus to Web Site Solutions

Technology company Akimbo has shifted its business strategy and now is positioning itself as a video-on-demand solution for Web sites, the company announced today.

Akimbo now will offer a publishing and ad system to support various online video models such as ad-supported, subscription, download-to-own, download-to-burn, pay-per-minute, gift cards, account credits and other types of transactional services for video.

In addition, Akimbo has struck a deal with MavTV, a digital network that targets men. MavTV will use the new system. Akimbo has landed new funding from investors including Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Zone Ventures.

Akimbo will face competition from established players in this market such as Extend Media, which offers various business models to online content owners.

Akimbo started as a set-top box company that delivered niche video content via broadband to the TV set. That business failed to take off.
