FSN Detroit Lands Three Local Teams for a Decade

Regional sports network FSN Detroit scored the trifecta, inking long-term deals with three of the area's top sports franchises: Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers, the National Basketball Association’s Detroit Pistons and the National Hockey League’s Detroit Red Wings. The arrangement will put the teams on the channel for at least the next decade in an exclusive local carriage deal.

“The size and scope of FSN’s investment in these three teams directly reflects our commitment to this city, this state and its sports fans,” said Greg Hammaren, senior vice president and general manager of FSN Detroit. “These agreements solidify FSN's position as the preeminent sports media outlet in Michigan and a dominant force in local sports.”

Each of the deals will run for at least the next 10 years, although Fox would not detail specifics of the contracts.

For the Tigers, the new agreement begins this season, with all local telecasts produced and aired by FSN Detroit. In 2008, FSN will have up to 152 regular-season games, including 103 airing in high-definition. The Tigers already have a history with the channel, having been on FSN Detroit since 1998, starting with 85 telecasts per season, increasing to a previous high of 134 telecasts last year.

The Pistons’ new agreement will launch next season, with FSN owning rights to all local telecasts for the first time. However, the outlet has shared games in previous seasons, televising up to 40 games since 1997.

The Red Wings’ new deal extends the current deal for the NHL team that began in the 2003-04 season, which made FSN Detroit the exclusive broadcaster of the team's local telecasts.

“A primary factor in FSN’s success is our unique ability to reach millions of fans in every corner of the region, providing the best platform to serve Red Wings, Pistons and Tigers fans,” said Mr. Hammaren.
