NBC Universal’s new Universal Cable Productions, which will develop programming for the company's cable channels and for sale to other networks, will be run by a five-person management team that reports to NBCU cable boss Bonnie Hammer.
The team is made up of co-heads of original programming Mark Stern and Jeff Wachtel, who already work for Ms. Hammer as programming chiefs at Sci Fi and USA Network, respectively; Javier Maynulet, chief financial officer and head of operations; Beth Roberts, head of business affairs; and Jerry DiCanio, head of production.
Developing programming for the NBCU Cable Entertainment division will be Universal Cable Productions’ priority, Ms. Hammer said. It also will develop programming for other cable networks and media platforms, said Ms. Hammer, NBC Universal's president of cable entertainment and Universal Cable Productions.
The new unit has been given a cast-contingent greenlight to go forward on the “Royal Pains” series for USA. It also will produce USA’s “Monk,” “Psych,” “In Plain Sight” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”
The cable studio also is working on projects for Sci Fi, including the back-door pilot “Caprica,” which is a prequel to “Battlestar Galacticta.”
