Sony Pictures Television acquired the rights to carry the granddaddy of all Web shows, “Rocketboom,” in what is reportedly a seven-figure deal.
Under the agreement, Sony Pictures Television will manage the distribution of the Web news show and also carry it on Sony’s Web video site Crackle.com.
“Rocketboom” first rose to fame in 2004 with Amanda Congdon as the host. She departed in 2006 and the show has been fronted by Joanne Colan since then.
The deal raises questions as to whether independent Web series can survive on their own or if they need the backing of a media partner to succeed. The partnership also underscores the hunger that traditional media entities such as Sony have for independent Web content with a built-in audience.
Under the deal, Sony will be exclusively responsible for ad sales for “Rocketboom.”
The daily Web show will run on Crackle.com and also in a Crackle-branded player on the Rocketboom.com site. Sony also will distribute the show to Sony Bravia TVs with Internet connections.
