ABC Family Announces Pair of Pilots

ABC Family said it has greenlighted production of two pilots, “Ruby and the Rockits” and “10 Things I Hate About You.”

“Ruby” is a half-hour multicamera comedy about a former teen idol that has three members of the Cassidy family involved. It is executive produced by Shaun Cassidy, himself a former teen idol, and stars former “Partridge Family” heartthrob David Cassidy and his half-brother Patrick Cassidy from “Smallville.” The pilot is being directed by Ted Wass. In the show, the lead character is quietly raising a family when his brother and former bandmate drops off his daughter Ruby while he goes on tour.

A half-hour, single-camera series, “10 Things” is being directed by Gil Junger, who also directed the film of the same name, and executive produced by Carter Covington of ABC Family’s “Greek.” The show is about very different sisters going to a new high school.

“We’re excited about these pilots and feel they’re perfect additions to our existing slate of programs,” said Kate Juergens, executive VP for original series programming and development at ABC Family. “These shows are headed by talented teams who clearly possess authentic voices which we believe will resonate with our millennial viewers.”

Ugh. Could this pilot order sound the death knell for the superbly-twisted "Middleman," which seemed sadly out of place at ABCFam?

Hope this is better than some of the pilots Shaun did that weren't great as shows like Mountain, Roar & Invasion which seemed to mimic other companies' series already on networks. Didn't David Cassidy put a show on Fox that only lasted like 3 episodes about a guy who wore women's clothes?
