“I want this to be the show of record for health and wellness, and television that you need to make a real impact on your well-being,” Dr. Oz said. “It will be an extension of what I’ve been doing through my ‘YOU’ books and on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show.’ We will be making news and making sense of the news about health topics that matter, and featuring great, emotional stories.”
A cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Oz is a professor of cardiac surgery at Columbia University, and balances that with his careers as a talk show host and author. His expertise is becoming a mark of distinction in itself, attached to several medical specials on Discovery Health, and he has been a contributor to “Larry King Live” as well.
But the “Oprah” pedigree for his daily talk show, which debuts this fall, is fueling an incredibly high expectation of success.
“I’ve been so fortunate to have learned from Oprah Winfrey and worked with the best television team in the business over the past several years as the health expert on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show,’” he said. “To have been invited to share the stage with Oprah has been exhilarating, educational and the experience of a lifetime.”
The medical talk show genre is a wide-open field, with only one other competitor, CBS Television Distribution’s “The Doctors,” produced by fellow “Oprah” alum Phil McGraw’s Stage 29 Productions.
Dr. Oz said his show will stand out through its focus on viewers as they tackle and overcome medical issues.
“I will be right there beside them to support them, encourage them and arm them with the best information and tools possible to better their lives and the lives of their loved ones,” he said. “As a surgeon I can touch one life at a time—but with a show like this, I’m looking forward to touching the lives of millions of people each day.”
