New-media and traditional producers agree that they don’t want to create shows on spec anymore. That’s the word from the ground, as Daisy Whitney reports in this week’s New Media Minute. Distributors and studios such as Break Media, EQAL and Generate, in a sign of the times, say they won’t launch new shows until advertisers are behind them.

If no one creates shows on spec going forward, then the only new online video series in our forseeable future will probably originate from accidental pilots that have gone viral, which will be quite rare.
