Deborah Turness Named President of NBC News

Press release from NBCUniversal News Group:

NEW YORK -- May 20, 2013 -- Deborah Turness, former editor of ITV News, the United Kingdom’s most-watched commercial network news service, has been named President of NBC News. It was announced today by Pat Fili-Krushel, Chairman, NBCUniversal News Group.

Turness joins CNBC President Mark Hoffman and MSNBC President Phil Griffin as part of the NBCUniversal News Group leadership team reporting to Fili-Krushel. She will be based at the NBC News headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and begin her new role on August 5.

As President, Turness will be responsible for all aspects of the NBC News division including the programs “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams,” “Today,” “Meet the Press,” and “Dateline” as well as its news bureaus around the world. She will also oversee all breaking news, investigative and enterprise reporting, along with the division’s digital properties including NBCNews.com. Additionally, she will have oversight of Peacock Productions, an award-winning in-house production company.

“Deborah has built an outstanding reputation as both a journalist and business executive with a proven track record for innovation and collaboration,” said Fili-Krushel. “She is a leader with a global perspective, who is also very familiar with NBC News, having worked closely with us through our partnership with ITN. Her passion for the news business, combined with her creativity and vision, will be a tremendous asset to NBC News, and I’m very pleased to welcome her to the team.”

Said Turness: "It is quite simply the greatest imaginable honor to be named as the next President of NBC News. I am hugely excited by the opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to working with the talented journalists and technicians who make it one of the great global news operations."

As Editor of the ITN-produced ITV News since 2004, Turness has been responsible for overseeing all national news coverage and business operations for the network, ITV News London and the critically acclaimed website and livestream. She has also served as executive producer on ITV’s weekly current affairs show “The Tonight Programme,” as well as numerous documentaries, live specials, UK and US election night coverage and all live Royal event programming.

Additionally, she was the first female editor of network news programming in Great Britain and the youngest editor in ITV News’ history. During her tenure, she has presided over a series of world exclusives including the arrest of the London bombers, the leaked report on the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, breaking news lines on the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal, and Prince William and Kate Middleton’s much-anticipated engagement interview.

Under Turness’ leadership, ITV News has been recognized with some of the industry’s most prestigious awards including an International Emmy, three consecutive BAFTAs for coverage of the earthquakes in Haiti and China and the Cumbria murders, as well as a number of awards for journalistic excellence including the Royal Television Society Programme of the Year for ITV News at Ten. Personal accolades include the Women in Film and Television News and Factual Award.

Corporately, Turness recently played a key role in winning back the Channel 5 News contract, reinstating ITN’s position as news provider for all of the UK’s commercial terrestrial channels. She was also instrumental in the launch of 5 News back in 1997.

She joined ITV News as Deputy Editor in 2002, returning to ITN from Channel 4 where she served as Editor of the morning show “Rise.” Before that, Turness spent 13 years at ITN, joining as a freelancer in Paris while studying for a post-doctorate degree at the University of Bordeaux.

During that time, she worked across foreign, home and planning desks, and also spent four years as the Washington Producer for ITN’s DC-based bureau, overseeing all content from North, South and Latin America, Canada and across the Caribbean. This period of time included President Clinton’s first White House term, the Oklahoma City bombings and the Atlanta Olympics.

A DVD That Smells Like Domino's Pizza

[Wanna add a little heat to your client's next campaign. Check this out! It's from our colleagues at our sibling Crain Communicaitons publication, Advertising Age]

Takeout pizza and a DVD are a natural fit for many. So Domino's Pizza in Brazil decided to combine the two in a campaign via Artplan Sao Paolo.

In partnership with 10 video rental stores in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the brand used rented DVDs as media. About 10 discs each of 10 different new release titles such as Argo, 007, Dread And Dark Knight were stamped with thermal ink and flavored varnish, both sensitive to the heat.

While people were watching the movie, the heat of the DVD player affected the disc. When the movie ended and they ejected the disc, they smelled pizza. They also saw pizza: the discs were printed to look like mini pies, and carried the message: "Did you enjoy the movie? The next one will be even better with a hot and delicious Domino's Pizza."

In this age of streaming video, the idea might seem a bit anachronistic. However, "in Brazil streaming services like Netflix and iTunes are relatively new, and for people with good social conditions," said ArtPlan art director Diogo Barbosa. "Also our broadband connection isn't as fast as that used in the U.S., and because of that we still have video rental stores in your neighborhoods."

ABC, with Nielsen, To Test Measuring Ads in Videos Delivered on Mobile Devices and Tablets

[Today's news is about a major step in getting better measurement from Nielsen. It comes from our colleagues at our sibling Crain publication,  Ad Age]

By Jeanine Poggi
Advertising Age

ABC will begin measuring advertising in videos viewed with mobile and tablet apps during a trial run with Nielsen, the network said at its upfront presentation to ad buyers Tuesday afternoon.

It will be the first test expanding Nielsen's Online Campaign Ratings to mobile, allowing ABC to measure audience demographics and understand the reach and frequency of online campaigns within apps, according to executives. Nielsen's online ratings currently include video viewed on computer and tablet browsers.

The move comes as ABC introduces a Watch ABC app that will allow cable and satellite TV subscribers to stream ABC's live signal to mobile devices, in addition to the sort of on-demand video that has been the mainstay of network TV Everywhere apps until now.

Measurement will be a hot-button topic during upfront negotiations -- when TV networks look to secure commitments for much of their prime-time ad inventory in the upcoming fall season -- especially as advertisers clamor for quality, long-form digital content. While money has been shifting into online content, a lack of recognized universal
measurement methods has undermined the movement.

But viewers are certainly watching. Adam Gerber, VP-sales development and marketing for ABC, said consumption of ABC content via its existing app surged 71% from February 2012 through February of this year.

The test will run through the summer, and Mr. Gerber said it will not change ABC's guarantees for this year's upfront.

ABC earlier this year began using Nielsen's Online Campaign Ratings to provide guarantees to advertisers for video programming distributed both on TV and online. The effort, dubbed ABC Unified, was meant to let advertisers make one buy across all screens and better understand the online audience of an ad campaign using metrics comparable to TV. Although ABC Unified already includes apps, campaigns were being measured by applying the online data, so the new test will give advertisers a more accurate picture, Mr. Gerber said.

Cheryl Idell, exec VP-client solutions at Nielsen, said the company will also look to partner with other networks on expanding online campaign ratings to mobile.#

PBS Fall Season Offers an Array of New Series, Specials and Returning Favorites -- Season Highlights Include Commemoration of President Kennedy, Heritage Specials, PBS Arts and Showcase of Independent Film

Press release from PBS:

ARLINGTON, VA; MAY 9, 2013 -- PBS announced today a fall primetime line-up featuring a strong roster of wide-ranging programs. New highlights of the season include a series of specials commemorating the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s death; programs exploring American heritage from diverse viewpoints; the first PBS Independent Film Showcase; and captivating new dramas. Fall also marks the second PBS Arts Fall Festival, as well as the return (and a premiere) of acclaimed science programs.

PBS pays tribute to President Kennedy on the eve of the 50th anniversary of his assassination with intriguing new takes on the president’s life and death, anchored by “JFK,” a new four-hour, two-part special from AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. A new episode from the science series NOVA, the history-focused SECRETS OF THE DEAD and other specials to be announced complete this special anniversary coverage.

A collection of programs focuses on the diversity of Americans’ ancestries and cultures, including the new unscripted, interactive series GENEALOGY ROADSHOW, which uses history and science to connect participants nationwide to their individual and family histories; LATINO AMERICANS, the first major documentary series for television to chronicle the rich and varied history of Latinos across 500 years; and from executive producer — and Harvard scholar — Henry Louis Gates, Jr. THE AFRICAN AMERICANS: MANY RIVERS TO CROSS, which chronicles the full sweep of black history in the United States.

The arts remain a staple of PBS programming, with the PBS Arts Fall Festival returning for a seven-week run celebrating music and Broadway classics, including NASHVILLE 2.0, a tribute to legendary country stars, a star-studded version of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company and GREAT PERFORMANCES “Barbra Streisand: Back to Brooklyn,” the superstar’s first Brooklyn concert since her childhood years. The PBS Independent Film Showcase airs this fall with documentaries from INDEPENDENT LENS and POV. GREAT PERFORMANCES premieres its ambitious four-part miniseries “The Hollow Crown,” combining Shakespeare’s Richard II, Henry IV (Parts I & II) and Henry V into a single chronological narrative.

PBS continues to stake out Sunday nights with enthralling dramas from MASTERPIECE, including “Foyle’s War, Series VII” for MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! and “The Paradise,” an adaptation of the beloved French novel by Emile Zola.

Science remains strong this fall, delving into how things are made wilder, faster, colder and safer with the new multi-part NOVA series, “Making Stuff With David Pogue,” and the new four-part series RAW TO READY (w.t.), which takes viewers inside factories to learn how basic ingredients are transformed into powerhouse machines.

AMERICAN MASTERS premieres “Billie Jean King” (w.t.), a film about the tennis great on the 40th anniversary of the tennis world’s 1973 Battle of the Sexes and King founding the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), as well as “Jimi Hendrix” (w.t.) with never-before-seen performance footage, photos, drawings and more. In addition to “JFK,” AMERICAN EXPERIENCE premieres “War of the Worlds,” revisiting the infamous radio dramatization on its 75th anniversary.

“It promises to be an exhilarating fall on PBS, with a vast array of attention-grabbing programming designed to entertain, educate and inspire audiences,” said Beth Hoppe, PBS Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming. “Among our many new and returning programs and specials are exceptional programs on President Kennedy, in the 50th year following his assassination, from AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, NOVA and SECRETS OF THE DEAD; comprehensive, specials on American heritage that closely examine the rich cultural tapestry of America; and a vibrant slate of arts programming. 'Bonnie & Clyde' Miniseries to Run Simultaneously on A&E, History and Lifetime -- A&E Networks Announces New Shows, Heads Into Upfront With Restructured Ad Sales Team

By Jeanine Poggi
Advertising Age

A&E Networks will run its upcoming "Bonnie & Clyde" miniseries simultaneously on Lifetime, History and A&E later this year, the company plans to announce Wednesday at its upfront presentation in New York.

The unusual simulcast, which will be pitched to viewers as a "House Party," will allow A&E Networks to combine female-skewing Lifetime viewers with male-skewing History and A&E's broader adult audience -- all the better, the thinking goes, to offer ad buyers larger reach at one time. It is the first such attempt by the company but is likely to be repeated if it works.

"Bonnie & Clyde" is the latest big-budget TV miniseries, where History has been spearheading the genre's return to prominence -- first with "Hatfields & McCoys," whose finale averaged 14.3 million viewers, and then "The Bible," whose finale got 10.3 million viewers. Their success also spawned History's first scripted series, "Vikings," which has been renewed for a second season.

History is now committed to building out its scripted programming, planning two additional miniseries: "Houdini," which will star Adrian Brody, and "Sons of Liberty." It will spin "Hatfields & McCoys," meanwhile, into a reality show.

The A&E network will use the upfront -- part of TV's annual effort to sell ad time in the upcoming season -- to introduce its next scripted drama, "Those Who Kill," which stars Chloe Sevigny as a police detective who tracks down serial killers. The network enters the upfronts following the season finale of "Duck Dynasty," which drew 9.6 million viewers, and the success of its most recent scripted drama, "Bates Motel."

Lifetime will add a scripted series, "Witches of East End," about a family of witches, and "Devious Maids," a new project from Marc Cherry and Eva Longoria airing in June. It is also renewing the reality competition series "Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition" for a second season.

A&E Networks plans to emphasize its broad success, arguing that it accumulates audiences without over-relying on any one program, genre or night, and without any costly sports programming. The company has seen an executive shakeup in recent weeks, with Nancy Dubuc rising to president and CEO, succeeding Abbe Raven, who was named to the newly created role of chairman. The ad sales team has also been ramping up and restructuring, with an emphasis on partnerships and research.

The partnership group, led by David DeSocio, is working to develop custom creative executions in the network's specials, while the research team, led by Michael Greco, is spearheading studies to provide clients with insights into viewers' passions and marketing to men and women.

As A&E Networks focuses on selling content across platforms, the company has also formed a new business development group, headed by Louis Jerome and Susan Webber Gatto. Jim Agius, Amy Baker and Peter Olsen, have also been promoted to oversee advertising on A&E, Lifetime and History, respectively.

"We are not just selling cable TV anymore. ... We need to think of it more broadly than selling TV ratings points," said Mel Berning, president of ad sales, in an interview ahead of the presentation.

USA Network to Market 'Modern Family' Like It's an Original Program -- Rips Page From 'Psych' Playbook to Promote Expensive Acquisition

By Jeanine Poggi
Advertising Age

USA Network is calling all Mofys -- its nickname for rabid "Modern Family" fans it's banking will tune in when reruns of the sitcom premiere in the fall.

Alexandra Shapiro, exec VP-marketing and digital at USA, is promoting the launch with the kind of aggressive marketing plan usually reserved for first-run shows. The 14-week push includes a robust slate of on-air, digital and on-the-ground initiatives.

There's a lot riding on "Modern Family," which the network acquired in 2010 after its freshman season on ABC for a reported $1.4 million per episode. It premieres on USA Sept. 24. It will air five nights per week in prime time and serve as a platform for USA to launch its own original comedies.

The network estimates there's only 8% duplication of its audience and "Modern Family's" on ABC, and Ms. Shapiro said there's a significant opportunity to attract a chunk of the about 10 million people who watch the sitcom on broadcast. There's reason to be encouraged. "The Big Bang Theory" on TBS regularly pulls 3 million viewers in prime time, and during one week in April, seven reruns of "Big Bang" were among the top 40 cable TV shows.

While "Modern Family" has a respectable social presence, it doesn't generate the same buzz as other TV hits of its size, Ms. Shapiro said. This is something she is looking to change.

"There are limitations ... when you only have it on for a half hour a week," she said. "We think there is the opportunity when it comes on USA with the increase in frequency ... that gives us the ability to socially enable and super-charge this in a way you could never do on a broadcast platform."

USA is ripping a page from its "Psych" playbook (whose super fans are "Psychos"). In March, "Psych" allowed viewers to vote on an alternate ending for its 100th episode. The campaign generated 166,000 social mentions and 13 trending hashtags; in comparison, "Modern Family" averaged 43,000 social interactions in 2013, according to Trendrr.

The network will feature Mofys in a series of tell-all spots tentatively called "Mofy Anonymous" or "Mofy Testimonials." It will also embark on a nationwide search for the ultimate modern family.

Every episode will have a second-screen component that includes trivia, polls and custom advertising content, among other features, and during a Sunday night segment titled "Modern Family Live" it will show real-time results from second-screen engagement on-air. Participating accrues points, and those with the most at the end of the night will be featured on-air as the night's super fan.

USA will also tap the reach of its parent, NBCUniversal and Comcast, making the show a marketing priority across the company's portfolio of TV networks and digital platforms. Ms. Shapiro even sees the theme being integrated into NBC's news division, which could tackle themes related to modern families.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Announces the 40th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Award Nominations

Press release from NATAS, May 1, 2013:

New York -- The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) today announced the nominees for the 40th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards.

The Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards recognize outstanding achievement in all fields of daytime television production and are presented to individuals and programs broadcast from 2:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. during the 2012 calendar year. This year’s gala will return to the prestigious Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA and be telecast on the Turner Broadcast Networks, HLN on Sunday evening, June 16, 2013.

The Daytime Entertainment Creative Arts Emmy Awards gala, which honors the crafts behind the many shows that grace the Daytime genre will return to the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles on Friday, June 14, 2013.

“These exciting nominations officially launch the 40th Anniversary of the Daytime Emmy Awards,” said David Michaels, Senior Executive Director, Daytime. “This will be a true celebration of the 40 years of Daytime Television focusing on the past, the present and the future of Daytime. Congratulations to all the nominees!”

This year’s Daytime Entertainment Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to two Game Show genre icons, Monty Hall and Bob Stewart.

“Aside from all of the excitement around our 40th anniversary,” said Malachy Wienges, Chairman, NATAS, “we are honoring two giants in Game Show history. So many of us grew up watching Monty Hall excite us with what was behind Door # 1, #2 or #3 and found ourselves addicted to the challenge and imagination of Bob Stewart’s classic “To Tell the Truth,” “Password” “Pyramid” and others. The high-water mark these two pioneers have made in Daytime television is unparalleled and the entire Emmy Award community stands in appreciation for the immeasurable contribution they have made to the Game Show genre.”

The 40th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards is a presentation of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in cooperation with the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS).

A breakdown of the awards by network, as compiled by the independent accounting firm of Lutz & Carr, LLP, follows.

17th Annual Webby Award Winners Announced -- Winners Include Mars Curiosity Rover, The Verge, Google Maps for iPhone, Charlize Theron, Red Bull Stratos, Humans of New York, HuffPost Live and Songza

Press release from the Webby Awards:

NEW YORK, April 30, 2013 -- Mars Curiosity Rover, The Verge, Google Maps for iPhone, Charlize Theron, Red Bull Stratos, Humans of New York, HuffPost Live, and Songza are just some of the Webby winners that will be saluted alongside special achievement honorees Frank Ocean, Jerry Seinfeld, Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti, the Obama for America 2012, Grimes, Burning Love and GIF inventor Steve Wilhite at the 17th Annual Webby Awards, organizers announced today.

Academy judges like Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone, Arianna Huffington and Instagram creator Kevin Systrom, selected The Webby Award Winners while Internet voters around the world chose the Winners of The Webby People's Voice Awards, setting a Webby Awards record with votes from over 200 countries and territories.

The star-studded ceremony will be available to view on-demand in HD at watch.webbyawards.com beginning at 9 a.m. ET on May 22rd, 2013. This year's ceremony will be hosted by critically acclaimed stand-up comedian, writer and actor Patton Oswalt.

Organizers also announced a set of outstanding individuals and breakout achievements that will be recognized with Webby Special Achievement Awards. Joining the ranks of Al Gore, Prince, Sir Tim Berners Lee and Bjork, they are:

Webby Special Achievement: Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti will be honored for their role in creating and producing Netflix's groundbreaking series, House of Cards. The widely acclaimed series was Netflix's first major original program, and its first season success has been heralded as a watershed moment for the entertainment powerhouse.

Webby Person of the Year: Frank Ocean, the R&B music artist, will be honored for proving the power of the Web as a medium for cultural change when he published his letter "thank you's" to his Tumblr. By challenging stereotypes historically engrained in the hip-hop and R&B music communities, Ocean brought a conversation about discrimination to the national dialogue. The launch of his debut album Channel Orange in parallel with the statement was a historic moment for both the music and social media industries, and for popular culture as a whole.

Outstanding Comedic Performance: Jerry Seinfeld will be honored for his performance in the hit Web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. The 10-episode series, which chronicles the conversations between Seinfeld and his comedian friends, including Ricky Gervais, Alec Baldwin, and Larry David, demonstrated the continued merging of Hollywood-style entertainment with the Internet.

Webby Breakout of the Year: Obama for America 2012 and its tech team's historic effort masterfully combined savvy political and tech genius to become the secret weapon behind Obama's commanding reelection. Most significantly, the team's unique understanding of the power of big data ensured a real-time analysis of American voters that enabled the campaign to more efficiently read and target voters than ever before.

Webby Artist of the Year: Grimes will be honored for a deep understanding of the Internet as not only a distribution platform for her music and art, but as a social tool to connect with fans through candid, meaningful dialogue. In 2012, on the strength of her breakthrough album Visions, she was on myriad "best of" lists and topped The Hype Machine's increasingly influential 'Most Blogged Artists' list.

Webby Special Achievement: Burning Love and its team including Ben Stiller, Ken Marino, and Erica Oyama will all be recognized with a Webby Special Achievement Award at this year?s Webbys. By successfully challenging the standards of network television with regard to both production quality and distribution, Burning Love has set a new benchmark for quality content on the Web.

Webby Athlete of the Year: Chris Kluwe, punter for the NFL's Minnesota Vikings, will be honored for his online activism, including essays, online debates and tweets, against the proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. His open letter to Maryland state assembly delegate Emmett Burns via sports website Deadspin was a candid, compelling, and opinionated voice among contemporary athletes who often elect to stay out of controversial conversations.

Webby Lifetime Achievement: Steve Wilhite's two-decades old invention, the GIF file format, has proven to be one of the most durable and enabling achievements in modern computing history. Despite developments in moving image and animation technology on the Web, the GIF remains a staple among image formats used to spread news and information and is a key enabler of NetArt, memes and pop culture trends across the globe.

The entertainment industry's biggest names continued to use the Internet to produce some of their best work.

Justin Bieber won the People's Voice Award for "Girlfriend" Fragrance Launch in the Social Media Campaigns

Rainn Wilson's Soulpancake won two People's Voice Awards for Best Variety and Best Variety (Channel) in Online Film & Video category
