HLN and Twitter Form Strategic Alliance to Create an All-Screen Experience for News

HLN, which rebranded itself earlier this year as the first TV home for the social media generation (millennials and the millennial-minded), has formed a strategic partnership with Twitter, it was announced by Albie Hecht, executive vice president and general manager, HLN and Vivian Schiller, head of news, Twitter.

The partnership will include collaboration between HLN and Twitter on several projects, including piloting an innovative program to visualize Twitter data live on air in new and compelling ways. The teams will work together to broadcast live visualizations of Twitter data simultaneously across television and digital platforms. During 2014, HLN will use Twitter to power trending segments on Morning Express with Robin Meade.

The HLN and Twitter teams are also working on a Tweet DVR. This save-for-later feature will capture the best live Tweets from television premieres and play them alongside digital video and TV replays of the same program. HLN will unveil this Twitter-enhanced video experience in 2014.

Additionally, HLN and Twitter will combine the strengths of each partner to uncover the issues that matter most to people and get them to the polls for the mid-term elections while creating new sponsorship opportunities across TV, digital and social media. The #TweetTheVote will include special analysis of ‘outside the beltway’ tweets, and a Twitter powered get-out-the-vote effort on TV.

HLN is also joining the Twitter Amplify program, which allows the network to promote its sponsored video clips on Twitter, injecting news clips fresh from broadcast into the conversation on Twitter with cross-platform branding.

“Twitter is at the center of the social circle of what’s trending, topical and talked about,” said @AlbieHechtHLN. “As HLN becomes the TV hub of social media newsgathering, collaborating with Twitter will provide us the tools to further be a part of, and report on, the conversation.”

CBS Announces Stephen Colbert as the Next Host of 'The Late Show'

The CBS Television Network today announced that Stephen Colbert, the host, writer and executive producer of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning “The Colbert Report,” will succeed David Letterman as the host of THE LATE SHOW, effective when Mr. Letterman retires from the broadcast. The five-year agreement between CBS and Colbert was announced by Leslie Moonves, President and CEO, CBS Corporation, and Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment.

Letterman, the legendary, critically acclaimed host of the CBS late night series for 21 years, announced his retirement on his April 3 broadcast. Colbert’s premiere date as host of THE LATE SHOW will be announced after Mr. Lettermen determines a timetable for his final broadcasts in 2015.

Specific creative elements, as well as the producers and the location for the Colbert-hosted LATE SHOW, will be determined and announced at a later date.

“Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television,” said Moonves. “David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.”

“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career,” said Colbert. “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead.”

Since its launch on Comedy Central in 2005, “The Colbert Report” has received widespread critical acclaim while earning two Peabody Awards and 27 Emmy nominations, including an Emmy win for Outstanding Variety Series (2013) and three Emmy wins for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program (2013, 2010, 2008). Prior to that, Colbert spent eight years as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” as an on-air personality and writer of news satire for the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning series.

In addition, Colbert is an accomplished author, with two books, I AM AMERICA (and So Can You!) and AMERICA AGAIN: Re-Becoming the Greatness We Never Weren’t, appearing on the New York Times best-seller list. AMERICA AGAIN also won a Grammy Award for Spoken Word (2014).

In music, Colbert’s original holiday musical special on Comedy Central, “A Colbert Christmas,” won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album (2009) and Emmy nominations for Art Direction, Picture Editing and Original Music and Lyrics. In April 2011, Colbert starred as Harry in the New York Philharmonic presentation of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.”

After graduating from Northwestern University, Colbert was a member of Chicago’s acclaimed Second City improv troupe with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello. The trio later created and starred in the CableAce-nominated sketch comedy series, “Exit 57,” and created the cult-hit narrative series “Strangers with Candy,” both for Comedy Central.

Colbert has appeared on series such as HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and NBC’s “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” He was also a cast member and writer on ABC’s “The Dana Carvey Show,” wrote for “Saturday Night Live” and voiced roles in DreamWorks’ animated films “Mr. Peabody and Sherman” and “Monsters vs. Aliens.”

HLN Announces Nightly News Program 'The Daily Share' and Unveils Second Development Slate Under New Brand at 2014-15 Upfront

HLN dives further into a social media filter with a wide-ranging mix of programs in development to be announced by Albie Hecht, executive vice president and general manager, HLN, at today’s CNN Worldwide Upfront presentation in New York City.

Rebranded earlier this year as the first TV home for the social media generation (millennials and the millennial-minded), HLN has unveiled a nightly news show and ordered presentation reels within a broad spectrum of non-fiction programming including, a humorous look at the news, personality-driven programs, game/competition shows, and a late-night comedy talk/video/sketch offering.

“HLN has collaborated with some truly creative minds both internally and externally to build a programming slate designed to heighten the all screen experience -- TV, digital and social,” said @AlbieHechtHLN.

The Daily Share will be a one-hour news and information show from HLN’s new studio in Atlanta. The show will provide a digest of what people are watching, searching, playing, sharing, shopping and creating in every aspect of their social media lives. The nightly program will be produced by HLN. Airdate and host(s) to be announced.

Following are the development slate projects to be announced during HLN’s 2014-15 Upfront presentation (all working titles):

-- 2 Spouses, 3 Houses -- YouTube star Jessica Edwards (@JRiffleEdwards) looks at a couples’ social media ‘likes, hearts and pins’ to help her find three choices for their dream home; one perfect for one, one for the other, and one she thinks they both will ‘like.’ Created by Red Arrow Industries, the team behind the HGTV version of the hit series Love It or List It.

-- America's Most Liked -- Now there’s a game show that can take someone from Internet nobody to web superstar. One just has to use their special or unusual talents to compete in viral challenges and try to get the most “likes” from the all screens audience. Created by David Sidebotham’s Babyfoot Productions, and Eero Hietala’s Aito Entertainment, and developed by Michael Yudin, My Tupelo Entertainment.

His Life, According to Jim

Here is the obituary actor James Rebhorn wrote for himself, as published by St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jersey City, N.J.:

James Robert Rebhorn was born on Sept. 1, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pa. His mother, Ardell Frances Rebhorn, nee Hoch, loved him very much and supported all his dreams. She taught him the value of good manners and courtesy, and that hospitality is no small thing. His father, James Harry Rebhorn, was no less devoted to him. From him, Jim learned that there is no excuse for poor craftsmanship. A job well done rarely takes more or less time than a job poorly done. They gave him his faith and wisely encouraged him to stay in touch with God.

He is survived by his sister, Janice Barbara Galbraith, of Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was his friend, his confidant, and, more often than either of them would like to admit, his bridge over troubled waters.

He is also survived by his wife, Rebecca Fulton Linn, and his two daughters, Emma Rebecca Rebhorn and Hannah Linn Rebhorn. They anchored his life and gave him the freedom to live it. Without them, always at the center of his being, his life would have been little more than a vapor. Rebecca loved him with all his flaws, and in her the concept of ceaseless love could find no better example.

His children made him immensely proud. Their dedication to improving our species and making the world a better place gave him hope for the future. They deal with grief differently, and they should each manage it as they see fit. He hopes, however, that they will grieve his passing only as long as necessary. They have much good work to do, and they should get busy doing it. Time is flying by. His son-in-law, Ben, also survives him. Jim loved Ben, who was as a son to Jim, especially through these last months.

His aunts Jean, Dorothy and Florence, numerous cousins and their families, and many devoted friends also survive Jim. He loved them all, and he knows they loved him.

Jim received his BA at Wittenberg University and his MFA at Columbia. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Nu Zeta 624, a life-long Lutheran, and a longtime member of both the AMC and ACLU.

Jim was fortunate enough to earn his living doing what he loved. He was a professional actor. His unions were always there for him, and he will remain forever grateful for the benefits he gained as a result of the union struggle. Without his exceptional teachers and the representation of the best agents in the business, he wouldn’t have had much of a career. He was a lucky man in every way.

ABC Announces Its 2014 Summer Schedule

ABC announced its summer lineup, with four new series joining the schedule: “The Astronaut Wives Club” on Thursday, July 24 at 9:00 p.m.; “Bachelor in Paradise” on Monday, August 4 at 8:00 p.m.; “Rising Star” on Sunday, June 22 at 9:00 p.m.; and “The Quest” on Thursday, June 19 at 8:00 p.m.

These series join returning shows “The Bachelorette,” which premieres at a special time, on Monday, May 19 at 9:30 p.m., before moving to its regular time period of 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 26; “Bet On Your Baby” on Saturday, May 31 at 8:00 p.m.; “Extreme Weight Loss” on Tuesday, May 27 at 8:00 p.m.; “Mistresses” on Monday, June 2 at 10:01 p.m.; “Motive” on Wednesday, May 21 at 10:00 p.m.; “NY Med” on Tuesday, June 24 at 10:00 p.m.; “Rookie Blue” on Thursday, July 17 at 10:00 p.m.; and “Wipeout,” which debuts with a special two-hour premiere on Sunday, June 22 at 7:00 p.m., before moving to its regular time period of 8:00 p.m. the following Sunday, June 29.

“THE 2014 BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS” – SUNDAY, MAY 18
“The 2014 Billboard Music Awards” will be broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will showcase this year’s hottest and biggest music stars. Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, touring, streaming and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, VEVO, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music. Last year’s show, “The 2013 Billboard Music Awards,” delivered its biggest numbers in 10 years.

The “2014 Billboard Music Awards” are produced by dick clark productions. Allen Shapiro and Michael Mahan are executive producers, and Larry Klein is producer.

“THE BACHELORETTE” – PREMIERES MONDAY, MAY 19
Andi Dorfman, 26, a beautiful and successful woman, has it all at first glance — her loving family, her great friends, and even her dream job. But she realized there was something missing. So, last September, she put her busy life on hold to try and find love on “The Bachelor.” She thought she had found her match, but in the end it was not meant to be, and Andi walked away from Juan Pablo. Andi will embark on her own journey to find love when she stars in the tenth edition of “The Bachelorette,” on ABC.

“MOTIVE” – PREMIERES WEDNESDAY, MAY 21
“Motive” returns for an exciting second season with gripping new cases featuring more complicated killers and intricate crime scenes. As summer temperatures heat up, everyone’s favorite Big Balls are coming back! Each episode will showcase twenty four daring contestants of all shapes and sizes as they compete in the world’s largest extreme obstacle course, but for the first time ever, winners will be brought together at the end of the season for a “Tournament of Champions,” during which they will compete for the title of Ultimate Wipeout Champion. The season will continue to bring lots of laughter, with new special themed episodes, including a chance to win a date with Jill Wagner, and the return of some of our favorites, such as “Family,” “Exes,” and “Hotties vs. Nerds.” In the end, only one contestant will be victorious and win the title of Wipeout Champion, while everyone else will “wipeout!”

“RISING STAR” – PREMIERES SUNDAY, JUNE 22
ABC’s new reality series “Rising Star” completely reinvents the traditional singing competition as--for the first time ever--the audience has the final say in real time. The show follows a group of aspiring singers as they audition in live performances. During the performances, viewers vote via an App in real time to determine if the singer will advance in the competition. If the voting reaches a certain threshold, the performer moves on, and the performer can see how the voting is going during the performance, so the feedback is immediate and dramatic.

“Rising Star” is from Keshet DCP, the joint venture between Keshet International (KI), the global distribution and production arm of Keshet Media Group, and DC Media, the parent company of dick clark productions (dcp). Keshet DCP was formed to leverage Keshet’s globally successful unscripted business with DC Media’s expansive U.S. infrastructure and production expertise. The singing competition for ABC will mark the company’s first foray into the market since its formation in October. Ken Warwick (“American Idol”) and Nicolle Yaron (“The Voice”) are executive producing.

“NY MED” – PREMIERES TUESDAY, JUNE 24
Fans of ABC’s widely acclaimed real life medical series can take heart. A fresh edition of the multi award-winning “NY Med” will air this summer after nearly two years of production. Expanding their scope, the producers offer a riveting tale of two cities. Each episode in this eight-part series toggles between the renowned surgeons of Manhattan’s New York Presbyterian Hospital and the gritty world of trauma surgeons at Newark’s University Hospital where the ER is a doorway to the mean streets of one of America’s most violent cities. Sometimes poignant and often uproarious, this limited series takes a deep dive into high stakes medicine through the eyes of unforgettable characters, including a hilarious trio of returning ER nurses who must cope with tricky personal crises while caring for some of the nation’s most bossy patients. Mehmet Oz rounds out the character roster with his extraordinary surgical skills on full display as his deft hands work to fix damaged hearts and save lives.

Overnight, these women were transformed from military spouses into American royalty. As their celebrity rose and tragedy began to touch their lives, they rallied together.

“The Astronaut Wives Club” stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Betty Grissom; Odette Annable as Trudy Cooper; Zoe Boyle as Jo Schirra; Azure Parsons as Annie Glenn; Desmond Harrington as Alan Shepherd.

From the creator of “The Bachelor” franchise comes the new summer series, “Bachelor in Paradise.” Some of “The Bachelor’s” biggest stars and villains are back. They all left “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette” with broken hearts, but now they know what it really takes to find love, and on “Bachelor in Paradise” they’ll get a second chance to find their soul mates. Contestants will live together in an isolated romantic paradise and, over the course of six episodes, we’ll follow these former bachelors and bachelorettes as they explore new romantic relationships. America will watch as they fall in love or go through renewed heartbreak.
