Why Ellen Degeneres is a Great Choice For ‘Idol’

Sep 10, 2009

Anyone who is complaining about the decision to add Ellen DeGeneres as the fourth judge on “American Idol” doesn’t understand show business.

It doesn’t matter whether or not Ellen is some kind of expert on singing, though, as an entertainment professional for her entire adult life, she likely knows a lot more about the subject than some are giving her credit for.

Her abilities as a judge of talent have nothing to do with her hiring. She was hired for the simple reason that she happens to be one of the world’s most popular and likable personalities on television. That’s it — you don’t really have to spend too much time analyzing it further.

She’s hugely appealing and at the top of her game. Sure, we’ll all miss kooky Paula, but Ellen DeGeneres? It’s a no-brainer. Whoever did the deal to land this huge star deserves a bonus.

  1. This is all true – AND she’ll be funny, which is an entertaining bonus. Can you imagine the stuff Ellen will come up with when someone HORRIBLE auditions? I may even start watching the show myself!

  2. … and I guess maybe YOU understand show business, Buckman? You are so full of crap. DeGeneres has absolutely no experience in the music business, and her presence will make “Idol” a bigger joke than it is now. Her talk show is too hokey and stupid, and she isn’t funny at all. And just how is this move going to appeal to young audiences? Since you love talking out of your ass, may you can explain to us since you know so much.
Buckman, you are to TV critic writing as “Around the Horn’s” Jay Mariotti is to sportswriting. And that’s NOT a compliment. You were a good writer for EM 20 years ago – but that was 20 years ago. You are just another in a line of moronic idiots in the media who doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

  4. T Dog – I think you are the one who doesn’t know what they are talking about! I think Ellen is an excellent addition to the judging panel! She appeals to audiences of all ages… apparently you’ve never seen her show or you’d know that already. I do not consider myself “old” by any means – I am 27 years old – and I think Ellen is GREAT!
I am so excited that Ellen is the new judge and CAN NOT WAIT to see what this season is going to bring!!
Maybe you should stop talking out of YOUR ass and actually watch the shows you criticize before you criticize them… jackass.

  5. Wow, great comeback. Did you write that one all by yourself? And yeah, I’ve seen her show. I know what I’m talking about. So have fun watching “Idol”, you dumb bitch.

  6. I generally agree, but after his VMA performance I think that Kanye West would be a better choice!

  8. Wow, what kind of professional leaves insulting comments for others who have a different opinion than yourself. Look in the mirror T-Dog, you need a face lift!

  10. T Dog: Maybe you should be a judge when Simon retires. The only problem I see is that they’ll want someone as smart and witty as Simon, not just any old crank off the street.

  11. Agreed. Not an idol watcher. But if America gets to vote, what a great idea to have an entertaining, celebrity “everyman” judge on the panel.

  12. I will admit that AI is getting a little old but I still like it because it is an “easy” watch for us.
