Friday Ratings: ‘Virtuality’ Tanks, Jackson Specials Dominate as Networks Struggle to Find Viewers

Fox’s big budget "Virtuality" will likely remain an unsold pilot after a disastrously low-rated Friday broadcast.

The two-hour movie/backdoor pilot, from one of the creators of "Battlestar Galactica," flatlined Friday with a 0.5 rating/2 share among adults 18-49. Of even more concern: The broadcast kicked off with a 0.7 at 8 p.m and fell to a 0.4 by its final half-hour, indicating those many of those few viewers who decided to check out "Virtuality" weren’t impressed with what they saw (or decided to watch the rest later via DVR).

Overall viewership for "Virtuality" wasn’t any better: About 1.8 million die-hard fans watched.

"Virtuality" flopped on a night where nothing much worked and all the networks struggled to find a pulse.

CBS, for example, failed to rise to a 1.0 demo rating in any hour Friday night– punishment, perhaps, for not rushing on another Michael Jackson or Farrah Fawcett special.

Of course, ABC and NBC didn’t exactly draw record crowds with their E!-like programming.

And yet, NBC won Friday night with a 1.4/5 by repeating "Farrah’s Story" (1.1/5) from 8-10 p.m. and airing a new Jackson-themed "Dateline" (2.0/7) at 10 p.m. The latter hour was, by far, the top-rated show of the night in the demo.

Indeed, NBC’s Jackson edition of "Dateline" doubled the young adult rating of ABC’s Jackson edition of "20/20," which averaged a 1.0/4 from 10-11 p.m.

  1. Virtuality was a let down.
Intriguing ending – but stepping into an airlock un-helmeted, suit un-sealed is the stupidest thing I have ever seen in a sci-fi show.
I want to like it, but what an un-disciplined bunch of idiots for a crew, a crew going on a mission that is supposed to be the biggest deal in human history…
This feels more like cheese ball soap opera disguised in sci-fi CGI.

  2. Pure crap! Couldn’t get past the blatant pushing of the homosexual agenda. Stopped watching about 5 minutes in. Hate having homosexual lifestyle portrayed as normal. Thankfully on TV there are off buttons, and channel change buttons, so I don’t have to allow myself to be inundated with hollywood’s disregard for “good, normal” family values. Leftist, heterophobic crapola. The Captain became enraged by a pair of women’s underwear, how gay is that?
Schwarzenegger did it better in “Total Recall”.

  3. I liked Virtuality. I hope that I am not left hanging as with Sara Connors, and Fire Fly. Fox is notorious for killing fans dreams.

  4. Oh, shut up.

  5. In the future there will be no worries about homosexuality. That conflict, between nature and the imposition of religious beliefs, comes from a construct that is and will continue to lose influence until people like this guy will be marginalized.
Show takes place in the future.
Where he isn’t. Where he probably will never really be, even if he lives that long.
The larger question? Why be a Sci Fi fan if you can’t wrap your mind around such things as progress and the continued unity of the species that we’re all working toward?

  6. Ron Moore is nothing but a Hack. For his VERY FIRST “Original” Project, it now turns out he may have plagiarized it. For those RDM Fanboi types out there who don’t know what that means, suffice it to say that finally Ron Moore got caught putting his name on someone else’s work, as he has ALWAYS done. Seeing Virtuality score a virtual ZERO in the ratings is justice, pure and simple. Without Bonnie Hammer at SlyLie to run interference for his obvious lack of talent, the one trick pony known as Ron Moore is seen for the no talent bum he really is. He needs to go back to school and actually learn how to write before he gets to call himself a writer.

  8. For the person who said he ‘hated” the homosexual themes here. Hated? really? Hated? Is this what Christianity is about? Hatred? Real hatred? Wow, such anger, scarier than a low-rated TV sci-fi show.

  9. The guy never said anything about being christian. Personally, if two people want to be together in private, so be it. But I agree that I would rather not see it on TV. For all the talk, it really is not “normal”, it just is. Saying that it will be the norm in the future does not make it so.

  10. This is really helpful site, where i can found good stuff like content. Good work author/s!
