The NCAA has created a postgraduate scholarship in the name of the late sportscaster Jim McKay.
The Jim McKay Scholarship program will select one male and one female student athlete annually to receive a $10,000 postgraduate scholarship. The scholarship recognizes outstanding academic achievement of students exhibiting talent to potentially contribute to the sports communications industry.
“Jim McKay embodied the very best of sports and the very best of journalism, and we are honored to remember and promote the highest ideals of professionalism and integrity that he represented through the development of our new scholarship program,” said NCAA President Myles Brand in a statement.
Mr. McKay died in June at the age of 86. He was best known for hosting ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” and the network’s coverage of the Olympic Games.
