NBC Rules Sunday Ratings as Football Surges

NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” telecast featuring the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants scored a 14.2 household rating in the overnight Nielsens, according to The Hollywood Reporter, as the network easily won the night’s overall ratings battle. It was the best number for an October prime-time NFL game in 10 years, the story reported.

Here are the hour-by-hour results:

Fox benefited from the NFL broadcast overrun at 7 p.m., collecting a 7.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and a 4.3 for "The O.T.," ahead of NBC’s pre-game, which had a 2.5 in the 18-49 demo, according to TVbytheNumbers.com. CBS’s "60 Minutes" had a 2.1 rating and the season premiere of ABC’s "America’s Funniest Home Videos" had a 1.8 in the 18-49 demographic for the hour.

At 8 p.m. NBC’s game earned a 6.3 rating in the 18-49 demo for the hour, over Fox’s "The Simpsons" and "The Cleveland Show," which had ratings of 4.1 and 3.1, respectively, in the 18-49 demo. CBS’s "Amazing Race" measured a 3.3 in the 18-49 for the hour, and ABC’s "Extreme Makeover" managed a 2.5 rating in the same demo.

In the 9 p.m. hour, the NFL game grew to a 7.2 rating in the 18-49 demo, while ABC’s "Desperate Housewives" was strong with a 4.3 in the 18-49–better than CBS’s "Undercover Boss" with a 4.0 in the same demographic. Fox’s "Family Guy" and "American Dad" logged a 3.9 rating and a 2.9, respectively, in the 18-49 demographic.

At 10 p.m., NBC’s football coverage won the slot with a 6.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic for the hour, while the season premiere of CBS’s "CSI: Miami" registered a 3.2 in the 18-49 demo, ahead of ABC’s "Brothers & Sisters," which earned a 3.0 ratings in the same demographic for the hour.

In the overall tally for the night, Fox was second behind NBC, followed by CBS in third with ABC fourth.

  1. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
