Man in Rural Wisconsin Shoots TV Set After Watching Bristol Palin Dancing on TV Monday Night

A 66-year old man in Vermont, Wisconsin, shot his TV set Monday night after watching Bristol Palin dance on ABC’s "Dancing With the Stars," reports the Wisconsin State Journal.

According to the article, the man, Steven N. Cowan, "and his wife were watching ‘Dancing With the Stars’ when Cowan jumped up and swore as Bristol Palin appeared, saying something about ‘the (expletive) politics.’ Cowan was upset that a political figure’s daughter was on the show when he didn’t think she was a good dancer…"

Next, according to the article, Cowan went upstairs in his house and came back downstairs "carrying a single-shot shotgun, which he loaded and fired into the television."

Cowan was upset that he had not been able to find his pistols, "which had been taken by his daughter about a month ago for safety reasons," the story says.

He reloaded his shotgun and "pointed it toward his wife. She left the house and drove to [the town of] Black Earth, where she called 911. She told police she was afraid for her safety," the story says, quoting a complaint his wife made to the police.

When the police arrived at Cowan’s house he kept them at bay for 15 hours before surrendering peacefully. He was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment.

On the show itself [spoiler alert if you haven’t followed "DWTS" this week], many viewers were stunned that singer Brandy  was eliminated this week, even though one of her dances garnered a perfect score from the judges, while Palin continues on the show.

The Los Angeles Times’ Ministry of Gossip blog explains the math:

"On Monday, Brandy and Maks earned a total of 57 points for their two dances, with 53 for Bristol and Mark, 58 for Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer, and a perfect 60 for Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough. That’s a total of 228 points handed out by the judges, leaving the couples ranked as follows, before viewer voting was done: Jennifer/Derek, 26.3%; Kyle/Lacey, 25.4%; Brandy/Maks, 25%; and Bristol/Mark, 23.2%.

"So while in raw numbers Brandy and Maks were a full four points higher than Bristol and Mark in the judging, and separated by 3.6 points — 51.8% to 48.2% — when compared head to head, there was a difference of only 1.8 points between the two couple in the context of the entire field. And that was only half the battle.

"If the audience votes had broken evenly, with each couple getting 25% of the vote, that order would have held, with each team having 25 points added to their total. But Bristol and Mark really didn’t have that much to make up — obviously getting at least 1.9% more of the popular vote than the eliminated twosome."

  1. I liked Brandy but Max has turned himself into a pompous, self-important jerk that I cannot stand to watch or hear speak. I think many people voted for others just because of him. If Brandy had been dancing with any other pro dancer she would have been in the finals. Sorry Bristol, the vote wasn’t pro Bristol, it was anti-Max.

    What a nut job!

  3. Bristol is a nice enough young lady, but she is stiff as a board!!!!! I think the network should change the way voting is tabulated so special interest groups cannot sabotage a quality program.
