Apple Pulls WikiLeaks App From iPhone Store

Dec 21, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Apple has pulled an iPhone app from its App Store that enabled users to read secret U.S. diplomatic cables published by the controversial organization WikiLeaks and to follow the group’s Twitter feed, Computerworld reported.

The move was the latest in a series of similar steps by American companies, such as Amazon, B of A, MasterCard and PayPal, which have ceased WikiLeaks-related services, the story reports.

The report adds: “In late November, the organization began publishing U.S. State Department messages. Since then, WikiLeaks shifted its site to new hosting providers several times; its founder, Julian Assange, was arrested in the U.K. and then posted bail; and pro-WikiLeaks activists launched distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against the firms that withdrew services.”

According to the report, Igor Barinov, general manager of Moscow-based Hint Solutions, which has been selling the WikiLeaks app, said Apple notified him of the action and referred him to a number of passages in the App Store developer guidelines, including one that says in part: "Any app that is defamatory, offensive, mean-spirited, or likely to place the targeted individual or group in harms [sic] way will be rejected."
