Is Online Voting Coming to ‘American Idol?’

Rumors started flying on the Internet last week that there will be online voting on "American Idol" this season.

For example, TVSquad reports that "According to Reality Blurred, some intrepid ‘AI’ sleuths have deduced how the field will be narrowed down to the finalists now that the semi-final rounds are out: online voting."

The article continues. "Just to be clear: This is not official news from Fox, but it is a likely (and probable) explanation for several clues floating around the internet right now. ‘Idol’-tracking website AI Now noted that the Twitter bio for an account titled ‘AI10 Contestants’ reads ‘Voting begins Thursday, February 24 at ATT.com/Idol.’ Plus, an insider told Vote for the Worst that 40 to 50 contestants will be prominently featured during the five Hollywood episodes, with viewers voting online for the top 12 contestants. Three more finalists will be chosen via a judges’ wild card."

While TV Squad says that online voting might be a good thing, it also cautions, "Online voting is open for scandal. There are plenty of hackers who could do some damage, voting the worst candidates through (hm, a familiar concept) or rigging the process in favor of specific singers. Just look at the whole Bristol Palin/Tea Party conspiracy theory from this season of ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ Did the Tea Party actually vote Palin to the finals? Another downside: It’s way easier for lusty viewers to click a couple thousand times for the attractive yet mediocre performers. Tim Urban, anyone?"
