One of the actors in one of the best sitcoms on TV in the mid 1970s through the early 1980s has died, Deadline.com reports.

Steve Landesberg, who only turned 65 last month, has died of cancer, Deadline reports.

A stand-up comic, Landesberg became well-known playing the droll Det. Arthur Dietrich on the long-running "Barney Miller" (1975-1982).

He was nominated three times for the Emmy for best supporting actor in a comedy series for the role, but never won.

Says the article, "Landesberg passed away in New York. He is survived by his wife Nancy and his daughter."
