With KCET in L.A. No Longer Part of PBS, a Major PBS Program Will No Longer Be Available on Public TV for Most in L.A.; But the Show Can Be Seen on Cable

With KCET no longer a PBS outlet in Los Angeles, one of the signature PBS shows will not be available to be seen by most Angelenos by tuning into public TV. But the show will still be able to be seen on cable.

Here’s what’s going on. Taking over from KCET as the area’s primary PBS outlet will be KOCE, which is based in Orange County and is carried by most TV distributors in the area. KOCE will be rebranding itself PBS SoCal, reports the Los Angeles Times Showtracker blog.

However, the article says, KOCE was not able to pick up the rights to broadcast PBS staple "Charlie Rose" because an earlier programming commitment has the show airing on KVCR-TV, a secondary PBS station based in San Bernardino, Calif., the article notes. " ‘It’s probably my favorite show, so it’s personally painful,’  [said president and chief executive Mel] Rogers, noting that the station hopes to snag the show ‘in a matter of months.’ "

The problem is that some distributors, such as Time Warner Cable in most of Southern California, do not carry KVRC.

However, TVWeek notes that Time Warner Cable and most other distributors in the area DO carry Bloomberg TV, where "Charlie Rose" also appears.
