ESPN’s New Year’s Game Set a Cable Record

Jan 3, 2011  •  Post A Comment

ESPN set a record overnight rating for cable for a football game it broadcast on New Year’s Day, reports the Hollywood Reporter’s The Live Feed blog.

Saturday’s Rose Bowl game in Pasadena, Calif., between Wisconsin and TCU drew a preliminary rating of 11.7, the highest figure for cable, excluding NFL games, since 2001, the article says.

Interestingly, it was a drop from last year’s game, but that game was on broadcast, not cable. Last year’s contest drew a 13.8 overnight rating for ABC, the story says.

ESPN said its Saturday evening coverage of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl won the night among all broadcast and cable programs with a 6.7 overnight rating, although that also was down from last year when that broadcast was also on broadcast instead of cable.  Last year’s Fiesta Bowl aired on Fox and averaged an 8.6, the story says.
