Leno Hits Numbers Comparable to Conan’s Among Younger Viewers

For the first time since returning to NBC’s "The Tonight Show," Jay Leno is pulling in as many younger viewers as Conan O’Brien had before O’Brien was bumped off the show, the New York Post reports.

According to Nielsen, Leno’s "Tonight Show" averaged a 1.0 rating with adults 18 to 49 years old during the fourth quarter, pulling even with the demographic earned by O’Brien’s "Tonight Show," the story notes. Leno averaged almost 4 million viewers per night during the period, more than the 2.5 million averaged by O’Brien during the year-earlier period.

The next test for Leno will be whether he can pull in more viewers than O’Brien drew a year ago in January, when he was at the end of his "Tonight Show" run and was watched by about 5 million viewers a night in his final week, the article adds.

  1. the story is not that Leno ties Conan’s level of young viewers, but that he does so without alienating the older viewers
Conan is too goofy for mainstream audiences, even after accounting for youthful viewers
