Miss America Pageant Wins Big Ratings Jump as It Returns to Broadcast

Returning to broadcast television after leaving ABC in 2005, the Miss America pageant won by scoring a huge ratings jump on Saturday, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker blog.

The two-hour program drew an average of 6.6 million viewers, representing a 47% increase from last year, when it was aired on cable network TLC, the article notes.

Nevertheless, the pageant drew a fraction of the audience it attracted when it peaked decades earlier, the story adds. For instance, in 1988, the pageant was watched by 33 million viewers.

But on Saturday night, Miss America, which crowned 17-year old Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan, won its time slot on a night filed with repeats, the story says.

  1. Who even knew it was on? Some better promotion and they might have gotten another million or so viewers.
