New Law Targets Phony Celebrity Twitter and Facebook Accounts

Jan 7, 2011  •  Post A Comment

A new law in California may spell trouble for fake celebrity Twitter and Facebook accounts, reports EW.com’s PopWatch blog.

The law prohibits impersonating another individual online for the reason of "harming, intimidating, threatening or defrauding a person," the story notes.

Nevertheless, the story points out that since most fake celebrity accounts are done for humorous reasons, there’s First Amendment protection for such activities, citing Los Angeles entertainment attorney Alonzo Wickers.
