Comcast CEO Brian Roberts demonstrated the future of broadband using cable TV today at the NCTA Cable Show.

Knowing that the mantra of many consumers with regard to broadband is "Speed, Speed and More Speed," Roberts downloaded 23 episodes of "30 Rock" from Comcast’s Xfinity service in one minute, 39 seconds. That averages out to about 1 billion bits–a gigabit–a second.

In doing the live demo, Roberts said he was utlilizing 11 miles of Comcast cable plant in Chicago.

Lest you get too excited, it’ll be awhile before such speeds are part of everyday offerings of cable operators, and at what price point. Roberts, for example, did not say when these speeds would be available to Comcast subscribers.

Later, on a panel with Roberts, Sanjay Jha, the chairman and CEO of Motorola Mobility, said that in his crystal ball the home will be the hub from which most people will focus most of their content needs, and then people will have that content displayed on various devices.

On the panel Roberts said that the cloud will likely be a game changer in the way broadband has been a game changer. He noted that without broadband there’d be no Google, and he predicted that widespread adoption of the cloud will lead to some game-changing service that we don’t even know about today.
