Oscar-winning actor Christian Bale got in a beef with police during a visit to a small Chinese village where he hoped to meet with an activist who has been under house arrest, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Bale talked about the incident in an interview with CNN (see video below). The encounter took place as Bale, accompanied by CNN correspondent Stan Grant and a cameraman, attempted to see Chen Guangcheng, who has been living under house arrest since his release from prison in 2010.
THR reports: “Local police, many dressed in plainclothes, pushed the group back as they approached Chen’s village, punched and damaged a camera Bale was holding, and threw rocks at their car.”
Bale, who won an Oscar earlier this year for “The Fighter,” is in China promoting his latest movie, director Zhang Yimou’s “The Flowers of War.” He is known for his roles in a string of successful films including “The Dark Knight” and “Batman Begins.”
